1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe
Early production car built on Tuesday November 27th, 1962
3,847th car built in 1963
This was also the Split Window that was used on the Steak-N-Shake Restaurants poster as shown below probably hung
in most peoples garage walls. That Steak-N-Shake was the one right here in Springfield, Missouri.
Over 100 additional photos of this car available upon request. Please note these photos were taken just this past
weekend and not years ago. The car looks fresh and very nice not only on top but underneath as well. Must see to
appreciate.
Same owner for the past 17 years and the first time offered for sale since then. Climate controlled stored. The
prior owner from 1999 was a doctor whom owned the car about as many years to. This Corvette has been in the
Springfield, Missouri area for all of those years. Very solid and original car with the original body panels and
all bonding strips. A no-hit front end and fenders with all of the crisp white colored fiberglass finish on the
underside as it should be. The original hood and headlights as well are original as these early 63 headlights still
should be fiberglass with the headlight ring screws on the front side and not on each side of the corners of the
headlight buckets. This is a restored car done very well to high quality standards including the chassis and engine
compartment. This corvette is a rare one being a factory powerglide car and it does still retain its original
numbers matching 327 c.i. engine. Not many can say that these days. The car is nicely optioned with power brakes,
power steering, power windows, knock-off wheels, and the original am wonderbar radio. The options on this car are
original ones but the knock-off wheels are new reproduction ones and there is a set of 5 of them. The spare knock
off has a correct reproduction bias-ply whitewall tire as the other 4 on the car are new reproduction Uniroyal
radial whitewall tires that have just recently been added. The tires are new with less than 50 miles on them. There
is an original jack with the car along with a lead hammer that has not been used for the wheels.
Body & Paint:
The car is finished in Red base coat clear coat paint and buffed out nicely. In fact it is overdone and way much
better paint than the factory finish. The car was disassembled when restored and all trim, glass, bumpers, doors,
were removed when painted. The car has a lot of shine and does look good underneath the lights unlike most that may
look good outside but when under lights you see many blemishes, dirt nibs, etc. Not this one.All of the stainless trim was removed and polished and not dings on them. The
window glass is original except for the front windshield as it is a new replacement. The window rubbers were
replaced including the rear window rubbers. The vent window rubbers are still good as well and the vent windows
open and close easily. The original pieces of glass are very good with only a few minor blemishes but do not need
to be replaced. Better than most I have seen as original ones. The grill was replaced, bumpers rechromed,
taillights replaced, new outside mirror, original hood grills restored and they fit exceptional, correct style
wiper arms, rocker moldings replaced, many of the new replacement parts came from Long Island Corvette Parts. All
of your bumper bolts, grill screws, replaced from Long Island as well. If you notice in the photo shot of the rear
car on the lift you can see the underside of the bumpers how they are nice and clean and not rusted or corrosion.
Take a look at some of the others for sale and compare the difference and details. A very nice overall car done
from the top to bottom. The hood, headlights, and doors fit and shut nice.
Interior:
The interior on this car is exceptional. The dash pads are the original ones and not the thicker aftermarket ones
most commonly seen. The pads have no cracks nor repairs and have been re-dyed to freshen them up. The instruments
are the original ones and have been completely restored along with the clock. The bezels are nice and the finish
is mint. The steering wheel is an original with some of the grain texture still visible. The radio is the original
am wonderbar as early 63's were, and works but does not pick up many am stations as there are fewer and fewer these
days. The glovebox is a new gm one and fits nice. Plastic original style one. The console and all pieces are new
from Long Island Corvette. It fits well and is one of the best reproduction ones out there. This item alone will
cost you well over $1,000 just for the complete console, Shifter boot is new, carpet is new, seats are new with do
have distinguished seems, seats were well done, headliner is the original cross-hatch pattern and in excellent
condition, original jack board behind seats, original jack still with car, no repairs in the jack storage area as
commonly seen from replacing u-joints, door panels are new as well. Both fresh air vents function properly and the
underside of dash assembly looks nice. No birdcage rust. Very solid and original. Sunvisors are new to. The
seatbelts are a replacement kind with chrome buckles. They are not original but look very good for replacement
ones.
Engine Compartment & Undercarriage:
The engine compartment nicely detailed with GM hoses, clamps, etc. All ignition shielding is new and there. The air
cleaner is an original one. The radiator was replaced with a new aluminum Dewitt one and is a correct dated coded
reproduction one. That is close to $1,000 finished in glossy black. The overflow (expansion tank) is also from
Dewitt and is new date coded. Correct fan blade, original power brake master cylinder, correct exhaust manifolds,
correct valve covers, intake manifold is the correct GM part # but is dated D 24 63, original steering box, heater
box restored, overall a nice example of a 1963 engine compartment. The inner front fender lips are excellent as
most have been sanded off. The back side of the hood has been refinished as well. The chassis on the car was
completely disassembled, rebuilt and detailed. All new bushings, a-arms, spindles, springs, front sway bar,
radiator core support, all removed, blasted and refinished. The rear end was removed and detailed to. Rear leaf
spring refinished with new liners and painted grey, trailing arms all removed, refinished and rebuilt, new correct
aluminized exhaust system from Corvette Central, original spare tire compartment restored and is a near perfect
one, (the 1963's are different on these tubs), frame sanded and painted, all engine detailed, inspection marks and
chassis markings put back onto the car, oil pan is in good shape, very nicely presented and detailed. The frame has
no rust or holes and is still in great shape. The frame is not rough or heavy pitted. The rear exhaust panels fits
as good as any and the rocker moldings line up good at both ends. A lot of times when the body panels have been
replaced on these cars you will not see the panels line up well. The bottom of the chassis is mostly all bare
fiberglass with the original white colored finish from the factory. Again most of all the hardware on the chassis
was replaced with new.
The overall of this Corvette is a very nice one. If you are in the market for a nice split window this would be the
one to have. The car drives as good as it looks and runs out smoothly. Plenty of power as well. Transmission shifts
good for a powerglide. It is fun to drive with that powerglide and the other power options. This car can one to
show or drive if desired. I cannot think of a better investment today than a 1963 Corvette Split Window. The most
sought after Corvette on the market today and one of the most sought after collector cars in existence. First year
for the Sting Ray name and the only year for the Split Window. The prices are continually climbing higher and
higher on this type of car.
Features on this car include:
327 C.I. V8 Engine (4BBL Carburetor)
Powerglide Automatic Transmission
Power Windows
Power Steering
Power Brakes
AM Wonderbar Radio
5 Knock-Off Aluminum Wheels (New Reproductions)
Whitewall Radial Tires
I do have an owners manual, assembly manual, sales brochure, and some photos of the restoration put together in a
portfolio. The instruments all work except for the clock. It was working and restored but will look into getting
that fixed again. The headlights open and close with ease. Horns still work, all lights still function properly.
Always has passed a Missouri inspection when needed.

Autoblog's Editors' Picks: Our complete list of the best new vehicles
Mon, May 13 2024It's not easy to earn an “EditorsÂ’ Picks” at Autoblog as part of the rating and review process that every new vehicle goes through. Our editors have been at it a long time, which means weÂ’ve driven and reviewed virtually every new car you can go buy on the dealer lot. There are disagreements, of course, and all vehicles have their strengths and weaknesses, but this list features what we think are the best new vehicles chosen by Autoblog editors. We started this formal review process back in 2018, so there's quite of few of them now. So what does it mean to be an EditorsÂ’ Pick? In short, it means itÂ’s a car that we can highly recommend purchasing. There may be one, multiple, or even zero vehicles in any given segment that we give the green light to. What really matters is that itÂ’s a vehicle that weÂ’d tell a friend or family member to go buy if theyÂ’re considering it, because itÂ’s a very good car. The best way to use this list is is with the navigation links below. Click on a segment, and you'll quickly arrive at the top rated pickup truck or SUV, for example. Use the back button to return to these links and search in another segment, like sedans. If youÂ’ve been keeping up with our monthly series of the latest vehicles to earn EditorsÂ’ Pick status, youÂ’re likely going to be familiar with this list already. If not, welcome to the complete list that weÂ’ll be keeping updated as vehicles enter (and others perhaps exit) the good graces of our editorial team. We rate a new car — giving it a numerical score out of 10 — every time thereÂ’s a significant refresh or if it happens to be an all-new model. Any given vehicle may be impressive on a first drive, but we wait until itÂ’s in the hands of our editors to put it through the same type of testing as every other vehicle that rolls through our test fleet before giving it the EditorsÂ’ Pick badge. This ensures consistency and allows more voices to be heard on each individual model. And just so you donÂ’t think weÂ’ve skipped trims or variants of a model, we hand out the EditorsÂ’ Pick based on the overarching model to keep things consistent. So, when you read that the 3 Series is an EditorsÂ’ Pick, yes, that includes the 330i to the M3 and all the variants in between. If thereÂ’s a particular version of that car we vehemently disagree with, we make sure to call that out.
Top horsepower-per-dollar cars in 2017
Tue, Feb 17 2015Bang for the buck. That quasi-scientific statistic is bandied about by motor heads everywhere from classrooms to barrooms, though the truth of the matter is that it's exceedingly complex to measure. A fair performance-per-dollar index would include something like cross-referencing MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) with point-to-point times on a track or driving route, which is obviously hard to do comprehensively. But, for the sheer joy of talking about cars and playing with a big spreadsheet, there's always the horsepower-per-dollar index, which is more straightforward, albeit hilariously flawed. There are vagaries even with this simple formula, of course: MSRP for vehicles can change at a moment's notice, to say nothing of the bottom-line shifting that happens with local deals or showroom negotiation. For this list we're running with the straight MSRP wherever possible, and as recently reported as we can get it. All the vehicles on this list are 2017 models, and all trims are reported where the lowest price and differing power levels intersect. Some choices were made for personal preference and some for sanity, avoiding things like all 48 trim levels of the Ford Transit, all with the same horsepower). If this list were a simple top ten, or even a top fifty, you'd be bored to tears with all the red, white and blue that is represented. Following perfectly with conventional wisdom, American cars really do lead the world where hp/$ is concerned. So, for the sake of variety (and the sheer joy of seeing a minivan 'win' one round of this thing) I've sorted out some top five and bottom five lists for broad power categories. Let's dive in. Less Than 100 Horsepower Okay, okay, this is hardly a category we'll grant you. But we've often tried to click off all the sub-100-hp cars on sale in the US, and making this list gave us an excuse. It also illustrates that none of these smallish vehicles bring cheap horsepower to the table - for that you'll need a motorcycle. The segment-leading Chevy Spark (above) asks just over $139 for each hp, and that Smart Fortwo Electric Drive has hp on sale for about the same price as its very distant family cousin, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (insert your favorite Smart joke here... we know you want to).
2016 Chevy Volt wins Green Car of the Year
Thu, Nov 19 2015The award ceremony for the 2016 Green Car Of The Year announcement at the LA Auto Show today started with a joke video by juror Jay Leno. Showing of a restored and refurbished 100-year-old Detroit Electric EV, Leno said that while there were a lot of different powertrains in the running this year, he didn't expect any German diesels to win. Yuk yuk. There was no doubt that Leno was right; there were no diesels in the finalist's circle. The winner this year was the new, second-generation Chevy Volt, a plug-in hybrid with a 53-mile electric range and 106 MPGe. The first-gen car won the title five years ago, making the Volt the first model to be crowned Green Car Of The Yera more than once. The other finalists this year were the Audi A3 E-Tron, the new Toyota Prius, the Hyundai Sonata, and the Honda Civic. One of Green Car Journal's most important factors in deciding the winner is widespread availability, said Green Car Journal editor Ron Cogan as he announced the award. Qualifying vehicles also have to be on sale by January 1st of the award year (in this case, 2016). For the record, AutoblogGreen readers also picked the Volt to win in our poll a few months ago with 42 percent of the vote. Second place was the Prius, with 21 percent. Earlier this year, Green Car Journal had to strip the awards from two diesel vehicles, the 2009 VW Jetta TDI, which won in 2008, and the 2010 Audi A3 TDI, the 2010 winner. We enjoyed our seat time in the new Volt, and you can read our review here. Related Video:
