1968 Imperial Crown Coupe

This is a really nice survivor car.  1968 Imperial Crown Coupe.  Color is Forest Green metallic with the full dark green leather interior.  The car was originally sold at Town and Country Chrysler in Minnesota.  The original owner purchase the car and took delivery in December 1967.  While the car was used for a period of time in Minnesota during all of our seasons, it was not used excessively which is why this car is still in such good condition for an unrestored Imperial.  The family owned the car until 1987 when it was sold to a collector and at the time of the sale the car had approximately 39,000 miles on the odometer.  Second owner kept the Imperial for another 10 years using the car very little.  He sold the car with a little over 41,000 miles showing, and the rest of the miles have been my pleasure to add to this fine road car.  Currently the car shows 59,591 miles, so for a vehicle that is 47 years old it is a low mileage example.

I would rate this a solid #3 car.  It is not a concourse show car and it is my no means a perfect car.  It is an honest survivor with 47 years of patina.  I am not representing this as such.  I don’t think you will find a more solid and good driving 47 year old original unrestored Imperial.

 Standard and Optional Equipment:

440 cubic inch engine (rated at 375 hp with the dual exhaust/dual snorkel air cleaner)

4 barrel carburetor

Automatic transmission

Power steering

Power brakes

Power windows

Dual power bucket seats with auto forward on passenger seat

Auto – temp air conditioning

AM/FM signal seeking radio with reverberator

Front and rear seat speaker

Rear window defroster

Carpeted trunk

Full leather interior

Full carpeting

Front and rear seat center arm rests

Seat belts

Vanity mirror

Dual exhaust and dual snorkel air cleaner

Paint on the car is not perfect but it is still very nice for its age.  The right front fender has had some paint work done a long time ago.  Something on the fender cap has caused round spots.  I don’t know what this is from since it was this way when I bought the car.  Other than the right front fender cap and forward part of the front fender, the paint to me looks to be original.  There are chips along the side from various door dings.  Paint shines well and shows well from 10 feet.  Vinyl roof cap is in good condition.  It is not ripped or town.  Chrome roof trim is also in good condition.  All bumpers are solid as are the two rear bumperettes.  These are not rusted like happens with so many of these Imperials.  Chrome is the original the car came with when new.

Interior is in very nice condition.  Headliner is intact with now sags, rips, stains, tears, or mouse holes.  Visors are nice.  Package shelf is in good condition and has not been cut or damaged.  All side panels are in good condition.  All of the bronze pieces are with the car.  That is a rarity with the 1968 Imperial as pieces tend to get lost.  All of the pieces are here and in place!  All of the courtesy lights work too.

Leather seats are in excellent condition.  There are no rips or tears in the leather.  Dash pad is clean and in good condition.  No sagging, warping, or cracking.  Steering wheel is solid and no cracks!  Again, a rare find from a car built 47 years ago.

All of the gauges, the speedometer, the clock, power antenna, radio, and reverb work correctly.

Trunk is clean.  Carpet is in good condition as are all of the plastic or cardboard trunk panels.  Includes the correct jack, handle, base, and the spare tire with carpeted cover.

Here are the things I know to be issues:

1.      Right rear window motor is stuck.  I had this problem a couple of years ago and got the motor working.  It is stuck again from lack of use.  So the motor will need to be serviced.

2.      Tires are old and will need to be replaced.  There is lots of tread left, but because of the age (they are over 10 years old) I would not take this car on a long highway trip until the tires are replaced.

3.      Auto-temp system works but needs servicing.  System will start and operate but does not always adjust the airflow.  Air conditioning will blow cold so the system does hold a charge.

During the time I have owned this Imperial it has not required any major work or service.  I have replaced the front brake calipers, the master cylinder, and have had the pitman arm replaced.  Otherwise it has just been annual oil changes and minor maintenance to keep the Imperial in driving condition.  This car has been a very reliable highway road car and I have never had any major issues with the car.  This vehicle is a very smooth, very tight feeling Imperial.  The steering is tight, there is no shaking, no vibration, and the car tracks true and straight down the highway.  It really is a pleasure to drive the car.

I am selling this car as is with no warrantee.  You’re purchasing a 47 year old un-restored car.  I require a nonrefundable deposit within 48 hours of the close of the auction.  Final payment to be made by cash, wire transfer, or cashier’s check prior pick-up or delivery of the car.  Car will not be release until any cashier’s check has been cleared.  The car has a clean/clear Minnesota title.  You are responsible for any transportation costs to ship the car.  You are responsible for any cost associated with an inspection.  I will not share those costs with you!  If you win the auction I will help with coordinating pick up by your transport company.  Car is available for inspection in Minneapolis, MN.  I reserve the right to end the listing if the item is no longer available.

FCA and UAW deal could mean huge production shakeups

Thu, Sep 17 2015

The big labor contract between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the United Auto Workers is likely to lead to some very serious production shakeups across the company's North American manufacturing operations. That's according to a new report from Automotive News, which details the sweeping changes at no fewer than five production facilities in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Mexico, and Poland. So without further ado, here's what's going where, presented in easy to digest bullet form. Ram 1500 production would move from Warren, MI to Sterling Heights, MI Warren, MI would be retooled for unibody production and would handle the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and could potentially build Grand Cherokees to ease the strain on Detroit's Jefferson North factory Chrysler 200 production would move from Sterling Heights, MI to Toluca, Mexico Dodge Dart production would move from Belvidere, IL to Toluca, Mexic Fiat 500 production, which is currently handled by Toluca, would be concentrated in Poland, where the Euro-spec Cinquecento is built Jeep Cherokee production would move from Toledo, OH to Belvidere, IL to make room for Wrangler and Wrangler Pickup production Like we said, those are some big changes. But, as FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne said in an earlier interview with Automotive News, this kind of shakeup would make a lot of sense. In that August interview the exec said that automakers moved truck production to Mexico because they were "threatened" by the UAW. "The only thing [the UAW] want is to move the truck back. Which is right. If you move the truck back here, which is [the UAW's] domain, [and move] all the cars that we get killed on somewhere else, we could actually make sense of this bloody industry and actually increase the number of people employed in this country and really share wealth because we are making money," Marchionne told AN. Junkyard Gem: 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible Conversion

Sat, Mar 5 2022

Chrysler started selling PT Cruisers for the 2001 model year, and these "trucks" (yes, they were considered trucks for American regulatory purposes) proved quite popular for at least the first half of the 2000s. A factory-built version with a convertible top appeared for 2005 (and later "won" the Top Gear Worst Car of the Last 20 Years award), but what about the PT Cruiser shoppers who wanted a drop-top before then? It turns out the aftermarket had the solution: the Newport Convertible Engineering conversion, which took new PT Cruisers and added a fully functioning convertible top. According to a discussion on Allpar, 54 of these conversions were performed, and I found one of them in a Denver-area self-service yard last month. Newport Convertible Engineering is still around, though they're in Huntington Beach instead of Placentia these days. If you want a Tesla Model S or Range Rover convertible, they'll build it for you. The NCE conversion for the PT Cruiser cost $9,900 (about $15,715 in 2022 dollars) plus the $17,000 sticker price of a new PT Cruiser, and included the needed chassis-stiffening modifications and a shortened, hydraulically-actuated rear hatch. The materials used look pretty good, even after 20 years of abuse and neglect. This one had the convertible mechanism ziptied shut in many locations when I found it. Naturally, I cut all those zipties to see if the roof mechanism still worked. It was very, very stiff but proved semi-functional (the zipties appeared to be an attempt to keep a faulty latch mechanism from letting the roof pop open at speed). The roof assembly weighs a lot, though you could spend an extra $3,000 to get a power-actuation system from NCE. This cab must have been extremely noisy and buffety with the top down at speed, but so what? Convertibles are cool. Mechanically, it's an ordinary Touring Edition with a Neon's 2.4-liter four-cylinder making 150 horsepower. You could get a PT Cruiser with a five-speed manual transmission, and many did, but this one has the extra-cost automatic. Starting in the 2003 model year, a 215-horse turbocharged engine became available. Rare, but not valuable. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Fiat Chrysler to test automatically switching hybrid cars to electric mode in Turin

Wed, Jun 3 2020

MILAN — Fiat Chrysler is piloting a project in its historic Italian home of Turin to allow its hybrid plug-in cars to automatically switch to electric-only mode when entering congested city centers. The project, which aims to maximize the environmental benefits of hybrid cars, comes as Fiat Chrysler (FCA) rolls out its first alternative-engine models, trying to make up ground on rivals which already offer a range of full electric and hybrid vehicles in Europe. The project, named 'Turin Geofencing Lab' and involving the city authorities and public transport agency GTT, is based on a prototype system with fully integrated on-board sensors allowing a car to recognize when it is entering a restricted traffic zone, FCA said on Wednesday. The sensors will then automatically turn off the combustion engine and switch to electric mode. This would allow hybrid cars to enjoy dispensations for electric vehicles in the city center, including dedicated parking spaces. The system has been initially tested on the new Jeep Renegade 4xe hybrid plug-in model. The tests could be extended to the group's other hybrid models from next year. The COVID-19 crisis has not significantly delayed FCA's plans to launch its first full-electric and hybrid models. An electric version of the Fiat 500 small car and plug-in hybrid versions of Jeep's Renegade and Compass models are due to hit the market this summer. A similar project was launched last year by German carmaker BMW and Rotterdam, with a smart-phone reminder to switch-off combustion engines when passing a virtual boundary into the Dutch city's "electric-only zone." But that did not entail such a direct link between the vehicle and the city's access platform and gates to restricted traffic zones, as in Turin's case. Roberto Di Stefano, FCA's Head of EMEA e-Mobility, said that once the Turin project was completed, it would be gradually offered to other cities, in Italy and abroad.   Green Chrysler Fiat Jeep
