1961 Chrysler Newport 2 door hardtop

I have a clear California title in my name. The vehicle is currently registered and insured in my name. The car does drive and I have driven it very little in the last year, as I’ve been trying to make it more reliable for weekday and weekend drives. The vehicle you see is in the same condition as I had purchased it, I have done nothing with the paint, body, suspension. Only what I’ve described below.

Factory specs for this vehicle:

361 2 bbl.

Automatic push button transmission

Power steering

Power Brakes

Heater

Radio Delete

Remote side view mirror

Body:

All body panels are fairly straight, small dings and scratches here and there. Paint is weak, tiny spot chips here and there. Looks like single stage, quick spray job who ever painted it.

Missing: door and fender trim, both sides. Passenger side rear quarter window trim. (The trim between the two windows)

Appears to have been repaired in the driver’s side rear quarter panel near tail light/bumper (see pics)

Whoever painted this car got crazy with painting EVERYTHING red, the control arms, frame, heater box, valve covers, air cleaner. I wanted to tone it down a bit so I started detailing the engine compartment.

Rust:

Small bubble spots on lower rockers and lower rear quarter panel. More evident on passenger side.

Driver/passenger side front floors pans have some small fiberglass patches over existing floor.

Rust spot on driver side C pillar near rear window.

Lower trunk gasket area rusted out, only on bottom area, not top or sides.

Trunk floor has surface rust, but NOT rusted through, no holes.

Rear seat floors are solid

Frame front to back is solid, rust free.

Interior:

Seats front and rear need recovering.

Needs new headliner, needs carpets.

I removed the badly cracked dash pad and sagging headliner. Door panels are decent but those should be redone as well. Driver side door handle is removed due to a tension spring that broke and connects to knob.

Suspension: Torsion bars lowered up front but can be adjusted to raise it higher. Leaf spring rear, has air shocks and 2 1/2 ” lowering blocks.

Tires: 14” stock wheels with bias ply tires. Tires will need replacing at some point but are decent enough for light driving.

Engine: Previous owner had radiator flushed, cleaned, re-cored. Gas tank was boiled and sealed. Points, cap and wires replaced. Alternator looks relatively new.

What I’ve done:

Brakes: All new brakes cylinders front & back, brake hoses, spring kits, and shoes. Brake drums haven’t been ordered. Power brake booster is off the car for now. Still working on getting  the brakes bled and adjusted before sale.

Carb: New carb kit, fuel filter, added fuel pressure gauge

New spark plugs, New MSD blaster coil

New battery

Electrical:

Ordered and installed a professionally made (looks OEM) front and rear wiring harness. Every wire labeled, new bulbs, etc. The entire harness was a little over $1,100.00.

If you require any specific details about this car please contact me ASAP, BEFORE the auction ends. If I've missed any details in my description I'd be more than happy to answer your questions.

Shipping: The buyer must arrange ALL details and costs of shipping. My street is large enough for a car hauler to come down and pick it up. I am located about 10-15 miles south of the Port of Oakland so if this is going overseas please contact me with questions.

Preserving automotive history costs big bucks

Wed, 29 Jan 2014

$1.8 million is spent each year to maintain GM's fleet of 600 production and concept cars.
When at least two of the Detroit Three were on the verge of death a few years back, one of the tough questions that was asked of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler execs - outside of why execs were still taking private planes to meetings - was why each company maintained huge archives of old production and concept vehicles. GM, for example, had an 1,100-vehicle collection when talk of a federal bailout began.

Waymo self-driving taxis in Arizona are now carrying paying passengers

Wed, Dec 5 2018

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Alphabet's Waymo on Wednesday launched a significant development in its costly, decade-long quest for autonomous transportation: Its self-driving taxis are now actually generating fares. With little fanfare, the company has begun charging passengers to use its driverless vehicles in a roughly 100-mile (160 km) zone in four Phoenix suburbs — Chandler, Tempe, Mesa and Gilbert — where it has been testing its technology since 2016. Producing revenue is a strategic milestone, putting Waymo ahead of U.S. rivals, primarily General Motors' Cruise Automation and Uber Technologies, which have yet to launch their own paid self-driving services. All are racing to win customers and recoup billions spent developing the technology. To use Waymo's service, dubbed Waymo One, riders must download an app and provide a credit card number, similar to ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft. A human driver will be behind the wheel, but only to intervene in case of emergency. Major challenges remain, starting with technical hurdles. A Waymo One taxi tested by Reuters last week proved slow and jerky at times. Whether customers will continue using the service once the novelty wears off remains to be seen. Regulations governing the industry across the country are an incoherent patchwork, a significant hurdle to fast expansion. Waymo would not say exactly how many of its cars would be on the road in Arizona. It said its around-the-clock service initially would be limited to "hundreds" of people invited to sign up last year. For now, pricing is roughly in line with that of Uber and Lyft. A 15-minute, 3-mile (4.8 km) drive taken by Reuters last week cost $7.59, just above the $7.22 offered by Lyft. "Over time, we hope to make Waymo One available to even more members of the public," Chief Executive John Krafcik wrote in a blog on Wednesday. "Self-driving technology is new to many, so we're proceeding carefully." 10 million miles, $1 billion The company has been testing its driverless cars for a decade. Its fleet, now numbering 600 vehicles, has logged more than 10 million miles on public roads in and around 25 U.S. cities. Alphabet does not disclose its total investment, but industry experts put that sum at well over $1 billion. Monetizing driverless technology has been slow going.

Hyundai-Kia claims 'greenest' title from Honda, Big Three still big losers

Tue, May 27 2014

Let's start with the good news. On average, any new car you buy in the US today will be 43 percent cleaner than any average new car in 1998. Here's some more good news, for Korea anyway, Hyundai-Kia has been named the cleanest automaker in the latest study by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), which looked at 2013 model year vehicles sold between October 2012 and September 2013 from the top eight automakers (by volume). The bad news? The big three Detroit automakers are, on average, still making the dirtiest cars in the showroom. The big three Detroit automakers are, on average, still making the dirtiest cars in the showroom. The problem for Ford, General Motors and Chrysler lies in their trucks, which sell well but tend to have pretty bad fuel economy (compared to sedans, at least). The UCS calculates its list by averaging "the per-mile emissions for each light-duty vehicle sold by each automaker" and then factors in "the fuel economy, fuel type, and sales volume of each type of vehicle sold by each automaker" and "the upstream global warming emissions from producing and distributing the fuel used by each vehicle, as well as emissions from the vehicles themselves." That all means that, the more trucks you sell, the worse you're gonna do. Then again, the more trucks you sell with 18 mpg, the more you're helping drivers put CO2 into the air, so the UCS is doing a fair comparison of the things that this study is trying to track. More details on the methodology are available on page six of the study PDF. In case you were wondering (we were), UCS did make sure to use the revised mpg numbers for Hyundai and Kia models that were originally overstated. Hyundai has apologized for and fixed those figures and even with the new, corrected numbers, Hyundai's total emissions are dropping at a rate of about three percent a year, enough for it to take the greenest company title for the first time. In fact, this is the first time that an automaker other than Honda has come out on top in the UCS ranking, which has been released six times now, including the first one in 2000 (which looked at 1998 model year data). In 2010, Honda was almost knocked off the winner's perch by both Hyundai and Toyota, but managed to hold on. Chrysler, on the other hand, came in dead last (again) in the ranking of the top eight automakers, snagging the "dirtiest tailpipe" award once (again). Read the UCS' press release below.
