What You're Getting

Up for you bidding pleasure, I have a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro RS convertible.  This beauty was specially ordered from the factory with gray leather interior, power mirrors, a 5.0L V-8, an automatic transmission with overdrive, 16" aluminum wheels with wheel locks, air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, cruise control, a black convertible top, and "Pollo II Green Metallic" paint.  This car has been my baby for about 9 years, and I'm sad to see her go, but a number of factors are forcing my hand.  I bought this vehicle in 2004, and according to the dealer, am the second owner.  Incredibly, much of the original paperwork that came with the car including the original owner's manual, the original window sticker, the factory order sheet, delivery inspection certificate, and other bits of paperwork were included when I purchased the vehicle.  I even have the cassette tape that was originally included from Chevrolet that goes over "New Vehicle Features" on side 1, and "Radio Controls" on side 2!  She has over 234,000 miles on the original engine, which I'll admit, is a lot.  But honestly, the car runs so well that it's always been a source of pride to be able to tell someone the mileage.  The oil is changed regularly and she uses some, but no too much.  The body is in good shape with a few small dings.  She's been parked under cover (either under a carport for the first 3 years I had her, or in a garage since then) nearly every night I've owned her.  According to the previous owner (who I spoke to after I bought the car) she was in a minor fender-bender, causing minor damage to one of the quarter panels.  I've driven this vehicle up and down most of west coast, from Seattle WA, to Los Angles CA, and all the way out to the heart of Texas and to be completely honest, I'd feel comfortable jumping in and doing it again tomorrow.

Stuff I've Done

When I first bought the car, it still had the original AM/FM stereo with a cassette player.  I didn't even own a cassette, so I had a new (at that time) Pioneer CD player installed, with a 12-disc CD changer in the trunk.  HOWEVER, I still have the original Delco radio that came with the car and it will be included!  I also had a Viper car alarm with remote start installed around the same time (more on that below).  In the last year I've replaced the seat coverings with a gray vinyl material that looks like leather, but will last longer.  The top was replaced in 2011.  The original cloth top was showing its age, and the plastic rear window was pretty badly clouded over, so I had the top replaced with a vinyl top that, again, should last much longer.  I also replaced the heater core in 2011 and had a mechanic replace the radiator in 2011.  I've got a file stuffed with nearly every receipt for anything I've had done to the car, from oil changes to major repairs.

What Needs Attention

I've done my best to care of her, but she's not perfect.  The clear coat is failing on nose of the car, as well as on the outside mirrors.  The rest of the car has the scratches and nicks expected on a 20 year old paintjob.  The cruise control has never worked since I bought it, although the dealer swore it worked when he brought it onto his lot.  The air conditioner doesn't blow cold air anymore.  I had it recharged several years ago, but it didn't last.  I suspect there's a leak in the A/C somewhere, but living on the coast, haven't needed it, so haven't really worried about it.  The aluminum wheels have some scrape marks from getting to close to curbs.  The car came with a factory alarm that didn't work anymore when I purchased it, so I put in a fancy after-market Viper alarm with remote start.  Unfortunately, the alarm didn't take kindly to the coastal air after I moved away from the hot, dry Central California valley.  Neither the alarm or the remote start work anymore.  The carpet is original, and thus somewhat faded, but since it's gray anyway, it's not particularly noticeable.  The front tires are getting close to needing replacement, but the back tires still have plenty of tread.  The in-dash CD player has recently developed a habit of not ejecting CD's when the eject button is pushed, but with a 12-disc CD changer in the trunk, that hasn't been much of a problem.  And finally, the top leaks.  When I had the top replaced, the guy who installed it tore a piece of the weather-stripping where the top seals against the rear deck area behind the passenger-side door.  It was a minor tear at first, but putting the top up and down has made it worse. Although I park the car in the garage whenever I'm home, I can't avoid all of the rain showers, and when she's left outside, the floor behind the front passenger seat gets wet along with the floor of the trunk.

Final Conclusions

All in all, you'll be getting a great car. Although I've never entered her in a show, the previous owner did, and he apparently won several awards.  With a new coat of paint, and a few other details, I'm sure she could be an award winner again.  On more than one occasion I've left the car in a parking lot, only to come back and find someone's business card stuck under the windshield wiper with a note saying "If you ever wanna sell, call me!" but since I never really thought I'd sell this car, I never kept any of them.  Even now, she still turns heads!  The third generation Camaro body is beautiful and distinct and the convertible top makes this one something extra special and extra rare.  Add to that the 25th Anniversary package, and you've got a real collectable.  And believe me, there's nothing like driving down the coast, along a twisting mountain road, or cruising those long, straight stretches of California's Interstate 5 with the top down, the sun on your face, and the wind in your hair!  Don't let this beauty slip away!  :-)

First 2015 Chevy Corvette Z06 engine blows up at just 891 miles

Thu, Jan 1 2015

You've waited and watched and waited some more for the arrival of your 650-horsepower, $78,000 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Finally, that joyous day arrives and you eagerly, but gingerly, begin to break-in the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 monster under your hood. Then 900-odd miles after delivery, your excitement grinds, quite literally, to a halt. That's what the owner of one 2015 Z06 claimed happened to him when a simple break-in drive resulted in a lunched engine. The owner, known as Lawdogg149 on Corvette Forum, says he was out breaking-in his car ahead of a January track event when it happened. "While making a pull from 35 miles per hour, I accelerated and shifted short of redline, and boom - the car began knocking. I pulled over and popped the hood. I could hear a loud knock coming from the No. 6 cylinder area along with a serious, grinding, metal-on-metal sound coming from the supercharger area," Lawdogg wrote. A subsequent trip to the dealer confirmed his concerns, with the service facility telling Lawdogg that the No. 6 valvetrain had failed. The dealer couldn't research the issue further, though, as General Motors requested the engine be returned for a more thorough evaluation. The good news for the Z06's unlucky owner, at least, is that GM will be covering the engine replacement under warranty, an expense that Corvette Forum estimates is a nearly $24,000 procedure. At this point, the two leading theories behind the engine's detonation involve a manufacturing defect – which could be why GM is so keen to tear the blown powerplant down – or a mistake on the part of Lawdogg. As Motor Authority points out, such an error could be something as simple as the Z06's owner accidentally shifting to first rather than third during his 35-mph pull. If, however, there's a deeper manufacturing problem with the Z06's engine, this might not be the only case we end up hearing about.

Chevy Volt owners log half a billion electric miles, 2015 production starts

Thu, Jun 19 2014

As General Motors gets ready to start 2015 Volt production Monday, Chevrolet is looking back at some of the numbers that got the car to where it is today. The headline number is that Volt owners have collectively put more than a half-billion electric miles on their cars. The unsurprising upshot is that, if you went out and bought a Volt, you're pretty keen on getting as many electric miles out of it as possible. 90 percent of all Volt trips are done purely on electric power. The typical Volt driver goes 970 miles between fill-ups, GM says, and that means that 63 percent of all miles are done on battery power. General Motors executive director Larry Nitz gave AutoblogGreen a few more details on the usage habits of Volt drivers, including that 81 percent of commuting miles are electric. Two-thirds of US Volt drivers charge their vehicle 1.4 times a day, a clear indicator of drivers trying to maximize electric miles through opportunity charging. In fact, Nitz said, 90 percent of all Volt trips are done purely on electric power. GM also says that the Volt's official 35 miles of electric range is still doable for many owners who have had their car for more than 30 months. Looking ahead, we know that one upgrade for the 2015 Volt will be 4G LTE connectivity that can turn the car, like others in the GM family, into a mobile wifi hotspot. We're of course much more interested in when GM is finally going to start production of the next-gen Volt, but GM officials would only tell us that they're very excited about the still-secret vehicle, promising we'll be learning more "soon." Nitz did confirm that today's Volt drivers are most interested in three things from the next-gen model: more range, a lower price and a fifth seat. He did not say whether or not GM will be able to deliver on those requests. Chevrolet Volt Owners Surpass Half a Billion Electric Miles After 30 months of use, a sampling of Volts shows consistent all-electric range 2014-06-19 DETROIT – Since its launch in late 2010, Chevrolet Volt owners have accumulated more than half a billion all-electric miles. Additionally, based on a General Motors' study of more than 300 Volts in service in California for more than 30 months, many owners are exceeding the EPA-rated label of 35 miles of EV range per full charge, with about 15 percent surpassing 40 miles of range.
