This is a 1968 Chevrolet El Camino SS396 350 HP and 4 Speed A/C Factory Black on Black Southern California truck that still retains its original black CA license plates. The truck has 93k original miles on the numbers matching 396 shortblock. The original heads were rebuilt at one point some years ago. Original intake and exhaust manifolds. The original Muncie M20 and 12 bolt rear axle are in it; The trans has never been touched, the rear axle was disassembled a couple years back and the housing was chem stripped in preparation for powdercoat and rebuild. The installation is currently temporary in order for the truck to roll. Factory options include special code 223 black bucket seat and console interior, air conditioning, tach and gauges, power windows, and a tilt steering column.

The body is all original, straight and about 99 percent rust free. The only exception is the front fenders which I replaced due to the originals had the marker light holes welded up many years back before the truck was painted white. The fenders on it now are good original GM parts. Floors and bed are good condition and the bed is straight. Minor rust in lower back window sill, left rear floor behind driver and the lower front fender corners as usual. No evidence of ever being driven on salted roads. I am the 4th owner and the original owner is still available with many stories to tell about this truck- he and then his son owned it until around 2003.

Factory documentation includes original build sheet and the Protecto-Plate on the owner's manual.

This is not a running vehicle and will require mechanical work to bring it back to road ready. It has a Lakewood scattershield, Hurst Comp Plus shifter, a Holley carb and Mallory distributor as non-stock items. I wouldn't do anything less than a frame up on this truck, however it could be running/driving in a few weekends of work if desired.

Includes 4 of the original wheels and I found an excellent set of correct little hubcaps that are presently on it. The spare wheel is a '67 and is on the right front. Truck was built with power drum brakes.

Factory black 223 interior has a special pattern and is not reproduced as El Camino. I did find some information online that the pattern was from the Buick line although I have not pursued looking into it.

Title has been in my name for many years- I had plans for a full frame up restoration however my wife has other projects set as my priorities.

This '68 El Camino SS396 is likely a one of one that was ever built like it, and has all the essentials required to make it in the top of the list of most collectible El Caminos.

The El Camino is basically sold as you see it in the pics. It does have new floor underlayment and padding. I do not have a windshield, gas tank or dashpad for it. I do have a front bumper and brackets and that will be installed. Bed rail trim and a few other trim pieces are included, as well as lot of parts in the bed. Non-posi carrier is holding the axles in place. More pics have been added.

A personal inspection of the El Camino is welcomed.

Zombie cars: A dozen discontinued vehicles people still buy new

Thu, Jan 6 2022

Car models come and go, but as revealed by monthly sales data, once a car is discontinued, it doesn't just disappear instantly. And in the case of some models, vanishing into obscurity can be a slow, tedious process. That's the case with the 12 cars we have here. All of them have been discontinued, but car companies keep racking up "new" sales with them. There are actually more discontinued cars that are still registering new sales than what we decided to include here. We kept this list to the oldest or otherwise most interesting vehicles still being sold as new, including a supercar. We'll run the list in alphabetical order, starting with *drumroll* ... BMW 6 Series: 55 total sales BMW quietly removed the 6 Series from the U.S. market during the 2019 model year. It had been available in three configurations, a hardtop coupe, a convertible and a sleek four-door coupe-like shape.   BMW i8: 18 total sales We've always had a soft spot for the BMW i8, despite the fact that it never quite fit into a particular category. It was sporty, but nowhere near as fast as similarly-priced competitors. It looked very high-tech and boasted a unique carbon fiber chassis design and a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but wasn't really designed for maximum efficiency or maximum performance. Still, the in-betweener was very cool to look at and drive, and 18 buyers took one home over the course of 2021.   Chevy Impala: 750 total sales The Impala represented classic American tastes at a time when American tastes were shifting away from soft-riding sedans with big interior room and trunk space and into higher-riding crossovers. A total of 750 sales were inked last year.   Chrysler 200: 15 total sales The Chrysler 200 was actually a pretty nice sedan, with good looks and decent driving dynamics let down by a lack of roominess, particularly in the back seat. Of course, as we said regarding the Chevy Impala, the number of Americans in the market for sedans is rapidly winding down, and other automakers are following Chrysler's footsteps in canceling their slow-selling four-doors. Even if Chrysler never really found its footing in the ultra-competitive midsize sedan segment, apparently dealerships have a few leftover 2017 200s floating around. And for some reason, 15 buyers decided to sign the dotted line to take one of these aging sedans home last year.

2016 Chevy Camaro Convertible gets cleaner looks, improved refinement [UPDATE]

Wed, Jun 24 2015

UPDATE: We have live photos from the reveal. Scroll to the bottom of the story and check them out in the Related Gallery. Back in May, Chevrolet introduced a redesigned Camaro. Now, and not at all surprisingly, the Bowtie brand is showing off the latest Camaro convertible, based on the coupe that debuted on Belle Isle in Detroit. From the beltline down, this is the same car that was so well-received last month. But above the waist, there's an all-new, fully automatic canvas roof that can be raised and lowered at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. On top of that, owners will be able to drop the roof remotely by simply pressing a button on the key. Chevy does not, however, say if this new convertible roof is lighter than last year's top. The biggest change for the Camaro convertible, though, is something we've long yearned for – a proper hard tonneau cover that deploys over the folded roof. The current muscle car's roof fabric has the unpleasant tendency to flap in the breeze. The new droptop shouldn't have that problem, and will likely boast an even cleaner top-down profile to boot. Like the hardtop, though, the Camaro convertible does benefit from the same lightweight structure, that helps trim "at least" 200 pounds of body fat. It should also make use of the same powertrain lineup, with a turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V6, and a 6.2-liter V8 with six-speed manuals or eight-speed automatic transmissions spanning the lineup. "From the beginning, the Camaro's architecture was developed to incorporate a convertible with uncompromised driving dynamics," Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser said in the attached release. "Customers will appreciate what they don't feel: quivers, cowl shake or an under-damped chassis typically found in a four-seat convertible." Increased refinement, a cleaner look, better driving dynamics and a more usable convertible roof? We're looking forward to you 2016 Camaro convertible. Chevy claims the new car arrives in "early 2016," which means we should plan on seeing this droptop at the typically cold and snowy Detroit Auto Show. Until then, check out the full press release from Chevrolet. GM's Oshawa plant may close after Camaro production moves

Sat, Feb 7 2015

Most of the time, when vehicle production is moved from one assembly plant to another, it spells bad news for the former. While General Motors won't go so far as to say its Oshawa, Ontario factory, which is losing the Chevrolet Camaro to the Lansing Grand River plant, is in trouble, analysts seem to think the factory's days are numbered. Forecasts for the facility are far from positive. The loss of the Camaro this year, combined with GM's targeted shutdown of a single-shift assembly line responsible for the fleet-only Chevy Impala Limited and the Equinox crossover is a bad enough omen. But with AutoForecast Solutions CEO Joe McCabe telling The Detroit News that the plant's other two products, the Cadillac XTS and Buick Regal, aren't likely to stick around beyond 2017, things look decidedly grim at Oshawa. "There is a fairly strong chance that the plant could close," Jeff Schuster, senior VP of forecasting for LMC Automotive, told The Detroit News. That doesn't mean that Unifor, Canada's auto union, and the Canadian government are going to let the factory die without a fight. And with the latter chipping in $10 billion as part of GM's 2009 bailout, you might think it has a degree of leverage in the situation. A meeting between the government and the Detroit Three at the 2015 North American International Auto Show revealed that Oshawa is already a topic of conversation. "We made it very clear that we would like to see an indication on the future of Oshawa sooner, in particular because the timing is very challenging for our supply chain to be able to adjust to potentially future orders or changes, but also to know that there are going to be future opportunities at Oshawa," Ontario's Minister of Economic, Development, Employment and Infrastructure Brad Duguid told The Detroit News. "Bottom line: It's time they made a longer-term commitment here," Unifor President Jerry Dias said, echoing Duguid's statements. It's unclear if this sort of strong talk will be enough to save 3,300-plus employees, although based on the analysts' forecasts, we doubt it.
