How real is the Chevy Bolt EV and will it really cost $30,000?

"This is us bragging that we can do this kind of car." That's how Michael Simcoe, GM's executive director for NA exteriors, described the Chevy Bolt EV concept, which made a surprise appearance at the Detroit Auto Show today. While there was talk of a 2017 production debut, this is for sure a concept vehicle. But that means the ideas behind the vehicle are perhaps more important than the details. For example, no one is talking about what size battery might appear in a production Bolt, but Simcoe would talk about how rapid progress in battery improvements made it possible for GM to make the bold Bolt declaration that promises 200 miles and a price tag of around $30,000 (after incentives). But if the Bolt makes it to market, it won't be until 2017 (as rumored) or later, is it really fair to promote the car as being available with a federal tax credit? For one thing, credits for plug-in vehicles may change in the next few years, but if the laws stay the same, each manufacturer is limited to 200,000 vehicles before the credits start to decline. GM is justifiably proud that it's sold over 70,000 Volts thus far, but with a new model coming out later this year and a few years to go until the Bolt potentially arrives, GM could be pushing right up against that 200,000 limit when the Bolt goes on sale. But Volt executive chief engineer Pam Fletcher told AutoblogGreen that, "We're just trying to take some of the confusion out." "Think about talking to the average consumer," she said. "First, going through the explanation of how the federal tax credit was set up, how it's being used and so on. [In the industry, we] have the luxury of understanding the nuances of that regulation, but right now people who aren't in the marketplace, they don't have the luxury of all that. It's already hard to communicate the details so we gave them data in a way that is what they're used to seeing." There was one question that drove the two-year Bolt gestation and design period, Simcoe said: What does a better battery offer a vehicle designer? "We've got a number of spaces we play in for powertrain technology and obviously electrification is one of them," he said. "With Volt 1 and then the Spark EV, with that development and batteries getting better for us, we started doing some practical packaging to deliver a vehicle which was not the traditional aero form which you see around electric vehicles.

More than 5,500 people tried to get the 2016 Chevy COPO Camaro

It's stating the obvious, but the 2016 Chevy COPO Camaro is popular with enthusiasts. So much so, it's attracted more than 5,500 hand raisers, General Motors said Tuesday at an event to show off the company's new Performance and Racing Center in Pontiac, MI. Unfortunately for drag racing fans, Chevy will only sell 69 of them, as it has for the last four years. The COPO Camaro can be configured for the NHRA Stock and Super Stock classes. It comes with racing-tuned chassis pieces and a solid rear axle. Power choices include 5.7-, 6.2- and 7.0-liter V8 engines. About half of COPO Camaro owners race their cars, and the rest keep them as collectibles. Jim Campbell, GM vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, wouldn't say if the COPO is a profitable venture, but noted the fire-breathing dragster raises the image of Chevy and Camaro. "It makes sense for our business from a number of perspectives," he said. The first COPO Camaro, a Courtney Force-styled racecar that was revealed in November at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, hammered for $300,000 at the Barrett-Jackson auction last month. The proceeds went to the United Way. Campbell said low COPO production keeps interest high. Enthusiasts can also build their own COPOs by buying a rolling chassis and a crate motor, though those are not viewed by collectors in the same manner as GM factory-built creations. The COPO Camaro's V8 is one of several competition engines designed, built, and validated at the GM Performance and Racing Center. The Corvette C7R's 5.5-liter V8 and the Cadillac ATSV.R's 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 are two more. Chevy calibrates and conducts dynamometer testing on its 2.2-liter V6 for IndyCar and performs design work on its NASCAR V8 at the facility, which existed previously at another location in Michigan. Chevy Spark EV will go on sale in Maryland

The single-charge range of a Chevrolet Spark electric vehicle may not blow away anyone who's used to driving on a topped off tank of gas. But a full charge will actually get a Spark EV about halfway across the state of Maryland. Which is good because that state will be the first on the East Coast to sell the battery-electric model. General Motors said this week that Chevy Spark EV sales will start in Maryland this spring, and that federal and Maryland tax credits will get the out-of-pocket price of the Spark EV below the $18,000 threshold. GM took the opportunity to tout the Spark EV's 119 miles per gallon equivalent rating and says Maryland has sufficient charging infrastructure for drivers to welcome the EV without too much trouble. Last June, Spark EV distribution was reported to be ready to extend beyond the Pacific Coast. Specifically, Ohio was thought to be next in line to get Spark electric vehicles after four state car dealerships listed the model on their websites. GM's Randy Fox, however, quashed that real quick, saying only California and Oregon had sufficient infrastructure to support the Spark EV. GM first announced the Spark EV for public (or at least American) consumption back in 2011. Last year, the General sold 1,145 Spark EVs, up 87 percent from 2013.
