Fiat Chrysler, Peugeot owner PSA reportedly in merger talks
Tue, Oct 29 2019Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot owner PSA are in talks to combine in a deal that could create a $50 billion automaker, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing sources. The deal could be in the form of an all-stock deal, the report said. Fiat Chrysler shares rose sharply after the report and were up more than 7% in late afternoon trading. Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot had no comment. Investors have speculated for several years that Fiat Chrysler was hunting for a merger partner, encouraged by the rhetoric of the company's late chief executive, Sergio Marchionne. In 2015, Marchionne outlined the case for consolidation of the auto industry, and tried unsuccessfully to interest General Motors in a deal. Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler had discussed a combination earlier this year, before Fiat Chrysler proposed a $35 billion merger with French automaker Renault SA. Fiat Chrysler Chairman John Elkann broke off talks with Renault in June after French government officials intervened, and pushed for Renault to first resolve tensions with its Japanese alliance partner, Nissan. Following the collapse of the Renault merger plan, Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley left the door open for talks with would-be partners, but said the Italian-American automaker could go it alone despite mounting costs to develop electric vehicles and comply with tougher emissions rules in Europe, the United States and China. Peugeot CEO Carlos Tavares dismissed the idea of a combination with Fiat Chrysler during a discussion with reporters at the Frankfurt auto show last month. "We don't need it," Tavares said when asked whether he was still interested in a deal with Fiat Chrysler. Fiat Chrysler has a commercial vehicle partnership with Peugeot.
FCA employees likely to reject UAW contract
Wed, Sep 30 2015For a brief, blissful glimmer of time, it seemed like we might have a period of labor harmony here in the Motor City. The United Auto Workers and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the UAW's lead bargaining company, came to a pending agreement that seemed promising enough that union president Dennis Williams, shown above with FCA boss Sergio Marchionne, thought it'd be ratified by the membership. Well, he was wrong. It's widely expected that FCA's rank-and-file workforce will vote against the deal, which gave workers a raise, would establish a VEBA-style healthcare pool, and deliver a $3,000 bonus for signing the agreement, while retaining the much-hated two-tier wage system. According to The Detroit News, it'd be the first time in over three decades the union's general population didn't follow its leadership's recommendation. Two of FCA's big US facilities, Toledo Assembly and Sterling Heights Assembly, overwhelmingly voted no, with The News saying they "mathematically sealed the deal's fate." According to The News, UAW Local 1700 President Charles Bell said roughly 90 percent of SHAP's 3,000-plus union workforce voted "no" on the deal. Should the pending agreement fail as it's expected to, there are three potential avenues for the union. First, as The News details, both sides could return to the bargaining table. Second, FCA workers could hit the picket line. Finally, union leadership may opt to focus its firepower on General Motors or Ford. It's a good thing we aren't the gambling sort, because those all seem very much within the realm of possibility. Not surprisingly, rank-and-file UAW members have taken issue with the survival of the two-tier wage structure, while others simply think that union employees deserve a wage hike. There was also, we're betting, some serious concerns over the reshuffling of production that would come with a new FCA/UAW deal. As previously reported, no fewer than four UAW facilities would have their vehicle lines shuffled around, including both SHAP and Toledo. Expect more news as soon as the UAW formally announces the results of its FCA voting. 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid starts at $43,090, or just over $35,000 with a tax credit
Tue, Nov 15 2016Chrysler has announced pricing for its 2017 Pacifica Hybrid plug-in minivan, and with the federal tax credit, it's priced similarly to mid-range vans. The Hybrid Premium starts at $43,990, or $35,590 after the credit, and the Hybrid Platinum starts at $46,090, or $38,590 with the credit. In Chrysler's line-up, these are close in cost to the Touring L and Touring L Plus Pacifica models, as well as mid-level trims on competitors' minivans. The big difference being that the Pacifica Hybrid provides up to 30 miles of electric range on a full charge and an 80 MPGe rating in the city. The Pacifica Hybrid is equipped similarly to the mid-range Pacificas. The Premium trim comes standard with leather seats all around, seat heaters for the front, remote start with pre-conditioning, three-zone automatic climate control, active noise cancellation, 7.3 inch color display in the instrument panel, and the SafetyTec package. This package includes features such as rear park assist and blind-spot monitoring. The Platinum trim adds Nappa leather and front ventilated seats, a heated two-tone steering wheel, 13-speaker sound system, Uconnect Theater rear entertainment, and a programmable key for young drivers (or sketchy-looking valets). At a potential price of just over $35,000, the Pacifica Hybrid is an appealing package, since it's a plug-in hybrid with usable range and loads of space. However, this is the case as long as the tax credit holds out. Once the credit is no longer available, the Pacifica Hybrid will top the line for pricing. At that point, its value proposition will have to be weighed more heavily against its green cred and driving dynamics. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party.
