Introduced in 1970 as a "personal" coupe, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo was smooth, powerful and comfortable. Its most desirable version was the top-of-the line SS with a big 454 CID V8 engine that made it a screamer. The 2000 Monte Carlo SS we test this week is much tamer, however, but it does follow in its forefather's tire prints. OUTSIDE - Although the Monte Carlo shares its platform with the new Chevrolet Impala, no exterior panels are the same. Its silhouette is sleek and smooth, with sweeping character lines that run the length of its sides and break just around the door handles. The grille is a small slit across the front end, and the uniquely-shaped headlights wrap around into the fenders. Improvements to the chassis include strut-tower braces under the hood, one-piece body stampings and a stiffening superstructure behind the dashboard. INSIDE - There is plenty of room for four inside and five are only slightly squeezed. The front bucket seats are wide and soft, but could use more lumbar support. Lateral support could also be better. The center armrest for the back seat has a pair of handy built-in cupholders and the climb into the rear area is simple because the large doors open wide. The instrument panel is like a cockpit, glowing at night with lots of lighting and lots of buttons that operate the radio and climate controls. The multi-function controls on the steering wheel are easy to use. The ride is quiet inside, thanks to strategic placement ofacoustic insulation, and the windows are sealed so well that very little wind noise enters the interior. Standard features include an AM/FM/cassette stereo, climate control, power windows, door locks and outside mirrors, tilt steering, rear window defogger, power trunk opener, fog lamps and remote keyless entry. ON THE ROAD - The Monte Carlo LS is powered by a 180-horse, 3.4 liter V6, while the SS model uses a 3.8 liter V6 with 200 horsepower. Its 225 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm are enough to propel the SS to 60 MPH in just eight seconds which makes entering a crowded highway easy, and passing big-rigs on two-lane roads less worrisome. The engine is very basic in its design, eschewing high-tech overhead camshafts and multiple valves for traditional pushrods that operate two valves per cylinder. It is shared with many GM cars and vans, but the engine that would be welcome under the hood of the Monte Carlo is the supercharged version of the same engine, whose 240 horsepower can be found powering some other corporate siblings. In building the Monte Carlo SS, the company accomplished its mission in offering a smooth, comfortable cruiser that is low in price, but very high on value. A four-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is traction control to reduce wheelspin on slippery surfaces. BEHIND THE WHEEL - The new car is built on a shared platform and it's apparent that all that extra chassis bracing has worked. Its wide track allows for more stable handling and very little body roll, while the die-cast magnesium beam that runs under the dash virtually eliminates steering column shake and vibration. The car uses strut-type independent suspension front and rear, with coil springs and an anti-roll bar to keep it stable in cornering. This year a new aluminum engine cradle provides a solid foundation for the powertrain, front suspension, steering and front sheetmetal. Also, Chevy engineers stiffened many major structural components to improve the ride and reduce noise and vibration. The brakes are better now, with four-wheel discs replacing the disc/drum setup of the last generation model. An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is standard. SAFETY - Dual airbags, ABS, side-impact door beams, daytime running headlamps and a tire inflation monitoring system are all standard. OPTIONS - Leather upholstery: $625; Power sunroof: $700; CD player upgrade: $223; Preferred Equipment Group (heated mirrors, power driver's seat, auto-dimming mirrors, driver information center): $736; ALL THESE OPTIONS ARE ON THE VEHICLE! |

Weekly Recap: Revisting the BBC report that ended Jeremy Clarkson's Top Gear run
Sat, Mar 28 2015Jeremy Clarkson's long run as a Top Gear host has come to an end, and the reason is clear: His physical assault on one of the show's producers crossed a line, and the government-owned BBC couldn't tolerate it. The incident between Clarkson and Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon was initially described as a "fracas," and Clarkson was suspended. But his popularity and widespread support – even British Prime Minister David Cameron weighed in – suggested that the controversial Clarkson might be given yet another chance. The BBC put this to rest Wednesday when it sacked Clarkson and revealed the findings of its investigation. The report spelled out how Clarkson struck Tymon on the patio of a North Yorkshire (UK) hotel, leaving him with a bloodied, swollen lip. It was severe enough that the producer sought medical treatment. During and after the attack, Clarkson shouted expletives at Tymon and threatened to fire him. The noise carried into the hotel's dining room and even to a bedroom. Local police investigated the incident, but Tymon isn't pressing charges. The huge audience numbers, Clarkson's popularity and the high-octane excitement of Top Gear all melted away in the eyes of BBC director-general Tony Hall, who saw an attacker and a victim. "For me a line has been crossed," he said in a statement. "There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another dictated by either rank, or public relations and commercial considerations." In that moment, Clarkson was the bad guy, though he was actually the one who reported it to the network and made repeated attempts to apologize to Tymon. He's also urged the media to leave the producer alone. Hall voiced regret in the statement that announced Clarkson's contract would not be renewed, but the BBC decided to move on. Rumors are swirling about possible replacements for Clarkson. The network says it wants to continue Top Gear in 2016 and is looking to air the rest of this season's episodes. Despite the controversy, the show has a global audience of 350 million viewers and is one of the BBC's most valuable properties. It's unclear what Clarkson's co-hosts, James May and Richard Hammond, will do, as their contracts were also reportedly up to be renewed. 2020 Ford Escape hybrids vs other crossover fuel sippers: How they compare on paper
Wed, Apr 3 2019Along with a new generation of Escape, Ford also reintroduced the world to the 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid. And if that weren't enough, Ford is adding a plug-in hybrid version. This is a sign of the times: people are more crossover crazy than ever, but are also seeking ways to use less fuel, whether it's for environmental or purely money-motivated reasons. The Ford hybrids aren't the only fuel-efficient compact crossovers on the market. They will be going head-to-head with conventional hybrids including the 2019 Kia Niro, 2019 Nissan Rogue Hybrid and 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. There are other plug-in hybrids including the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek PHEV, 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the plug-in version of the 2019 Kia Niro. There are even a couple diesels in the form of the 2019 Chevy Equinox and 2019 GMC Terrain. So we've rounded up the details on all these crossovers to see who leads and lags in criteria such as power, fuel efficiency, space and price. Check out all their details below. 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid View 68 Photos How do their engines and fuel economy compare? Conventional Hybrids and Diesels Let's face it, if you're buying one of these crossovers, one of the things that matters most to you is just how frugal with fuel they are. We'll start off with the conventional hybrids and diesels, and the clear victor is the Kia Niro, which in base FE trim, manages to hit 50 mpg combined. This is thanks to it sharing its powertrain with the Hyundai Ioniq, the Hyundai equivalent of the Toyota Prius. Buyers should take note that only the FE returns such high fuel economy. The LX and EX drop to 49 mpg, and the S Touring and Touring get 43. Even then, the least efficient Niro is the most efficient of the normal hybrids and diesels. It is nearly the least powerful, though, with 139 horsepower. Just behind it is the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. It delivers 40 mpg combined, and it has an ace up its sleeve: it comes standard with all-wheel drive. Every other vehicle in this powertrain group has front drive standard, and the Niro isn't available with all-wheel drive at all. If that weren't enough, the RAV4 Hybrid also boasts the most power at 219 horses. While we can't say anything about Escape Hybrid fuel economy, we do know that it will make 198 horsepower, which is close to the class-leading RAV4. The least powerful of these is the Equinox and Terrain, and they return the worst fuel economy at 32 mpg.
Nissan Leaf has 2nd-best sales month ever, Chevy Volt does a 2013 repeat [UPDATE]
Tue, Apr 1 2014UPDATE: The official press release says that "Volt [sales were] up 7 percent," but Randy Fox let AutoblogGreen know that this is simply due to a change in the fleet/retail mix between March 2013 and 2014. The actual number sold was exactly the same in the two months. A month ago, Nissan's director of EV sales and marketing, Toby Perry, said he expected to see the Leaf's sales momentum continue into March. It wasn't a big leap, since January and February were slow sales months in 2013 (around 640 each) before a big climb to 2,200 in March. In 2014, the first two months of the year were better (around 1,300 each) but Nissan can still be happy that the Leaf just had the best March ever and its second-highest sales month ever, with 2,507 sold. That's a 12.1 percent increase from 2013 and Perry said in a statement to AutoblogGreen that one reason is all of the buyers who are becoming evangelists for the vehicle. "We've also seen an increase in showroom traffic as we enhanced our marketing presence in March," he said. Nissan pointed to cities like Washington, DC, Raleigh-Durham, NC and urban areas in Texas as strong Leaf markets last month. On the Chevy Volt front, January and February were also slow months in 2014, down roughly half from the 2,000-ish the plug-in hybrid was selling at the end of 2013. For 2014, sales were up slightly from the first two months of the year and Chevy spokesman Randy Fox told AutoblogGreen that the March number was "pretty flat, year-over-year." Even with that warning, we were surprised to see the total come in at 1,478. Why's that? Because the total for March 2013 was ... 1,478. So, yeah, that's pretty steady even if there were 26 selling days in March period this year compared to 27 last year. As always, our more complete report of last month's green car sales will be coming soon. News Source: General Motors, Nissan Green Chevrolet GM Nissan Electric Hybrid PHEV ev sales
