2016 Chevrolet Volt Beauty-Roll
Thu, Nov 12 2015For those of you paying attention, we've really ramped up the old Autoblog video game these days. Our new series Car Club USA joins Translogic and The List, and there are more Daily Drivers and Short Cuts than ever. But sometimes, all you care about is the car. The Autoblog Beauty-Roll video series has one goal: bring you glossy video images of cars, and nothing but. We're collecting moving pictures of all the cars we test, inside and out. Each episode comes with a hit of engine sound – start-up and with a few revs – to round out the package. Set your resolution to max, kick it into full-screen, turn up the sound, and enjoy today's subject, the 2016 Chevrolet Volt. Oh, and if you'd like more Beauty-Roll, click here to see the back catalog.
Jay Leno joins the dark side with Darth Vader's car
Mon, Dec 14 2015There still isn't a better Star Wars villain than Darth Vader. The Sith Lord defines menacing with his black suit, deep voice, and a penchant for choking underlings. Maybe The Force Awakens can introduce a better bad guy when the film hits theaters in the coming days, but Vader remains king until then. Jay Leno now shows some respect for the dark side of the force by welcoming Darth's car into his garage. This isn't just the tiny Hot Wheels toy, but the fully drivable version that premiered last year at San Diego Comic-Con. The car's design clearly evokes Vader's iconic helmet, but it still looks like a mean hot rod. Designer Bryan Benedict also shows Leno a few other Star Wars touches in the styling, like the light saber side pipes and Imperial logos on the wheels. One of the coolest features is that the roof rises out of the way to let in passengers, which is a small nod to a scene from The Empire Strikes Back. Underneath the Vader-inspired shape, the car uses a heavily modified C6 Chevrolet Corvette platform, and Jay gets to take it for a short drive. Leno even leans into the dark side with some maniacal laughter while behind the wheel. Related Video:
The U-2 spy plane needs high-performance cars to help land
Thu, Oct 15 2015Typically, aircraft deploy their landing gear from three main points. Most military aircraft, for example, deploy two gears at the back and one forward, like a tricycle. Some civilian aircraft flip the layout, with two in front and one in back - tail-draggers. The U-2 Dragon Lady is wildly different than any of these. With a 103-foot wingspan but a body that's just 63-feet long, the layout of the U-2 makes a traditional landing setup infeasible. Instead, the U-2 utilizes a pair of wheels, one up front and one in back. With such a bizarre layout, landings are so tough that since the U-2's earliest flights at Area 51, the US Air Force has used high-performance chase cars to guide the pilot down safely. The landing process isn't over there, though. As this video from Sploid shows, balancing out the aircraft to fit the detachable "pogos" – think training wheels for spy planes – is a comical procedure requiring a number of airman using their full body weight to even out the U-2. This video also recaps some of the great vehicles that have served as chase vehicles for this legendary spy plane. They include Chevrolet El Caminos, and the Fox-body Ford Mustangs so favored by the California Highway Patrol. For the last several years, the USAF has utilized products from General Motors, using fourth-generation Chevy Camaros, before switching over to the Pontiac GTO and most recently, the awesome Pontiac G8. It's fair to say that if you're a gearhead in the Air Force, this is the job you want. Check out the video, embedded up top.
