Rumor: 2016 Chevy Volt gets 53 miles EV range, 40% increase
Mon, Aug 3 2015While we're still waiting for the official word from GM, news is creeping around the Internet that the 2016 Chevy Volt will get a big boost in all-electric range and gas-burning efficiency. According to new rumors out today, the second-gen Volt will be able to go 53 miles on a full charge, have 106 MPGe and be able to get 42 miles per gallon on the official EPA numbers. Compared to the outgoing first-gen Volt (38 miles EV range, 98 MPGe, and 37 mpg) these are all impressive increases. The all-electric range boost of almost 40 percent is the biggest surprise, though. We knew the new Volt would get better numbers than the first-gen model, but when GM debuted the car in Detroit earlier this year, it said it suspected the Volt would get a 50-mile range, 41 mpg and 102 MPGe. We'll be keeping an eye out for official confirmation of all these new numbers. Volt drivers are already making most of their driving miles electric. The number sits at about 80 percent currently, and GM has said it expects this to climb to 90 percent in the new model. GM said in May that the 2016 Volt will start at $33,995, a bit lower than the current Volt's MSRP of $34,170 before any tax breaks. So, for less money you'll be getting much better fuel economy. What's not to like about that? Preorders are already open for interested buyers in some parts of the country. NHTSA investigates 1.7 million GM SUVs for windshield wiper failures
Tue, Nov 6 2018WASHINGTON - The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Tuesday it is investigating whether General Motors should recall an additional 1.7 million sport utility vehicles due to an issue with windshield wiper failures. GM in August 2016 recalled 367,800 2013 GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox SUVs in the United States to address the problem. But after receiving 249 complaints about similar problems, the federal agency said it is probing whether the recall should be expanded to include an additional 1.7 million vehicles from the 2010-2016 model years. The automaker said it is cooperating with the NHTSA review. GM said it recalled the 2013 GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox SUVs "because warranty data showed a higher-than-expected failure rate," adding it has continued to monitor field data on other model years of those vehicles. GM noted that no crashes or injuries related to the issue have been reported. The Detroit-based automaker said the recalls were prompted after a GM Canada brand quality manager reported a potential safety issue relating to reports of windshield wiper failures in Canada through GM's "Speak Up For Safety," program in late 2015. The data showed significantly higher field incidents in parts of Canada, which prompted a June 2016 recall there. Over the next two months, a higher number of U.S. reports prompted a U.S. recall, the company added. In the 2016 recall, GM said the front-wiper module would be replaced with a module that has a water deflector and, if needed, dealers would fill the water management hole and drill a new small hole in a different location.(Reporting by David Shepardson, editing by G Crosse)Related Video: Government/Legal Recalls Chevrolet GM GMC SUV
GM Canada recalls 159,240 GMC and Chevy trucks for faulty defroster circuit
Fri, Jul 12 2019General Motors is recalling more than 159,000 2014-2019 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks in Canada due to a potential fire risk. GM says the rear defroster circuit could overheat on trucks optioned with the power-sliding rear window. Thus far, there is no word on the recall's relation to U.S. vehicles. The recall, found by Automotive News, was posted to Transport Canada on June 28, 2019 with manufacturer recall No. N192220470. Included in the 159,240 vehicles are the 2014-2018 Silverado 1500, the 2015-2019 Silverado HD, the 2014-2018 Silverado LD, the 2014-2018 Sierra 1500, the 2015-2019 Sierra HD, and the 2014-2018 Sierra LD. The notice says the rear defroster circuit, specifically on trucks with the power-sliding rear window, could overheat. Because of its placement, this excess heat could cause melting, smoking, or possibly fire, in the worst case scenario. As of now, there is no official word when GM will initiate the recall and there is no official fix detailed just yet. GM suggests that owners, who will be notified by mail if their vehicles are affected, take their trucks to a dealer to remove the rear window defroster fuse as a stop-gap. Automotive News contacted GM to find out if the problem is also found in trucks sold in the United States, but no definitive statement was made, as the investigation is reportedly ongoing. We will update this space if American vehicles are found to be included in the problem.
