Watch a 2015 Corvette Z06 run the quarter in 11.7 seconds
Sun, Dec 28 2014We're not writing about this because it's an amazing run, we're writing about it because it appears to be the first run. Someone took a 2015 Corvette Z06 to Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas and blasted it down through the quarter mile. It's still wearing the dealer number in wax pen on the windshield and dealer plates, so this example is fresh from the mold. It's also a seven-speed manual. General Motors said the row-your-own Z06 can do the 'strip in 11.2 seconds, and they undoubtedly had a professional driver and more than one run to set that time. To have Just Some Guy show up at the raceway and do an 11.7 at 120.54 mph on his first run means we expect good things to come as Z06s get delivered to their owners. Check out the run in the video.
Minor updates coming to 2017 Chevy Volt
Wed, Dec 30 2015The 2016 Chevrolet Volt has just appeared at dealerships, but already the talk has turned to the mildly updated 2017 model going on sale in a few months. The new Volt has already won the 2016 Green Car of the Year award and is sparking a noticeable uptick in sales over the outgoing model. Chevy is now planning to keep interest in the second-generation Volt strong with some tweaks and increased availability. The main equipment change to the 2017 Volt will be the option of adaptive cruise control on both the base LT and uplevel Premier, according to CarsDirect. While the Volt already offers safety technology such as blind-spot monitoring and forward collision warning, adaptive cruise has been conspicuously absent. But the largest change will be that the 2017 Volt gets nationwide availability. GM decided to focus on strong markets for the original Volt when it chose where to introduce the new model. Buyers interested in the second-generation model have until now been limited to making purchases in states such as California, Maryland and the Northeast. This will all change soon. Conversely, you can have a 2016 Nissan Leaf now in all 50 states, or a 2016 Toyota Prius very shortly. But in our first drive of the Volt, we found it to be, "an efficient, no-compromise EV" and worth the wait for those who don't live in the states with the strictest emissions laws. Perhaps the reason the 2016 Volt is already being given an injection of dealer incentives is because of its relatively short lifespan. The 2017 Chevy Volt should arrive on dealer lots by spring 2016. Recharge Wrap-up: Toyota FCV Rally Car To Compete, Barra bullish on Chevy Volt
Fri, Oct 31 2014The Toyota FCV will compete in the last stage of the 2014 Japanese Rally Championship. The sport-tuned hydrogen-powered car will tackle the 177-mile Shinshiro Rally on November 1 and 2, emitting no greenhouse gases in the process. The rally course will help prove the safety of the vehicle before it goes on sale in Japan in the next several months. The Toyota FCV, rumored to be called "Mirai" in Japan, will begin sales there before April, according to Toyota, and in the summer in the US and Europe. Read more in the press release below. Carsharing is becoming more popular, and more visible, throughout the world, including the US. According to WardsAuto columnist John McElroy, 18 percent of US drivers have used some sort of carsharing service. Additionally, he says 60 percent of Americans are familiar with Zipcar and Uber. Mercedes' Harald Kroeger says promotions like free parking for carshares in Stuttgart are encouraging growth for Daimler's carsharing service, Car2go. Read more at WardsAuto. Ethanol is being help up by rail transport, according to ethanol producer Green Plains. More and more stations are carrying E15 blend gasoline, but grain producers have complained that crude oil is given higher priority by the rail lines shipping it, which rail companies deny. Union Pacific and BNSF Railway say they are stepping up service to make sure that ethanol can be shipped reliably to customers. Read more at Omaha World-Herald. General Motors "has placed a significant bet [on] the electrification of the automobile," says CEO Mary Barra. In a speech to the Detroit Economic Club this week, she spoke about the Chevrolet Volt, and its importance to GM's future. While Barra admits the Volt's success has been "not everything we wanted," it has provided experience, and shows that EVs have "an important role in the future of GM." The new Volt is more refined, stores more energy, has longer range, uses less fuel and is a big investment for Michigan. She announced that the new Volt's electric drive system will be built in Warren, and that all of its major components will be made in Michigan. "Silicon Valley doesn't have a corner on the market for innovation, creativity and drive," says Barra. "These qualities exist here – in this region – as well."
