61 1961 Chrysler Newport on 2040-cars
Denver, Colorado, United States
1961 Chrysler Newport 2door hardtop This is a long time COLORADO car, so its not all rusted out like a back-east car. The trunk was rusted out but I have patched in a rock solid trunk floor from a donor car (not thin and floppy like the patch panels) The floors are good in the back seat and passenger areas. The drivers area floor is rusted through, but I have a new patch panel that comes with. There is some collision damage (just scrape, not deep) on the right side, with some old bondo on it, there is still some dentage there. There is a rust though area near the left headlight that looks like a thin line about 3 inches long. The trim is good, some clips are loose, pot metal pieces are good compared to whats out there. The front seat is ok for a guy, but you wouldn’t sit your date on it. The back seat is out, springs good, needs recover. The astrodome dash lights up in blue luminescent, but the sppedo does not work. Maybe the cable? All glass is good, with only a small crack in the corner of the right rear side glass, and some minor wiper wear in the front. All windows regulate well. Brakes are all new with a Master kit from Kanter, master cylinder , hoses, 6 wheel cyliners and new shoes. The car has a new fuel tank, sending unit and pump. The car has original 361, which came with a 2bbl. I have converted to a 4bbl with period correct Mopar parts. She runs and drives, and with the nice patina, makes a beautiful head-turning rat rod, but its also a super solid platform for a restoration or custom. Smokes a little on startup, but smooths out after a while. The tranny looses fluid when sitting. After the level is back up, she shifts well and does not slip. The Wheels and tires are borrowed from another car. They are NOT included in this sale. They are new 15 x 7 Wheel Vintiques, with new 205/70 in front and 225/70 in back. You can buy them as an add-on for an extra $1000, or I will fit the car with “roller” tires, suitable for transport, but not for street use. Last year for Chrysler BIG FINS. This is your chance! Happy Independence Day! roysvintagecars Roy 303-988-0391 ps. I will not reveal the reserve price before auction close. |

All hail the Hellephant, Mopar's 1,000-horsepower crate engine
Wed, Oct 31 2018It's shocking to say this, but the all-powerful Dodge Demon looks weak now that Mopar has unleashed the Hellephant. This crate motor makes 1,000 horsepower and 950 pound-feet of torque, and its name is a combination of the nickname for the old 426-cubic-inch Hemi V8 and, obviously, the Hellcat. This monster is a 426-cubic-inch version of the current third-generation Hemi V8 topped by a supercharger similar to what the Hellcat line packs. Everything is cranked up to — or perhaps, past — 11. The engine block is made of aluminum and weighs 100 pounds less than the equivalent iron block. All of the internals are forged. The stroke and bore have been increased. The supercharger produces 15 pounds of boost and displaces 3 liters; more than the 2.7-liter blower on the Demon and the 2.4-liter blower on the Hellcat. And as big and powerful as it is, it will still rev to 7,000 rpm. It's a thoroughly monstrous motor, but shockingly, it won't be that difficult to live with. For one thing, Mopar will offer a complete kit to get the engine up and running, including an engine computer, wiring harness and drive-by-wire throttle. It also runs on 93-octane pump gas. That's especially amazing considering the Demon engine "only" makes 840 horsepower, and that's on race gas with 100+ octane fuel. It also has us wondering what the Hellephant could make on racing fuel. The Mopar folks did say that there's room to add more power. Pricing wasn't announced for the Hellephant engine. The Hellcat crate engine retails at $19,350 directly from Mopar, so it's safe to assume that the Hellephant will go for more. The installation kit with the computer and harness will be an extra charge of likely over $2,000, based on the Hellcat kit. The engine and the kit will be available in the first quarter of 2019. Fiat Chrysler and Renault are in advanced partnership talks
Sun, May 26 2019Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Renault are in advanced discussions about a possible alliance, according to a report from the Financial Times citing an anonymous "person familiar with the matter." The news isn't particularly surprising, as FCA has been a constant subject of merger and alliance talks for as long as many of us can remember. We've reported on a potential tie-up between these two automakers several times, as far back as 2008 and as recently as two months ago. FCA CEO Mike Manley has mentioned the company's openness to merging with another automaker. At the Geneva Motor Show a few months back, he said, "We have a strong independent future, but if there is a partnership, a relationship or a merger which strengthens that future, I will look at that." It's no secret that FCA is much stronger in the United States than it is in Europe. For its part, Renault has basically zero presence in the United States. A partnership or potential alliance between the two could shore up each automaker's weak spots and allow the group to split investment money into new technologies, including electric vehicles and autonomy. Of course, Renault is already tied up with Nissan and Mitsubishi, but that partnership has been a little tattered since the arrest of former Nissan and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn on charges of financial misconduct in Japan. And in addition to Renault, FCA is understood to have discussed various partnership strategies with the PSA Peugeot Citroen group. What a final agreement – if there's any agreement at all – could look like between the two global automakers remains to be seen, and the report from Financial Times cautions that many different options for FCA and Renault are currently on the table. In other words, stay tuned.
Junkyard Gem: 1987 Chrysler Conquest TSi
Wed, Dec 19 2018If you feel like stumping your friends with a very trivial car-trivia question, try this one: What car model was sold in the United States with badging from Plymouth, Dodge, and Chrysler? They'll tell you it's the Neon, which was badged as a Chrysler outside of the USA, and you'll point out the "in the United States" qualification and feel smug in your superior automotive knowledge. The correct answer is, of course, the Conquest, which was a rebadged Mitsubishi Starion. Here's a Chrysler Conquest TSi, found in a Denver-area self-service wrecking yard. The TSi was the factory-hot-rod version of the Conquest, with intercooling for its 2.6-liter Mitsubishi Astron four-cylinder engine and 176 horsepower— pretty serious for 1987. For 1984 through 1986, the Conquest could be had with either Dodge or Plymouth branding; the 1987-1989 Conquests are all Chryslers. This one is rough, though the odometer shows that it never even reached 150,000 miles. Here's a Grateful Dead sticker, presumably bought on Shakedown Street at some point before Jerry Garcia's death in 1995. TURBO was a powerful word during the 1980s, so much so that the Starion/Conquest came with seat belts emblazoned with the sacred word. I still see the occasional Starion or Conquest during my junkyard travels, but the Chrysler Conquest is the rarest version these days. This content is hosted by a third party.
