At the time, the Dodge had the best combination of features, particularly the one-piece rear door with a rear window defroster that was not available on the Ford. (General Motors did not make an extended 15-passenger van at the time.). The Dodge was by far the best looking of the full-size vans.
I have never seen another like it, and it always generated great interest everywhere we went. Our girls are grown now, and my favorite vehicle of all time just sits in the storage building. I hate to sell it, but we no longer use it, so it is time to pass it on to someone who will appreciate such a unique vehicle.
The day it arrived at my local Dodge dealer, I put on a set of LT235/85R16E tires mounted on Sendel aluminum 7-inch x 16-inch aluminum wheels (I prefer tall and narrow tires for snow), which throw the speedometer off about 10 miles per hour at a 60 miles per hour, meaning an indicated 60 is actually about 70. Perhaps the speedometer gear could be changed to correct that, but I never did. (The speedometer driven gear is a Ford part.)
The dual air conditioning no longer works, but was working when we quit using the van years ago. I am sure it can be converted to R134a refrigerant and resealed to work.
The front axle is a Dana 44HD with automatic hubs. The rear axle is a Dana 60 with a limited-slip differential. The transfer case is a Borg-Warner 1345-033, the same as used in a Ford F-350 of the same vintage.
The van has the factory trailer tow package, and a factory trailer hitch.
The shocks are worn out, but are big Rough Country shocks and supposedly have a “lifetime’ guarantee. (I don’t know if that applies to a second owner.) The original shocks that were removed when new will be included if I can find them.
The headliner has come unglued from the ceiling backer panels so it sags, but is not torn so can be re-glued to the backer panels to look like new. Removing the headliner backer panels is not difficult and the re-gluing job could probably be done in an afternoon, using spray-on 3M trim adhesive. (I took out the entire interior trim when the vehicle was new to add superior insulation over the loose, thin fiberglass bats that the factory installed for insulation.) The interior needs cleaning, but it is not worn out or badly soiled. The floor has always had rubber factory floor mats over the carpet in the passenger area, so the carpet is not worn at all. No one ever smoked in the vehicle.
The fourth (rearmost) seat has only been used a few times, and I used a factory spare tire mount to mount the spare on the right rear side wall like on a 12-passenger version, instead of on the floor under the fourth seat when in 15-passenger configuration. The fourth seat will be included of course.
The front license plate holder is actually a fold-down step for use in cleaning the windshield. Since the vehicle stands over seven feet tall, it is needed.
The vehicle received the Ziebart rust treatment when new, but still has some minor rust ahead of the rear wheels. The side doors have rust at the bottom, but a set of rust-free side doors will be included that will need to be painted to match and the automatic door lock mechanisms, etc. installed from the original doors.
Complete Quigley documentation will be included with the vehicle, so that the new owner will know what components are used in the conversion.
This is a special, one-of-a-kind vehicle for someone who wants to carry a lot of cargo and people in rough terrain, or in bad weather. Is that you?

The 2018 Dodge Demon sounds like nothing else on the road
Thu, Mar 16 2017The Dodge Demon seems to have a torque problem, if making too much to easily contain can be considered a problem. In order to keep all that twist under control, the Demon has a new torque reserve launch system that works all sorts of engineering black magic to build boost without overloading the rear tires and brakes. That system, combined with the sticky Nittos and the fancy new suspension, should lead to some pretty spectacular 60-foot and 1/4-mile times. The way the system works is relatively straightforward. A bypass valve on the supercharger closes, "prefilling" the blower. In order to balance revs and torque, the computer can adjust fuel flow and spark on individual cylinders. The torque reserve kicks in when Launch Mode is initiated and the engine is turning at least 1,000 rpm. The goal is to reach peak boost quicker while efficiently putting down power. The side effect is a distinct exhaust note, which Dodge admits may make it seem like the Demon is broken. That seems to be the root of the "If you know, you know" tagline that the automaker has been using since the first teaser. Those interested can even download a ringtone, which might make it seem like you have a blown-out speaker on your phone. You can get a brief taste in the latest teaser video. In addition to the new info on the Launch Mode, Dodge released a couple of new teaser images. We briefly glimpsed one of these last week. It's a shot of the Demon's performance pages. The number 757 has appeared before, and all the talk of torque leads us to conclude that this is the Demon's torque output. The number 815 was seen in a separate teaser (shown below), which we feel may be the horsepower rating. If those numbers are correct, that would mean an increase of 108 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque, totally reasonable numbers given all the Demon's modifications. The license plate photo is another equation or code. This one, 3.9+221=405, is just as cryptic as the others. FCA adds 88k Dodge Challengers to Takata inflator recall
Mon, Jul 13 2015The Takata airbag inflator recall from FCA US is growing 88,346 vehicles larger in the US after the company's discovery of the faulty parts in the 2008-2010 Dodge Challenger. The affected examples have production dates between September 19, 2007, and October 29, 2010, and the coupes need the replacement components on the driver's side. According to chronology posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (as a PDF), the automaker was auditing the models covered under the campaign in July and "identified a population of vehicles that was inadvertently excluded." Initially, FCA believed these cars were using an unrecalled Takata inflator. The audit revealed that the affected cars indeed used a recalled version. As with the rest of the faulty parts, exposure to moisture can cause them to ignite too quickly during an airbag deployment and spray shrapnel at occupants. The problem has been linked to at least eight deaths worldwide and a vehicle fire in Japan. The Challenger wasn't previously part of FCA's 3.3-million unit national campaign or the subsequent expansion. According to FCA US the parts to complete the repairs in these Challengers aren't currently available. However, owners will be notified of the issue by mail starting August 14. They will receive a second notice when the parts become available. REMEDY: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. Parts to remedy the vehicles are not currently available. Interim notices will be mailed to owners beginning August 14, 2015.
Fiat brand chief reassigned then resigns amid flagging sales
Tue, Oct 13 2015Jason Stoicevich was replaced as head of the Fiat brand in North America just the other day. He was immediately reassigned to another job within Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. But according to Automotive News, Stoicevich quit the new job – and the company altogether – the very next day. The development comes amidst flagging sales for the Fiat brand in America. The introduction of the awkward-looking 500L multi-purpose vehicle has been largely regarded as a sales disaster in the US. Despite having just introduced the new 500X into the growing crossover market, and an overall upward trend across FCA group sales, the Fiat brand's figures have been dropping all year. While the Italian brand's volume has fluctuated from month to month compared to last year's sales, the number of cars its dealers sells on an average day has been firmly in decline. Fiat's downward trend reflects a general tendency in the market towards larger vehicles at the expense of smaller ones. However, the powers that be in Auburn Hills evidently felt that a change of leadership was in order, so it placed Dodge chief Tim Kuniskis in charge of all the company's mass-market passenger-car brands – namely Dodge, Chrysler, and Fiat – and moved Stoicevich to running the group's fleet and small-business operations. Stoicevich remained in charge of the company's California Business Center, but it seems as though he was as dissatisfied with the switch as his superiors were with the performance of the brand over which he presided, and so he apparently elected to step down and leave the company.
