Chrysler extends fuel tank warranties on LX cars, NHTSA ends probe

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has ended its investigation of 153,817, 5.7-liter and 6.1-liter Hemi V8-powered 2006 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum models after reports of stalling. Chrysler has responded by granting a lifetime warranty on the fuel tanks for these vehicles.
NHTSA received 299 reports of engines stalling while the models were stopped or driving at low speeds, and began an investigation. The government agency found that the control valve shutoff float in the V8s' 19-gallon fuel tank could malfunction if the fuel had too high of an ethanol content. In many cases, the valve would break in the open position, allowing the tank to be overfilled, which would then cause the cars to stall. However, there were no accidents reported, and the vehicles could be restarted immediately.
There will not be a recall on these vehicles because, "the condition represents a low risk to motor vehicle safety and is adequately addressed by Chrysler's extended warranty," NHTSA said to The Detroit News.

Roadkill Nights writhes with 200 Dodge Vipers

Some 200 Dodge Vipers from across the United States and Canada descended Saturday on Roadkill Nights, the FCA-sponsored event at M1 Concourse in Pontiac, Michigan, that turned Woodward Avenue into a drag strip. The Vipers were there to mark this month's end of production of the wicked, hand-built, highly customizable performance car after 25 years. Vipers of every generation, color and stripe arrived en masse under a police escort, from the blue-and-white GTS-R to cars dressed in appropriate Snakeskin Green. Check out the gallery above. Halfway around the world, meanwhile, other Viper fans are trying to mark the car's production demise by claiming the record lap time at the Nurburgring. They ran a 7:03.45 lap in late July. And according to a Facebook post yesterday from the group, they've secured funding for more Ring time to make another attempt. Roadkill Nights racing was continuing until 11 Saturday night, and included drag events featuring the new Dodge Demon. MotorWeek revisits the awesome, original Dodge Viper

MotorWeek is bringing the automotive world a wonderful blast from the past with its latest Retro Review. Not only does the video feature the now-famous, original Dodge Viper, but this is also a chance to watch one lapping Pocono International Raceway in a test of track prowess. This segment was MotorWeek's first chance to unleash the Viper around a racecourse, and the show took advantage of the opportunity. In addition to the usual 0-60 mph and quarter-mile tests, the 400-horsepower V10 is let loose to do lap after lap. The clip offers a great dose of nostalgia and is worth a watch to remember the intense enthusiasm surrounding the Viper at the time.
