This is a special Corvair with owner history to 1973, courtesy of the 2nd owner's grandson, who was also the previous owner. According to him, the mileage reading of 25,533 is original to the car. Its condition certainly reflects this.
Here is some information from the previous owner's desk to us,
" The Spyder was purchased by my grandfather in Littlefield, Texas in 1973 with very low miles in excellent condition. He actually had several Corvairs and gave me a 1964 coupe when I was 16, but the '63 Spyder was the prize. He kept it original and running, but was really only used in parades. He was fairly active in CORSA for a time, but not past the 1990's. It was stored in his barn until I took possession around 2003 when he moved into a nursing home. I kept it in the garage and started restoring a lot of the original parts so I could drive it myself. It was driven when the weather was nice."
By 2010, the aforementioned owner treated this Corvair to an extensive restoration courtesy of Wilson's Repair in Garland, Texas. Wilson's specializes in classic car repair, service and restoration. You can find them online with other examples of their work. We have the receipts for all work performed by Wilson's, totaling over $40,000 since 2008. This company also helped maintain this car mechanically for a number of years prior to the restoration. We also have an array of Corvair specific items such as a hard to find original Corvair Custom Feature & Accessories book from Chevrolet 1963, a original dealer brochure of the 1963 line-up, an original Motor Trend advertisement from May 1963 asking the question, " Is the Spyder's thrust just so much hot air? " Well, we think not!

The original Ember red paint was refinished in its correct shade then color-sanded, polished and sealed, while the engine compartment still retains the original paint. The metal body on this car is excellent, very straight throughout, with all original floorboards and trunk. This is a true dry climate car its entire life. The car displays beautifully inside, outside, and underneath. The replaced rubber seals have been replaced and chrome restored throughout. The glass seals were replaced including the vent window seals, window felts, etc. The tires were replaced with radials all around, including the spare.
Open the doors to the 1963 Spyder. This interior is excellent. The original seats were stripped down and completely restored. New foam was installed with new correct seat covers. The original carpeting was replaced with new Ember color original type carpeting. The seat belts have been replaced with new sets front and back. The dash gauge pod assembly was sent off and completely restored with receipts to verify. All gauges are completely functional, including the speedometer, odometer, engine vacuum / boost, tachometer, gasoline level gauge, & cylinder head temperature gauge, The gauges backlighting (illumination) is also functional throughout. The optional Delco AM Pushbutton radio works excellent. The door panels feature the original paint along the top sections, both front and rear. The panels themselves are excellent. The window cranks work easily on all four windows. The dash itself is in excellent condition. The steering wheel is original and beautiful, with some patina. The chrome horn ring is excellent, the turbocharged emblem clear. So much extensive work has been done to this car. The ducting has been replaced throughout. All of this work adds up to over $36,000 in 2010 receipts alone.
The original engine was removed and completely rebuilt. We have photos of the bare block along with various components disassembled prior to completion. All of this engine work was completed in November, 2010 to the sum of over $12,000 with verifying receipts. The crankshaft was micro-polished. The pistons were replaced. The assembly is balanced and blueprinted. All seals, gaskets, and bearings were replaced. The turbocharger was sent off and completely rebuilt. The cylinder heads were sent off and rebuilt by Corvair specialists. All of the work is accompanied with receipts to verify. So much was done to this car, I will do my best to detail. Even the original charging generator was sent off and rebuilt/restored and battery replaced. Over $1,100 was spent on the charging system and accompanying parts alone. The 4-speed manual transmission was completely rebuilt. The shifter has also been gone through with new bushings, etc. The rear end / differential is rebuilt. The ring gear and pinion have been replaced with a new numerically lower gear for better low-end acceleration around town. A new spider gear kit was installed. Again, receipts verify all of this work (November 2010). Over $3,500 was spent refurbishing the transmission and rear end. The shifter boot was also replaced with an NOS unit. Again, all of this work is documented with receipts.
Today, the engine compartment shows excellent. This 150 horsepower powerplant idles smooth and has excellent acceleration. This was impressive horsepower for 1963, given this flat-six engine is only 145 cubic inches. The turbocharger makes strong boost. In November, 2013, the crankshaft seal was replaced and engine fully inspected at a cost of approximately $678.00 by Wilson's Repair. At that time the alternator belt was replaced, a vacuum leak repaired, along with the replaced seal, all verified work with receipt. This car is ready to drive and show. I've got various maintenance items new in the packing I will include ; 6 oil filters, new spark plug wires, set of new spark plugs, and a new drive belt for the new owner. You will note the engine compartment still features much of the original finish and all original sheetmetal. The battery tray and spare carrier are excellent.
The original trim identification plate is intact along with the original VIN plate affixed to the door jamb. This car is an original Ember red car ordered with the white convertible top and red vinyl interior. You can see much of the Magic Mirror acrylic lacquer is intact along with original insulation in the engine compartment.
The undercarriage is a further testament to the amazing condition of this Spyder. Note the beautiful original floorboards have been refinished in correct red oxide primers and green etching primer. The suspension has been rebuilt with replaced bushings, ball joints, etc. The steering has been gone through as well, steering box rebuilt. The exhaust system has been replaced. The frame rails are perfect, never jacked or dented or repaired. This is an amazing little car that shows its mileage and restoration. We've really enjoyed it.
The original 13-inch wheels have been refinished to match the Ember red paint. The original Monza 900 wheel covers are currently on the car. We also have a complete set of smooth hubcaps and a set of Chevrolet Corvair stamped hubcaps included.
The convertible top and related components are outstanding. The convertible top was replaced along with all seals. Over $3,000 was spent on the convertible top, accompanying parts and installation effort with receipts to verify in 2010. All of the glass is also excellent, all seals and weatherstrip and felts were replaced during the restoration. The roll-up windows work effortlessly.
The interior panels and armrests are in great shape. All door seals, etc. were replaced during the restoration.
The door undersides are excellent, original metal and drain holes in place. Also the original polished lower body trim is in great shape. This car is also optioned with door edge guards.
The long-time 2nd owner was a member of the CORSA society. He purchased the car in 1973 and we still have the Littlefield, Texas dealership key chain and two sets of keys.
The glovebox courtesy lighting works. The glovebox door & decal is original as is the glovebox liner.

The red convertible top boot snaps into place over the correct white top.
The headlamps are dated T-3 units with exception of one GE bulb, all work. The brake lights and stop lights work too. The headlamp bezels have been beautifully restored. The tail light brightwork is excellent.
Of the 19,099 Spyders built in 1963, only 7,472 were convertibles.

Before General Motors created the Geo brand for cars built or designed by its overseas partners, the Chevrolet Division put its badges on U.S.-market versions of the Toyota Corolla Sprinter, the Suzuki Cultus and the Isuzu Gemini. Those cars were known as the Nova, the Sprint and the Spectrum, and all became Geos starting with the 1989 model year. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of the last Chevy Spectrums ever sold, found in a Denver self-service yard a few months ago. Midway through 1988, the Chevrolet Spectrum abruptly became the Geo Spectrum and was assigned to the 1989 model year. This car was built in May 1988, making it one of the very last of the pre-Geo Spectrums. The Chevrolet/Geo Spectrum was available as a four-door sedan and as a three-door hatchback, from the 1985 through 1989 model years. For 1988 only, a Spectrum Sport Coupe package, featuring some trim upgrades and these rad decals, could be had on the hatchback. This car was essentially identical to its Isuzu-badged counterpart, the I-Mark. In 1988, the MSRP for the cheapest possible Chevy Spectrum hatchback (the stripped-down Spectrum Express) was $6,495, while its somewhat better-equipped I-Mark twin started at $7,439 (that's $17,128 and $19,617 in 2023 dollars). Meanwhile, the base Hyundai Excel hatchback listed at $5,295 and the Yugo GV cost a hilarious $4,199 ($13,963 and $10,941 in today's money). Power came from this 1.5-liter SOHC four-cylinder, rated at 70 horsepower. A turbocharged version with 110 horsepower was available as well. You could get an automatic transmission in the Spectrum, but this car has the base five-speed manual. This car didn't get the optional air conditioning, but at least it has the traditional Isuzu HVAC control icons featuring blow-dried hair and high-heeled dominatrix boots. Just over 170,000 miles on the odometer. Someone installed a pretty good (for the 1980s) Blaupunkt Charlotte CR148 cassette deck in the dash. This was a necessity if you wanted to enjoy full appreciation of the music of the era. The Spectrum is special! It's as slick as city rain. "I didn't spend a lot of money but with my Spectrum it looks like I did." Joe Isuzu mocked Toyota salesmen when pitching the I-Mark. As was nearly always the case during the 1980s, the JDM ads for the same car were much more fun. They should have recreated this commercial with Spectrums.
DETROIT — General Motors says it will ask the federal government for one national gas mileage standard, including a requirement that a percentage of auto companies' sales be zero-emissions vehicles. Mark Reuss, GM's executive vice president of product development, said the company will propose that a certain percentage of nationwide sales be made up of vehicles that run on electricity or hydrogen fuel cells. GM says a nationwide program modeled on such a requirement in California could result in 7 million electric vehicles, or EVs, on U.S. roads by 2030. California wants 15.4 percent of vehicle sales by 2025 to be EVs or other zero emission vehicles. Nine other states, including Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, have adopted those requirements. In January, California Governor Jerry Brown set a target of 5 million zero-emission vehicles in California by 2030. The Trump administration criticizes California's ZEV mandate, saying it requires automakers to spend tens of billions of dollars developing vehicles that most consumers do not want, only to sell them at a loss. Reuss told reporters that governments and industries in Asia and Europe "are working together to enact policies now to hasten the shift to an all-electric future. It's very simple: America has the opportunity to lead in the technologies of the future." A national mandate also would create jobs and reduce fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and "make EVs more affordable," Reuss added. GM, the nation's largest automaker, will spell out the request Friday in written comments on a Trump administration proposal to roll back Obama-era fuel economy and emissions standards, freezing them at 2020 levels instead of gradually making them tougher. Under a regulation finalized by the Environmental Protection Agency at the end of the Obama administration, the fleet of new automobiles would have to get 36 miles per gallon by 2025, 10 mpg higher than the current requirement. But the Trump administration's preferred plan is to freeze the standards starting in 2021. Administration officials say waiving the tougher fuel efficiency requirements would make vehicles more affordable, which would get safer cars into consumer hands more quickly. GM on Thursday said it doesn't support the freeze, but wants flexibility to deal with consumers' shift from cars to less-efficient SUVs and trucks.
Automotive News reports that General Motors may slash production or ramp up discounts in order to deal with an oversupply of pickup trucks. GM currently has more than double the standard supply of pickups, and the vehicles are threatening to dampen the automaker's profits for 2013. Typically, automakers try to sustain a 60- to 75-day supply of vehicles, but GM is currently loaded with a 139-day supply, as of last month. At the end of November, the automaker was sitting on 245,853 units. The manufacturer says that it will adjust production accordingly before laying any incentives on the profitable pickups. Even so, there's some concern that the inventory swell could hurt the roll-out of the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. GM actually began slowly stepping back production in August, but it's clear the company will take further action as it heads toward the end of the year and into the next. Analysts predict the automaker could reduce pickup manufacturing by nearly half in the first quarter of 2013. That still may not be enough to keep GM from laying extra cash on the Silverado and GMC Sierra. While the company's incentive spending was down in November compared to the same month in 2011, both the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 saw double-digit percentage increases in sales last month while the Silverado and Sierra numbers slid compared to a year prior. Incentive spending could help move more trucks and add some balance to the GM inventory surge.
