How Chevy used popular Instagram user to promote 2016 Volt
Thu, Feb 26 2015A picture is worth a thousand words. When it comes to Chevrolet and its Volt extended-range plug-in, the automaker is hoping pictures can be turned into a few more buyers. The company extended a little love to one popular social-media practitioner to see if the trick works. Former biochemical engineer Kevin Lu started his Instagram account a couple of years ago during a road trip, and the quality of his shots has attracted about 181,000 followers. With that popularity in mind, Chevy brought Lu up to Detroit to check out the unveiling of the next-generation Volt at the Detroit Auto Show last month. Lu also got to see the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly factory where the Volt is built, Automotive News reports. As for the next-gen Volt, Chevy says a more efficient powertrain and lighter battery help give the car an all-electric range of up to 50 miles and a total driving distance of more than 400 miles. Chevy also touts the model's streamlined grille and (tight) seating for three in the rear. General Motors hopes a combination of those improvements and exposure from sources such as Lu and his Instagram account (and some sleepy ads, apparently) revitalize sales of the model. Last year, Volt sales fell 19 percent to 18,805 units. Chevy to offer new Cruze as a hatchback in the US
Mon, Jun 22 2015Chevrolet plans to offer a five-door hatchback version of the new Cruze in the United States, according to the latest intel from Automotive News. In addition to the sedan form we're familiar with, the outgoing Cruze was offered as a hatchback in some markets overseas, but not in America – a decision which Mark Reuss, GM's EVP in charge of product development, characterized as "a pre-bankruptcy planning mistake." The new Chevy Cruze is set to debut later this week. Although the American automaker has yet to confirm which bodystyles will be offered where, AN reports that a five-door model was already shown to dealers at their national meeting in Las Vegas last week. AN points out that the Ford Focus with which the new Cruze will be contending is offered as both a sedan and hatchback in America, with the latter accounting for some 40 percent of sales.
Franchitti, Kanaan, and Dixon prank young IndyCar driver
Fri, May 22 2015The 20-year-old Sage Karam is a rising star in racing after scoring the 2013 Indy Lights Championship and taking ninth place in the 2014 Indianapolis 500. He's now competing for Chip Ganasi Racing, one of the top teams in the IndyCar Series, and counts this year's pole sitter Scott Dixon and former winner Tony Kanaan as teammates. Of course, being so young and a new member of the squad, some lighthearted hazing is to be expected. Dixon, Kanaan, and three-time Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti decided to play a little prank on Karam. While ostensibly detailing his Chevrolet Camaro, the three joking racecar drivers turned it into the Karamo. Check out the video above to see exactly what that means. After some scary crashes going into this year's event, it's refreshing to watch some cheery things happening at Indy.
