The Chevrolet Volt was one of the most-anticipated cars when it began selling in limited markets in late 2010 as a 2011 model. It was one of the first plug-in hybrid electric cars on the road. GM calls it an extended-range electric. The 1.4-liter gas four-cylinder engine recharges the Volt's 16-killowatt hour, T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack - the same in your Mac or PC, just bigger. The Volt can go up to 40 miles on pure electric power before the gasoline engine kicks on. When it does it doesn't drive the wheels, instead it supplies power to the battery pack by powering a generator. The Volt uses premium fuel. The Volt is built on the same Delta global compact platform and 105.7-inch wheelbase as the Cruze The Range Bodystyle: Four-door hatchback Motor/Engine: 1.4L I-4, 16 kWh Li-Ion battery pack Transmission: Single reduction ratio Models: Volt What's New When the Volt debuted in 2011 it was one of the first plug-in-electric hybrid on the market and took home Motor Trend's Car of the Year Award. Not many major changes for its sophomore year, but the bow-tie brand had a few up its sleeve. Chevrolet made the navigation system and Bose audio system optional to lower the base price of the Volt in hopes to attract more customers. Passive keyless entry is now standard. It also gains new 17-inch wheels with interchangeable plastic inserts. Chevrolet's MyLink interface and a three-year subscription to OnStar turn-by-turn navigation are new. The 2011 Volt had limited availability, but GM expects it to be available nation-wide (and in Europe as the Opel Ampera) before the 2012 calendar year begins. Exterior The Volt dons a similar profile to the fastback Toyota Prius - which is more aerodynamic than traditional sedans. It features the familiar family front end with its crossbar split grille with gold bowtie. It is slightly smaller than the large for its class Chevy Cruze compact sedan. Daytime running lights, keyless entry, power heated mirrors, 17-inch aluminum wheels and rear spoiler are all standard. Blue Topaz Metallic and Summit White are new paint options for 2012. Cyber Gray Metallic has been dropped. Interior The instrument panel and center stack is now black with silver-colored, satin polished details including the outer rings of the climate-control dials, center stack vents, and audio control panel. Mazda said the silver accents on black background give the Mazda3 “a feeling of higher refinement” as well as making frequently used options easier to find. The Mazda3’s multi-function display and LCD display replace last year’s red text and graphics with white. The Mazda3 comes well-equipped with plenty of storage bins, two 12-volt outlets, rear heater ducts, power windows and locks, and 60/40 folding rear seat. Leather and navigation are optional. An optional blind-spot monitoring system is new for 2012. Performance & Handling The Volt can reach 60 mph from a standstill in 8.8 seconds on electric power or 8.7 seconds with the small gasoline engine putting it a full second faster than the Toyota Pruis. By the time it hits 64 mph (1.2 seconds later) the controller decreases power output slightly to preserve the battery. It can top out at 100 mph - above any legal speed in the country. The Volt matches a 2.4-liter Malibu Safety The Volt comes with many of GM's safety features standard and includes driver and passenger airbags. StabiliTrak electronic stability control, traction control, four wheel anti-lock disc brakes, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and daytime running lights are all standard. Rear parking assist with rearview camera are available. OnStar with automatic crash response, emergency services, crisis alert, stolen vehicle assist, remote door unlock, roadside assistance, remote horn and lights, turn-by-turn navigation, hands-free calling, vehicle diagnostics is standard for a limited time and owners can subscribe for as long as they own the Volt. Jay Leno drives Joe Rogan's '65 Chevy Corvette restomod
Tue, Sep 1 2015Restomod classics often look great rolling down the road, but they can be an absolute mess underneath. That's the problem comedian Joe Rogan discovered after purchasing his 1965 Corvette convertible that was already extensively modified. Once work began to improve it further, some serious issues were discovered. Now, Rogan's rejuvenated 'Vette has received a thorough update on the latest, extra-long edition of Jay Leno's Garage. Rogan's additional upgrades include a new interior and adding nacelles behind the seats. Power is up thanks to a supercharger for the LS1 V8. Now only do you get to hear the engine roar, but Leno and Rogan also take the convertible for a long ride in the Los Angeles hills. They reminisce about liking cars as kids, the current state of General Motors, and Rogan's work with the UFC. Leno also shares a funny story about a confusing discussion with Marlon Brando. With the beautiful 'Vette and the great conversation, there's a lot here to like. Related Video:
Chevy confirms 2016 Camaro will have wheels, brakes
Thu, Apr 9 2015Good news, everyone! Chevrolet has issued yet another round of teaser images and information about the sixth-generation Camaro, set to debut in Detroit on May 16. This time around, Chevy's teaser images confirm that the new car will not only have wheels and tires (Goodyear Eagle F1s, no less), but brakes as well. On top of that, we now know that the new Camaro will be 28-percent stiffer than the outgoing model. "The more rigid body structure allowed the engineers to more precisely calibrate the steering and suspension systems because they didn't have to compensate for chassis flex. The lighter structure also enabled the size and mass of elements such as the wheels, tires and brakes to be scaled accordingly," GM said in a press release, which you can read below. We've already learned that the new coupe will be 200 pounds lighter than its predecessor, has a bunch of unique parts, and according to GM's Mark Reuss, will outperform the Ford Mustang in every way. Now, it's only a matter of time before we see the sixth-gen Camaro, but surely not before Chevy issues even more teasers and information. Related Video: 2016 Camaro is Stronger, Lighter and More Responsive Computer aided engineering contributes to 28 percent greater structural stiffness DETROIT – The engineering team spent 9 million hours of computational time honing the driving experience of the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro before the first prototype turned a wheel. The structural modeling led to the Gen 6 Camaro being 28 percent stiffer than the current model. "The modeling abilities of computer aided engineering are advancing at incredible rates," said Jim Karlavage, Camaro program engineering manager. "Today, we can accurately model opportunities to add torsional strength without adding unnecessary mass. The result is a lighter, stiffer structure that benefits every aspect of the driving experience." The more rigid body structure allowed the engineers to more precisely calibrate the steering and suspension systems because they didn't have to compensate for chassis flex. The lighter structure also enabled the size and mass of elements such as the wheels, tires and brakes to be scaled accordingly. "The structural weight savings are compounded by opportunities to reduce un-sprung weight," said Karlavage.
2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid: 48 mpg for $28,645
Thu, Dec 10 2015With the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, General Motors wants to show it's as serious about mainstream hybrids as it is about mainstream midsize sedans. Keeping with the theme, Chevy announced the Malibu Hybrid will have a serious price tag of $28,645. Chevy said Thursday the 2016 Malibu Hybrid will go on sale in the spring, with that price also including an $875 destination charge. That's about $3,000 more than where the Ford Fusion Hybrid kicks off, and about $2,000 more than a Toyota Camry Hybrid LE. The big news being pushed with the Malibu Hybrid, however, is the fuel economy. GM says it's capable of 48 miles per gallon city and 45 highway, for a combined rating of 47 mpg. That's better than any other 2016 midsize hybrid sedan. Power comes from a 1.8-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor with a 1.5-kWh lithium-ion battery, producing 182 combined horsepower. That's competitive with both the Camry and Fusion. Chevy also likes to say it's roughly the same system as the one installed in the 2016 Volt – although with a smaller battery, larger gas engine, and without the plug – so the Malibu Hybrid has that halo effect going for it. With both this Malibu and 2016 Toyota Prius, there's a lot of activity around gas-electric hybrids amid lowering fuel prices and a raft of plug-ins and full-electrics. The gas-only 2016 Malibu was found to be, "at least good again," so the 2016 Malibu Hybrid should be able to attract those who want a competent midsize sedan with excellent fuel economy that awaits EPA verification. We'll go with that thought until we get to drive it. Related Video: NEXT-GEN CHEVROLET MALIBU HYBRID LT STARTS AT $28,645 Projected to offer 48 MPG city using technologies borrowed from Volt DETROIT – The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid LT, which achieves a General Motors'-estimated 48 mpg city, will be available this spring with a starting price of $28,645. "The Malibu leverages knowledge and technology directly from the second-generation Chevrolet Volt," said Steve Majoros, marketing director of Chevrolet Cars and Crossovers. "By leveraging technology, we are broadening our level of expertise and lessons learned to bring consumers a world-class hybrid." With an all-new, hybrid powertrain that uses a slightly modified drive unit and electric motors used in the 2016 Chevrolet Volt, the Malibu Hybrid offers a GM-estimated 48 mpg city, 45 mpg highway – and 47 mpg combined, unsurpassed in the midsize car segment. Official EPA estimates are pending.
