1956 DODGE CORONET D-500-1....The D-500-1 package is one of the rarest options available in 1956, designated by the block number (D-500-1###). This feature is what led to what was known as the “Street D-55-1s”

Fastest 1956 production vehicle in the world, the D-500-1 set 306 records in 14 days of endurance testing at Bonneville Utah, returning 27 world records that were previously held by the likes of Porsche and Jaguar and 24 speed records demonstrating breakaway speed and torque from 1/4 mile to 10 miles were set.

The D-500 was a separate model, with special features...Special High Performance 315 Hemi...engine, (265 or 276 hp), Special engine #s starting with (D-500-1001...285hp) came with dual-quad carburetion and heavy duty chassis suspension setting 1 1/2 inches lower. New designed steering arms, larger exhaust systems, and higher braking area., and the distinctive cross checkered victory flags with the 500 insert.

There were at most, 8255 D-500s produced, and due to the fact that so many went to NASCAR, USAC and IMCA circuits and police use, the attrition rate was very high on these cars. In May of 1996, W. P. Chrysler estimated, at most, there was only 250 surviving.

The racing only version, D-500-1, came from the factory with the dual quad set=up installed, and were shipped to the top racers across the country, and were winning. These were the first Super Stock Dodge, and led to the First Super Stock Class Championship under the new ATAA sanction.

There was less than 100 of these produced, and they had the distinction of being the first production vehicle to break 100 mph in the 1/4 mile, and the first under 14 second E. T. in the 1/4 mile.

The dual-quad set-up was the last option made available to the public and were not installed at the factory but were shipped in the D-500-1 trunk. If this set-up was installed on a automatic transmission car the warranty was voided. This feature led to what was known as the “Street D-500-1s

Viper fans are at the Nurburgring to reclaim production-car speed record

With the outgoing generation of the Viper, Dodge missed a fabulous opportunity to set another Nurburgring lap record. The company did it, twice, with the previous-generation Viper ACR, but never went back with the latest ACR, and it definitely won't now that the car is being discontinued. This is why a group of Viper fans began fundraising back in January to take ACRs to the 'Ring for one more shot at glory. And, right now, that group is in Germany preparing for the attempt. The team made it thanks to support from GoFundMe donors, and sponsorship from Kumho Tires and Prefix, a design and prototype company based in Michigan. They're using two Viper ACR GTS-R commemorative-edition cars, which are appropriate for competing track cars since they have the same white-with-blue-stripes color scheme as Dodge's old Viper GTS-R racecars. The cars are supplied from ViperExchange and BJ Motors and equipped with Kumho Ecsta V720 tires. According to the group's Facebook page, the team has been practicing since Wednesday, July 19. A video posted today highlighted that the only mechanical issue so far has been an overheating problem that was solved with a new thermostat. Each car is running a different suspension setup for practice - one soft, the other hard - and they'll adjust them as needed. The plan is that both cars will use the same setup on the record attempt. To claim the record without any argument will require beating the 6:45.9 time set by the Nio EP9 electric car. Right behind it is the Radical SR8LM, which is technically street-legal, but not really a street car. It set a time of 6:48. As for true street cars with gasoline engines, the target the Viper team will really want to beat is the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, which pulled off a time of 6:52. Dodge Hellcat orders on hold due to 'unprecedented demand'

Want to get your hands on a 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger or Charger Hellcat to call your very own? We don't blame you, and you're not alone. According to Motor Authority and confirmed by a spokesperson from Chrysler, Dodge has gotten so many orders for its stable of Hellcats that it simply cannot keep up with demand: "Due to unprecedented demand for the 2015 Dodge Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcats, we are temporarily restricting orders while we validate current orders that are in the system." Put another way, if you're waiting for a Hellcat, your wait is likely to be a lot longer than you'd like. We've reached out to Chrysler to find out how long it might take for a new customer to get a new Hellcat, and we'll update if and when we hear back. Say goodbye to the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200

Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne outlined an update to the company's five-year business plan Wednesday, and among the changes, the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 sedans will soon be phased out. The company's presentation to investors states that the "market shift from cars to trucks and UVs [utility vehicles is] now seen as permanent shift in demand," and FCA wants to respond as quickly as possible. Killing the 200 and Dart will allow FCA to build more Jeep and Ram models at the Sterling Heights, MI, and Belvidere, IL, plants where the sedans were produced. We already knew FCA was planning to shift 200 and Dart production to Mexico, to free up the Sterling Heights facility for Ram 1500 production, and the Belivdere site for Jeep Cherokee output. The Cherokee will move from its current home in Toledo, OH, to allow for increased Wrangler production. It's no shock that FCA wants to shift its focus to crossovers and trucks. In December 2015, for example, combined sales of the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 were 15,310. The Jeep Cherokee, which uses the same platform as the Dart and 200, outsold both models combined, with 24,049 sales. Both the Dart and 200 had troubles from the beginning. Marchionne recently blamed designers for the 200 not receiving a Consumer Reports 'recommended' rating, and the Dart was one of the lowest-scoring cars in a CR reliability study.
