Hertz and GM team up to put 175,000 rental EVs on the road

Tue, Sep 20 2022

Hertz and General Motors have announced a significant partnership that will send up to 175,000 electric vehicles into rental fleets across the country. The deal will unfold over the next five years and include vehicles from all GM brands.   The partnership will run through 2027. Hertz estimates that the electric fleet can save as many as 8 billion gasoline-powered miles, removing 1.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions from the air. Hertz says it will invest in becoming the largest renter of EVs in North America and notes that it already has tens of thousands available at 500 locations in 38 states. By the end of 2024, it plans to electrify a quarter of its fleet. Electric rental cars are a great way for travelers wanting to avoid gas, and they make excellent urban commuter cars. Hertz will also likely save a few dollars by avoiding oil changes and other routine maintenance that gas engines need. However, a hidden societal benefit of this deal may come when Hertz’s EV rental customers begin shopping for new cars. Many people are skeptical of EVs for various reasons, including range, charging, ease of operation, and cost. Giving people a low-risk introduction to EVs and the ability to test-drive one without a pressuring salesperson could drive more people to electrics. At the same time, there's also the risk that renters wanting to take their Hertz-GM EV on a road trip into sparsely populated areas may return with charging and range-related horror stories. Hertz currently doesnÂ’t ask what youÂ’re planning to do with your rental, but it does offer a chat service for questions, and range information is presented clearly on each vehicle. GM Design shows what could have been and what might be

Thu, May 27 2021

We periodically like to check in with GM Design's Instagram account to see what they're cooking up. Even better is when we catch a glimpse of an alternate history of what legendary designers from The General's past were thinking, though those ideas may not have made it into production. This week, for example, the account posted some illustrations from George Camp, whose career at GM spanned nearly four decades, from 1963 to 2001. One of the renderings is of what appears to be a 1971-72 Pontiac GTO Judge, but with two headlights instead of the production unit's quad beams. The rear departs from the canonical version most dramatically, with a massive integrated wing. Other bits that didn't make the production cut include large side vents, a gill-like side marker and rectangular intakes below the headlights that wouldn't be out of place on a modern design today. Amazingly, from what we can make out of the date, it appears that the drawing was done sometime in 1965, which makes it quite prescient.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by GM Design (@generalmotorsdesign) There's also a very aerodynamic interpretation of a Corvette ZR-1. To our eyes it splits the difference between the 1986 Corvette Indy concept and a fourth-generation F-body Pontiac Firebird, so perhaps parts of Camp's work on this sketch did make it into physical form. There's also a radical sports car concept from May 1970 that resembles the Mazda RX-500 concept from the same year, a Syd Mead-looking Cadillac coupe, and an Oldsmobile with a cool take on the company's trademark waterfall grille and elements of the Colonnade Cutlass at the rear. Other recent posts include a FJ Cruiser-like off-road EV, a sleek coupe with the Chevy corporate grille, and a rendering of a Silverado-esque pickup that looks far better than the current production version.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by GM Design (@generalmotorsdesign) It's pretty easy to lose hours in the account, but it's always fascinating to see GM's visions of what could have been and what might be. Recharge Wrap-up: Tesla's Europe plans, Chevy Bolt details

Wed, Jan 20 2016

Hybrid Cars takes a close look at the battery cooling system and gearbox in the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt. While information is still limited, we can make educated guesses about the car's inner workings. The Bolt's liquid battery cooling system appears simpler than that of the Chevy Volt, eschewing active inter cell cooling plates for what appear to be bottom cooling plates. The Bolt has a coaxial gearbox, with the electric motor and the drive shaft on the same axis. It uses a simpler parallel-helical gear set rather than the planetary reduction set used in the Chevy Spark EV. These simplifications have the benefit of helping lower the cost of the Bolt. Read more at Hybrid Cars. Tesla is planning to expand its Supercharger network in Europe in 2016. While a handful of countries in western and central Europe have an established Supercharger network, many European countries still have no Tesla presence. That should change this year, as a map of planned locations includes Spain and Portugal, Ireland, Scandinavian and Italian expansions, and the first Superchargers in many eastern European nations, including Poland, the Balkans, Russia, Ukraine, Romania and even Moldova. By the end of the year, you should be able to take that electric road trip from Lisbon to Moscow you never knew you were planning. Read more at Teslarati. National Biodiesel Board CEO Joe Jobe sat down for an interview with the Tampa Bay Times. In the interview, Jobe discusses biodiesel's environmental impact and relationship with the fuel market. He talks about its production, and its differences from the other major biofuel, ethanol. Jobe says the biggest challenge is dealing with the petroleum industry, which biodiesel needs to work with despite their differences. "It's a threat when you have the largest, wealthiest most powerful industry in human history making it a top priority to eliminate policy that is aimed at helping incentivize renewable energy," says Jobe.
