The following is a summary of the work we did on the 1966 Impala SS convertible. No doubt some improvements have not been listed. It was a long and costly process. I have many, but not all receipts. I do, however, have a listing of improvements I compiled for my auto insurance company dated 12/31/04 which serves as the core for the following list:
Car purchased in 1999. The following was done between 99-2004: Engine Rebuild: Total rebuild of existing 327 ci motor by qualified mechanic (Fred's Automotive, Clayton, WA). New motor is just short of 350hp. Engine compartment was detailed, built new transmission cooler lines, repaired wiring as needed, purchased and installed headers, master brake cylinder, turned break drums, new brake pads, new radiator and hoses, new water pump, new fuel pump. I would guess I have less than 2000 miles on the car since all the major repairs have been done. The vehicle came with a new Edelbrock 4 barrel carburetor (650 I think) and Edelbrock head. Suspension: Installation of new shocks, springs, wheel seals, stabilizer bar, bushings, brake hoses, front end alignment by Fred's Automotive. Convertible top improvements: New convertible top cylinders/pump/hose kit, convertible rubber seal and latch.....Fred's Auto. Turbo 350 transmission: Took out old torque flite 2 speed tranny, and had a rebuilt Turbo 350 professionally installed. Interior Improvements: New door panels purchased and then recovered. Refurbished/recovered front and back seats, purchased/recovered new back side panels. Computer stitching of "Impala" on front seats and "Super Sport" on back seats. Recovered front visors. Work done or contracted through Lee Henning upholstery specialist, Deer Park, WA. New vinyl trunk mat, molded carpet kit, sound deadener kit installed. Installation of Promatic 2 / Hurst automatic shifter by Fred's Auto. Electrical improvements: New fuse box and rear light assembly installed by Jake's Automotive, Deer Park, WA. New sound system: Alpine AM/FM/CD receiver purchased and professionally installed under the dash; Eclipse 6.5 inch speakers professionally installed in door panels; Eclipse 12 inch speakers installed in box in the trunk + JBL 600 watt amplifier. Following done in 2006-7 by "Precious Metals" auto body specialists, Deer Park, WA: Exterior refurbish. All rust was cut out and "skins" purchased and welded in around wheel wells and lower rear body panels. New rocker panels. Body repainted gun metal grey with clear coat and metal flake. All new SS tagging, chrome and aluminum body and wheel well trim. Vast majority of the rubber moldings were replaced. New tumblers for locks/ignition. Interior work: New clock installed, but unfortunately still doesn't work. Power antenna installed on passenger side/rear panel. New "Flaming River" tilt steering column + new wood steering wheel installed. Also done 2006-7: New tires: Cooper 235-60-R16 M+S. CS4 - Touring. Less than 1000 miles on them. New wheels: American Racing polished aluminum wheels To do: Top is serviceable without any rips but needs replacement. I would purchase an old AM radio to stick in the dash where the hole is; just for show. I would make adjustment on glove compartment door lock so it opens/closes smoothly. This info is accurate to the best of my knowledge, but car will be sold as-is with no warranty, stated or implied. The value of the car according to Hagerty is approximately $18,634, computed as a Condition 3 vehicle (#1 is highest; 4 is lowest). This car comes from the Western US (salt free roads not a rust bucket) For additional pictures please email me. 2016 Chevrolet Camaro First Drive [w/video]
Fri, Oct 16 2015The Autoblog gang was downright stoked to learn the 2016 Chevy Camaro was next on our test-car docket. Then we found out it was the V6 model. Buzzkill. We were hoping for the snorting V8, or at least the spunky new turbo four-cylinder. The V6? Meh. We've been driving V6 Camaros for, like, six years. It's what you buy if you can't afford anything better, or so say horsepower snobs as they wrinkle their noses and cut their coffee with 93 octane. But after a week with the six-pot Camaro, we'll admit it: we were wrong. The all-new 3.6-liter V6 is strong, sounds good, and is damn fun to drive. Its 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque appear modest by modern standards, but they power the Camaro to 60 miles per hour in 5.1 seconds with the automatic, or in the case of our manual-equipped test car, 5.2 seconds. That's almost half a second quicker than the new turbo four-cylinder model. Yes, it has the same displacement as the old V6. No, it's not the same engine. Upon closer inspection, the V6's potency shouldn't come as a surprise. This engine is from General Motors' newest family of dual-overhead cam powerplants that launched in the Cadillac CTS and ATS. Yes, it has the same displacement as the old V6. No, it's not the same engine. Don't be fooled, and don't underestimate it at stoplights. The strapping V6 is unsuspectingly good, but it's just one of many improvements for the sixth-generation Camaro. Chevy's coupe is lighter, faster, and more modern looking inside and out. It starts with a rear-wheel-drive chassis donated from the Cadillac ATS, though about 70 percent of the components are unique to the Camaro. The 2016 model is about two inches shorter in length (thanks to a shorter wheelbase) and about an inch has been removed from height and width compared to the 2015 model. These lighter underpinnings jumpstarted the Camaro's weight-loss plan, and thanks to extensive use of aluminum, the V6 with the new eight-speed automatic transmission weighs 3,435 pounds – 294 less than its predecessor (the manual-transmission V6 Camaro weighs 3,448 pounds). The V8, meanwhile, sheds 223 pounds. One by one, these elements would merely enhance how the Camaro drives, but taken collectively, they invigorate the new model. It feels much more confident and agile in all circumstances. Put simply, it's a sportier car. Chevy Volt replacement battery cost varies wildly, up to $34,000
Fri, Jan 10 2014There's a growing hubbub in the plug-in vehicle community over what looks like some ridiculously cheap replacement batteries for the Chevrolet Volt going up for sale. GM Parts Online, for example, is selling a replacement Volt battery with an MSRP of $2,994.64 but, with an online discount, the price comes down to $2,305.88. For the 16-kWh pack in the 2012 Volt, that comes to a very low $144.11 per kilowatt hour (kWH). But is it a real deal? How can it be, when a Chevy dealer may quote you a price of up to $34,000 to replace the pack? For a 16-kWh Volt pack, $2,305.88 comes to a very low $144.11 per kWh. But is it a real deal? Battery packs in alternative propulsion vehicles are usually priced by the kWh and, historically, they've been thought to be in the range of $500-per-kWh for OEM offerings. Since automakers are understandably secretive about their costs, we still don't know what the real number is today, but we do know it varies by automaker. Tesla, for example, has said it pays less than $200-per-kWH at the cell level but, of course, a constructed pack would be more. Whatever is going on, li-ion battery prices are trending downward. So, $144.11 certainly sounds great, but what's the story here? Kevin Kelly, manager of electrification technology communications for General Motors, reminded AutoblogGreen that GM Parts Online is not the official GM parts website and that, "the costs indicated on the site are not what we would charge our dealers or owners for a replacement battery. There would be no cost to the Volt owner if their battery needs replacement or repair while the battery is under the eight year/100,000 mile limited warranty coverage provided by Chevrolet." A single price tag also can't be accurate for everyone, Kelly said. "If the customer needs to have their battery repaired beyond the warranty, the cost to them would vary depending on what needs to be replaced or repaired (i.e. number of modules, which specific internal components need replacement, etc.)." he said. "So, it's hard for us to tell you exactly what the cost would be to the customer because it varies depending on what might need to be repaired/replaced. As a result, the core charge would vary." But, is the $2,300 price even accurate for anyone? Thanks to a reader comment, we see that this similar item on New GM Parts makes it look like the lithium-ion modules that Kelly mentioned – where a lot of the expensive bits are – are not included.
GM reworking mandatory OnStar plans for some 2024 models
Tue, Mar 21 2023For the 2023 model year, GM added its OnStar and Connected Services plan as standard equipment to a large number of Buick, GMC, and Chevrolet vehicles. Folding the $1,500 retail price into the MSRPs of models like the GMC Acadia and Buick Encore plumped up prices beyond the usual year-on-year bumps. Looks like there's a reversal in play for 2024, GM Authority reporting that many of the models fitted with OnStar and Connected Services — now called OnStar Premium — will step down to three years of OnStar Remote Access standard.  OnStar Remote Access comes with these features: Remote key fob, vehicle locate, and remote personalization through mobile and in-vehicle apps. Three additional features can be added to the plan: OnStar Guardian, in-vehicle hotspot, and Super Cruise. Owners can also upgrade to OnStar Premium if they choose. Higher trims like Buick's Avenir and GMC's Denali, plus the GMC Hummer and the Cadillac Escalade will retain OnStar Premium as standard equipment. That suite starts with Remote Access and adds: Automatic crash response, stolen vehicle assistance and recovery, OnStar Guardian, in-vehicle app access, unlimited streaming, three years of Super Cruise on vehicles with the hardware, and six months of SiriusXM radio. The Escalade puts a cherry on top with three years Sirius XM instead of six months. The Remote Access plan normally charges $14.99 per month. We're not sure yet if GM will subtract the cost of OnStar Premium from the MSRP and add the $540 for OnStar Remote Access, or if the trial period comes free of charge. Even if that's what happens, the change could take nearly $1,000 off the MSRP of a car like the GMC Acadia before any 2024 increases. We'll know more as the 2024MY models roll out and prices are announced. Related Video 2022 Buick Enclave Avenir revealed
