This little marketing exercise is to sell a 1970 Chevelle SS396 with the L78 option.  Sadly, I am one of the pre-eminent experts on the L78 variant which would suggest I need to get a life.  In this case I will use the funds to start a patented fire escape company.  Have owned the car since September of 2003.  It was delivered with 29413 miles on the odometer; it now has 32368 which represent about 300 miles per year.  I will try and not use adjectives like awesome, born, flawless, and incredible since it as the end of the day a car, but also in this case, an investment.   There are a few thousand LS6 cars out there for sale on any given day.  I suspect a few more then actually built aka: 67 Tri Carb Vettes and 69 Z-28’s.  Even the $100K cars have flaws, for example the radio ground is never on any of them.  My 1394 positives selling  rusty Chevelle and Corvette parts to other lunatic/correctophile nut jobs like myself has proven to be an difficult task.  There is no pleasing this crowd. (Note the questions I am going to get regarding the always car show arguments of how Kansas City made Chevelles versus Atlanta.

Please note that if you challenge some of my assertions please include the page of the assembly manual, a picture of you standing in front of your L78 or LS6 and a recent copy of USA today showing proof of life and ownership of your car while holding the build sheet.

Take notes kids:

Have original build sheet (not pictured) it is old and yellow but I took the picture.  The block is CE and the heads set for unleaded gas.   In every way I tried my damndest to adhere to the very dog eared assembly manual.  I scored the junk yards in five states to get OEM parts whenever possible.  So, the fan, coil, alternator, oil cap, radiator cap, clips etc. are OEM.  I am too stooped to rig stuff regardless.

I rebuilt the carb, alternator, smog system (pictured, but not installed, too costly), Added an NOS AM Radio. Changed all fluids, drained the tank well, and blew all the lines

Car has had console, buckets added by the previous owners.   I can tell you of a few junk yards in Minnesota and North Dakota where you can get a snazzy bench seat.

The paint is over 15 years old, as is the bright work.   There is NO-END to what a person can spend on paint.  If you plan to drive it then keep this in mind. It will go down the road just swell with it’s current paint.

The car is a high end driver, you cannot eat off the chassis as it is factory rustproofed and my aforementioned no life did not include this removal process for a driver. I have never been to a car show where the couple with the lawn chairs that match the paint on the car were dining off the floor pan. These under litium control types always have that “Look but Don’t Touch” sign on their life defining Chevelle.  It on the other hand, under the hood is a tour de force’ in technical correctness.  Non-correct, if you’re keeping score:

The Brake booster is a repop with Delco Moraine on it, but it should be upside down on the passenger side.  The radiator is a four rows but not OEM.   The water pump has a 1970 code date.

The radiator cap in the picture (opps) is the stainless RC15 replacement.  I have the correct galvanized cap (OEM).

The fenders have been replaced at some point.  The height of the SS emblems appears to be 2.1334 inches to high.

The alternator bolt is wrong but it has been corrected, I woke up screaming after I had time to reflect on this gross and obvious transgression.

The battery is modern with a Delco cover, the corrent spring battery cables are new.

I will give a free under hood radio ground to the first emailed who sends the page in the assembly manual.  Note the even the $75K and up cars for sale lack this glaring example of correctness.   When I sit in front of the computer late at night I scan the pictures of competitors for this and other serious flaws life changing flaw.

The driver’s side smog tube is wrong.  This picture was taken a few years ago, since then I have replaced it with the correct tube.

Since the 2003 purchase, all the wiring harnesses have been replaced, tires, brakes, gas tank, exhaust system, carpet,  headliner, brake lines, fuel lines, alternator,  fan,  fuel pump, horn relay, voltage regulator,  dash, radio, speakers and anything  else that could catch fire or contribute to one.  I am a bleeder and a coward. I have about $8K in receipts for some of these baubles.

Some things to check on the competition L car auctions: The oil cap should be chrome with a small SE stamp on it. The dip stick should have a small yellow tip and natural steel.  The radiator cap needs to be galvanized with a strong script on the cap.  The top cover should have a reinforcement tap on the driver side.  The 4 speed knob on the L cars hould be silver (there is a nice diagram on the console if you get confused).  The smog tubes have 2 brackets to support the vacuum and fuel lines.  The distributor cap should have Patent Pending and a small R to note resistor plugs, but no Patent Number.  The patent was issued in 1957 and ran for 17 years.  You can buy these caps for a few hundred.  See? There is no end to it.

I am starting a business and need the funds.  I do not need a trade nor will I entertain the concept of a 1970 Duster with a blower motor etc, or whatever POS style car your wife wants you to get rid of...  or else the Female Fun Limitation Factor will kick in, and you know what that means.

In the long standing tradition of Barrett Jackson I WILL NOT GIVE OUT THE RESERVE! I WILL NOT GIVE OUT THE RESERVE! I WILL NOT GIVE OUT THE RESERVE!  Also, if your boss got you sleeping at the dealership do not call me for a price either.  Have at least 10 ebays bids and the same spotless record I enjoy before you low ball me.

Feel free to ask questions, cars is in Vadnais Heights Minnesota.   I will answer and publish any serious questions and publish the stooped ones where I get to slice and dice the people stuck with 1971/72 low compression cars.  Good luck.

Uncle Johnny (jjj315)

GM Ultium tech can scavenge heat from everywhere, even you

Mon, Apr 25 2022

GM likes to give us tidbits about its Ultium platform from time to time, and today it’s telling us about the platformÂ’s ability to capture waste heat from the propulsion system. In addition to capturing from the propulsion system, it can also capture humidity from both inside and outside the vehicle and even from passengersÂ’ body heat. Yes, you, your family and/or your friends are a usable heat source as far as GM EVs are concerned. It then deploys the heat in an advantageous way. If at this point, youÂ’re screaming, "Heat pump!" youÂ’d be right. WeÂ’re talking about an elaborate heat pump system that GM is using for its Ultium-based vehicles. Every Ultium-based GM vehicle gets this system that is covered by 11 patents and four publications. The waste heat it collects is used in a number of ways, but its primary use is to heat the cabin quickly and efficiently. GM claims it can heat the cabin of its Ultium-based vehicles quicker than vehicles with traditional internal combustion engines. Plus, when put to use, GM claims that using the heat pump provides its EVs with up to 10% more range than theyÂ’d have without. Beyond heating the cabin, the heat pump is capable of putting waste heat to use by preheating the battery prior to charging so that you can charge quicker. The system can even cool the propulsion system in preparation for Watts to Freedom (WTF) launch control starts. GM says this was vital in helping the Hummer EV achieve its bonkers 0-60 mph time of about 3 seconds. “Having a ground-up EV architecture gives us the freedom to build in standard features like UltiumÂ’s energy recovery capabilities,” said Doug Parks, GM executive VP of global product development, purchasing and supply chain. “This helps us squeeze more efficiency, performance and overall customer benefit out of our EVs.” GM says itÂ’s been developing heat pump technology since the EV1 and its heat pump. This is the modern evolution of that technology, and GM says itÂ’s going to be implemented in every Ultium-based vehicle as a standard feature. 2016 Chevy Volt ads strike frustrating, yet familiar, chord

Fri, Oct 2 2015

Sometimes, it's hard to let go. In the six years that GM has been advertising and selling the Chevy Volt, one dominant message is that the car is an EV without any range anxiety. On the one hand, this is a positive thing: our car does something that other electric vehicles don't. Of course, there's another, more reasonable take on the message that EVs only equal limited range: don't promote this viewpoint if you ever plan on selling a pure EV. But, of course, this is exactly what GM is doing with a new ad for the 2016 Chevy Volt. Called Elevator, the spot (watch it above) compares driving an all-electric car with riding in an elevator getting stuck. Your Nissan Leaf might run out of electricity, the ad says, and that would be as uncomfortable as being trapped between floors. The main problem, of course, is that Chevy also offers the Spark EV and is getting ready to sell the Bolt EV. Does the company think that everyone will forget these anti-EV commercials when it come time to shop for a Bolt? Even worse, does GM think we've forgotten the Anthem ad for the Volt back in 2010? Apparently, so. Elevator isn't the only ad for the 2016 Volt that GM debuted today. The other, called Time Capsule (below), takes a swipe at the Toyota Prius. Trouble is, there are two easy ways to dismiss this ad as well. First, and most obviously, if GM is against using old technology, then why does it continue to shove a 100-year-old fossil fuel engine into almost every car it builds? Second, attacking the Prius for using 15-year-old tech – when said tech is still able to mop the floor with any hybrid from GM in the fuel economy race - is more like an admission of defeat than anything to be proud of. "Hey look, the Prius uses technology from the '90s," GM says. To which the observant viewer will ask, "Well, then why can't you build a 50-mile-per-gallon hybrid, GM?" It's also worth noting that Chevy has been on a misguided advertising streak as of late. We bashed their ads that suggested its Silverado is better than the F-150 because it uses steel instead of aluminum, too, especially since those commercials used shark cages and stupid superhero costumes in an attempt to make a point. Chevy, stop assuming we're all idiots. Please. Now, the 2016 Volt is a great car and I know that GM can make a darn good Volt ad (like this one), so seeing the company shoot solid fuel-efficient technologies in the back (again and again) is just frustrating.

Diesel details: Comparing Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, Chevy Silverado Duramax, Ford F-150 Powerstroke

Thu, Jun 13 2019

With specifications for the 2019 Ford F-150 Power Stroke diesel already out, and the details on the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel and Chevy Silverado Duramax (and its GMC Sierra twin) trickling out, we felt it was a good time to start comparing the full-size trucks' light-duty diesels. Bear in mind, we've only driven one of these new diesel trucks, so we'll be sticking to numbers for now. Some numbers haven't been announced yet, either, but stay tuned, because we'll be updating this post with additional specifications as they become available. And if you want to compare any other versions of these trucks with other vehicles, be sure to check out our comparison tool. Now let's start comparing, starting with our big chart of numbers below. As we can plainly see, these trucks are quite closely matched. Each one has six cylinders, a displacement of 3.0 liters and a turbocharger to boost it. The output of each is somewhat close, too. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is the torque king at 480 pound-feet, 20 more than the GM trucks and 40 more than the Ford. The GM trucks win on power, though, with 277 ponies, 17 more than the Ram, and 27 more than the Ford. GM does report that you get their trucks' peak 460 pound-feet of torque from 1,500 rpm to 3,000 rpm, whereas the others only report peak torque at a particular point in the rev band, but all of these trucks should have wide, flat torque curves as you would expect from modern turbodiesels. 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel View 8 Photos Engine output is only one part of the truck performance equation. We also have towing and payload capacity, as well as fuel economy. With towing, the Ram 1500 is the current leader with a maximum capacity of 12,560 pounds. That tops the Ford F-150's 11,400-pound tow rating by well over 1,000 pounds. The F-150 can carry 2,020 pounds in its bed, but we don't know yet whether that's better or worse than the Ram or the GM trucks. We also don't have numbers for the GM trucks' towing capacities. View 9 Photos As for fuel economy, the Ford F-150 manages a thoroughly impressive 22 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway with two-wheel drive. Choosing four-wheel drive drops those numbers to 20 and 25 respectively. The fuel economy numbers for the Ram, Chevy and GMC haven't been revealed yet, but for some comparison, we can look at the old Ram EcoDiesel. That truck's best fuel economy was 20 in the city and 27 on the highway with two-wheel drive.
