                                                                        1962 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible.
After 25 years trying to buy this car from the 2nd owner, I finally acquired it from his estate. He passed 4 years ago at 89 and since his father lived to be 104, I thought I would never get it. I am 66 years old now and much to my regret circumstances dictate she has to go. He and his father ran a local repair shop since the 1930's until the late 1980's. He bought this car from one of his customers in 1970. Most of the 92877 actual miles was accumulated by the 1st owner. As it was no longer a daily driver, The 2nd owner did some minor lower rust repair and painted both sides from the chrome down and then rarely drove it only in parades and later to an occasional car show. It has held up well but the lacquer paint has the typical cracks and is showing its age. The right front floor support has been replaced and the left one should be. The rest of the paint above the chrome is original and still looks and shines nice but there are some small nicks and scratches. There is a small ding on top of the left front fender. The car has never been in an accident.

The interior is all original and is in extremely nice condition except for a patch on the right door panel. Carpet is very nice but faded. Easy to spray dye rather than replace. I'm not sure but the top may be original. It is not real white like a new one but still looks nice with no torn seams or tears and it is not brittle. The back window has some scratches and is showing its age but you can see clearly through it. All original weatherstripping is still soft and pliable is in excellent condition.

The original 283 engine is whisper quiet. No knocks, ticks, smoke or leaks. It has 327 valve covers and fender flags and the originals go with the car. I think the 327 valve covers and fender flags are prettier than the 283's. The battery is out in the pictures, but it comes with a good working one. The original transmission shifts great, no slippage. The original rear end is quiet, not sure if it's a 3.08 or 3.36. Correct dual exhaust was added with correct reproduction clamps and hangers and stock quiet mufflers. The car runs, rides and drives smooth and quiet with no shake, shimmy, wobble or wandering.  Front suspension is tight and the tires are balanced. All lights inside and out work as does all equipment and accessories. Dual outside rear view mirrors and dual antennas. Wheels tires and hubcaps are very nice. Bumpers are original and straight and still shine good. All glass is in excellent condition and roll up and down as they should. All the anodized trim is in very good shiny condition.

This is not a RESTORED car. It is a SURVIVOR that has always been taken care of and maintained as needed. You don't need a trailer to take this car home. It can be driven any distance with confidence. I can put you in touch with a local shipper if needed.

I may stop this auction at any time as the car is for sale locally. Many cars on ebay never meet reserve, but if you are serious, don't be shy with an offer.

GM exploring ways to raise half-ton Duramax diesel tow rating

Sun, Nov 3 2019

Lots of truck owners cheered when GM announced fuel economy numbers for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado with the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel inline-six. Even after Ram let loose its EPA mileage ratings for the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, the Chevy oil-burner still took the trophy. The victory was years in the making, GM engineers spending an entire four-year development cycle refining the LM2 Duramax to increase mileage. The tradeoff, as well all know by now, is towing; the Duramax in half-ton duty pulls a maximum 9,300 pounds in the Silverado. Rivals across town can do more, the Ford F-150 PowerStroke rated at 11,500, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel game to pull 12,560. GM engineer John Barta told Muscle Cars & Trucks that more hauling chops could be on the way, explaining, "We’re actually looking at upgrading some of the materials around (the engine bay) to see if we can maybe raise our tow rating." Engine bay materials are at issue due to thermal complexities underhood. John Barta, GM's assistant chief engineer of diesel engine controls, said the Duramax's inline-six configuration allowed engineers to get emissions hardware like the combined selective catalytic reduction, diesel oxidation catalysts, and diesel particulate filter unit closer to the engine, where it heats up quicker, getting emissions down quicker. But that filter puts another heat source in those confines, enforcing a cap on the tow rating to keep the engine and other systems from overheating. "If you look under the hood," he said, "youÂ’ll see a significant amount of silver ‘moon tapeÂ’ around to make sure things arenÂ’t getting overheatedÂ… if we were to go up in higher towing, which we can, we start impacting the possibility of deteriorating some of the components.” There isn't much space for more grille, so swapping for a better grade of "moon tape" or a different kind of material could reduce engine bay heat, extracting a higher tow rating in the process.  It's important to note a point Barta's been making for months about the Duramax figures, though. "Even though itÂ’s nice to brag about big numbers, in reality, light duty customers are not towing that large with their trucks," and, "We do know that (95 percent) of our light duty customers donÂ’t tow over 9,000 pounds." On our First Drive of the 2020 Silverado diesel we called out the tow rating, but emphasized that the Chevy and GMC have more important challenges to overcome.

Corvette + fireworks = so much glory

Fri, Jul 3 2015

You might think that those of us making our living by reviewing cars, think critically about the cars we're driving most of the time. It could be that I'm an underachiever, but that's not the case with me. In fact, unless I'm set to the review task, I typically think about the cars in front of and around me more frequently. That's because a) you never know what you're going to see out there, and b) all of them could be out to bump/scratch/tailgate/crash me out. You can never be too careful. Such was the case when I was driving a 2015 Chevy Corvette earlier this week. I'd already had my fun finding the edges of grip on a river road in the car, the night before; on the morning in question I was just trying to get to work. But while scanning the suburban streets for potential dangers to the 'Vette's neat-o Daytona Sunrise orange paint, I spied a XXL-sized fireworks tent in an empty parking lot. Oh right, I remembered, 4th of July weekend. That obvious bit of observation lead to a chain of thought along these lines: "We should do something with this car for the 4th" ... "Too bad I have to give it back tomorrow." ... "Wonder if I could do a quick video?" ... "Wonder if I can set off a bunch of fireworks in slow-mo for a video?" The result, well, I won't call it genius, but I will say that I remember why every kid loves fireworks. And I will call it glorious. Happy 4th, y'all.

Hillary Clinton takes to campaign trail in a van called Scooby

Wed, Apr 15 2015

It still seems way too early to even starting thinking about the 2016 presidential election, but candidates are already throwing their hats in the ring. Among the officially announced hopefuls so far is former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. To kick off her run for office, she recently embarked on a long-distance road trip from her home in New York to the campaign battleground of Iowa. Rather than a limo, she was driven there in a conversion van (pictured above) that Clinton named Scooby after Hanna-Barbera's famous, mystery-solving dog. According to Yahoo Autos, the vehicle itself is a Chevrolet Express that has been customized by the Explorer Van Company, and Time says that it's also armored. Clinton isn't behind the wheel, though. All those years in public office mean that the Secret Service does the driving. Of course, the vehicle in Scooby Doo was named the Mystery Machine, and Scooby was mostly brown, not black. To explain the somewhat odd naming, Clinton traveled around in a brown van during her 2000 Senate campaign in New York, and it earned the nickname Scooby, according to Time. Apparently, the moniker has stuck for her latest ride. If the start of the Clinton campaign seems early, she isn't the first White House hopeful to arrive in Iowa this year. A bunch of possible Republican candidates already met at summits in the state at least twice to gain favor ahead of the caucus there. No word on what they were driving...
