For law-enforcement missions where size really matters, Chevrolet offers its 2007 Tahoe Police - the first sport-ute designed from the outset with the needs of police personnel in mind.  Like its civilian counterpart, the Tahoe Police is thoroughly resigned for 2007, built on GM's new full-size SUV platform. Output of the standard 5.3-liter V-8 is bumped to 320 horsepower and torque climbs to 340 pound-feet. The V-8 features Active Fuel Management technology for improved fuel efficiency, and it's also designed to burn up to 85 percent ethanol (E85). Curiously, during the Michigan State Police's annual cop-vehicle testing program (see "Do You Feel Lucky, Punk?" feature), the E85-fueled Tahoe actually performed better than its gasoline-burning counterpart. As on the 2006 model, the engine mates to a four-speed automatic. For enhanced stability when running at high speeds, the Police Tahoe is lowered and boasts stiffer springs and shocks (the lowered chassis is protected with a skid plate package). Tires are H-rated 265/60R17 blackwall Goodyear RSAs on 17-inch steel wheels; tire-pressure monitoring is standard. Other enhancements for police work include a 26-gallon fuel tank, heavy-duty battery and 160-amp alternator, heavy-duty radiator and oil cooler, larger disc brakes (with ABS), fully integrated wiring (for easy installation of aftermarket lights, radios, sirens, etc.), and special "Dirty Harry" graphics (just kidding). Front and front-side airbags are standard, with roof-mounted head-curtain airbags optional. While prices vary widely (the Tahoe Police is a fleet vehicle typically sold at volume discount), the base package starts at just under $35,000.  On the test track, compared with the three most popular police sedans - the Chevy Impala, the Ford Crown Vic, and the new Dodge Charger - the rear-drive Tahoe Police held its own. 0 to 60 mph takes just 7.3 seconds, quicker than the Impala and Crown Vic (though well off the Hemi-powered Charger's 5.7-second time). The Tahoe Police runs the quarter-mile in 15.6 seconds at 88.5 mph, quicker than the Ford. The Tahoe Police scooted around our Figure Eight course in 28.4 seconds, behind the Impala and Charger but again edging out the aging Crown Vic. Incredibly, in our braking tests the Tahoe Police bested them all: Stops from 60 mph take just 126 feet, better even than the fat-tired Charger (127 feet). Like its civilian sibling, the Tahoe Police is a genuine pleasure to drive. Ride quality is controlled and fluid, steering effortless, power ample. That big cabin is also an exceptionally fine place to spend time in. Considering what a high priority law-enforcement personnel place on vehicle comfort (officers routinely log eight-hour shifts behind the wheel), the Tahoe Police should prove one of the most popular rides in any police department lucky enough to acquire one.

AWD turbodiesel Equinox, Terrain dropped for 2020

Thu, May 2 2019

Citing low demand, General Motors is dropping the AWD diesel options off the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain roster. Chevrolet spokesman Kevin Kelly confirmed to CarsDirect that for 2020, the diesel versions of these SUVs will only be offered with front-wheel-drive. CarsDirect notes that with the AWD diesel Equinox and Terrain gone, the only AWD diesel option in this class is the Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv diesel, which is significantly more expensive: As the AWD diesel CX-5 is only available in a fully loaded Signature specification, the $42,045 price tag is almost $10k heftier than the cheapest comparable Equinox, the AWD 1.6-liter diesel LT which starts from $32,495. The 2019 GMC Terrain AWD SLE costs $34,795 in comparison, which works out to being around $7,200 cheaper than the Mazda. The higher trim levels for the Equinox and Terrain are Premier and SLT, respectively. Some reasoning behind the AWD diesel GM SUV's low uptake is their own price difference to base FWD gasoline models: you can get a 1.5-liter Equinox for less than §25,000 listed. While the 2.2-liter Mazda has plenty more power at 168 hp and 290 lb-ft, compared to 137hp and 240 lb-ft in the 1.6-liter GM SUVs, the Equinox and Terrain are notably more frugal – they are rated 32mpg combined, while the Mazda can manage 28 mpg. With better fuel economy and a significantly lower list price, the General Motors twins are at least more wallet-friendly when it comes to numbers, and as the vehicles will cease to be built in that configuration there's likely to be some cash on the hood on ones in stock. Hurst Edition Trans Am proves the Screaming Chicken will rise from the ashes

Wed, 31 Oct 2012

It seems the Pontiac Trans Am steadfastly refuses to die. Ever since Chevrolet was granted a retrofied Camaro to compete with the Ford Mustang, Pontiac lovers have lamented the loss of this 1970s icon. And, looking at the Hurst Edition from Trans Am Depot, shown here at the 2012 SEMA Show, may explain what all the fuss is about.
It's not going to appeal to everyone's muscle-car tastes, but there's certainly room for a brash-and-bold black-and-gold Special Edition in many a Trans Am lover's garage. After all, if you want the keys to a custom pony car, you'll certainly get noticed in this one. If this scheme isn't your bag,, you can alternatively order your Hurst Edition in white and gold or silver and black. Oh, and don't forget a color-coordinated Screaming Chicken on the hood.
No matter which way you choose to go, your inner Burt Reynolds will appreciate the Eibach suspension kit, forged wheels with Pirelli PZero tires, functional shaker hood, fender air extractors, rear spoiler and, of course, a Hurst shifter inside. The interior is emblazoned with all manner of special touches, including a Hurst dash plate and T/A stitching on the Katzkin two-tone leather seats.

Chevy Volt gets customer satisfaction 'recall' for rear hatch issue *UPDATE*

Mon, Jan 26 2015

Last week, General Motors has issued a "Customer Satisfaction program" for some 2011-2015 model year Chevrolet Volts to fix the manual rear lift gate not working as appropriate. According to Volt owner posts on Facebook, the problem manifests itself by the hatch not opening up all the way (sometimes worse in the cold) with some people bumping their heads. Dealers will replace the lift gate struts as part of the program. Some drivers were notified through the vehicle's OnStar system that there is a problem. GM has not yet said how many Volts are affected. *UPDATE* This program is for all 2011-2015 model year Volts. Chevrolet spokesperson Michelle Malcho told AutoblogGreen that, "This is not a recall, so there won't be any formal information posted on the GM website." The fixes will be free to affected Volt owners. Some 2010-2015 Cadillac SRX vehicles are also affected by the same problem and will also be fixed.
