Personal testimonies show real-world effect of plugging in with Chevy Volt
Mon, Jan 13 2014At this point, there are tens of thousands of individual stories about what it's like to live with a Chevrolet Volt. But it also remains informative to take a look at one of these in depth. For example, one Atlanta-area Volt owner says he's cut his cents-per-mile ownership costs by almost 40 percent compared to his previous car primarily because of his ability to drive almost all the time on electric power. Jeffrey Cohen told Clean Technica that he put about 14,000 miles on his Volt extended-range plug-in hybrid for the year that ended October 2013, and that more than 92 percent of those were on electrons. He estimates his "lifetime" miles per gallon rating at a whopping 384 mpg, a figure pushed upward by the fact that he installed a Level 2 charger at home while his employer added an external 110-volt charger at work. Cohen is spending 45 cents a mile for his car, compared to 73 cents in his Infiniti M35. As a result, he's spending 45 cents a mile for his car, compared to 73 cents a mile with his prior vehicle, an Infiniti M35. About two-thirds of those Volt costs are for the $349-a-month lease payments, while 15 percent is insurance, 11 percent is for the charger and seven percent for the gas and electricity that actually powers the car. Helping lower that last figure is an overnight electricity rate that's about 10 percent of Cohen's daytime rate. Chevy parent General Motors hopes such testimonies will re-trigger sales for the Volt in 2014. Last year, GM sold 23,094 Volts, down 1.6 percent from 2012. We expect our readers have similar stories they'd like to share in the Comments. 10 electric cars we’re excited are coming soon
Thu, Sep 22 2022If you were considering buying an electric vehicle a couple years ago, we wouldn't fault you for thinking your options were limited, both in terms of quantity and quality. You just might not have been able to find an electric car that would suit your needs, lifestyle or budget. With the newest generation of EVs that have launched in the past year or two, your options have changed — and improved — dramatically. If you still don't see an EV you like, just wait a little while longer. It won't take long. There are a whole lot more on the horizon, and the problem may soon be in narrowing down your options. To give you an example, here are 10 electric vehicles we're excited about that you'll be able to buy very soon, from GM, from Germany, from Japan and more. Some of these will be available by the end of the year, and all are expected to launch by the end of 2023. The Chevy trio: 2024 Blazer EV, Equinox EV and Silverado EV GM is stepping into the future with strong footing. Following high-end electric launches from GMC (Hummer EV) and Cadillac (Lyriq), Chevrolet is bringing three electric vehicles with familiar nameplates. The 2024 Chevy Blazer EV (above left) will offer a number of versions, starting with the 2LT and RS trims in the summer of 2023, followed by the 557-horsepower SS in the fall and the base 1LT in early 2024. The 2024 Chevy Equinox EV (above right) will go on sale in fall 2023 as a limited-edition model, with volume sales ramping up in 2024, with a base cost of “around $30,000.” For those who prefer a bed to a liftgate, the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV is an electric pickup that looks more like the old Chevy Avalanche than the current Silverado. The WT (work truck) trim launches in fall 2023, while the 664-horsepower RST will follow in 2024. Chevy Bolt to start at $37,500 before rebates
Thu, Jan 7 2016During the recent debut at the Consumer Electronics Show, Chevrolet only described the 2017 Bolt's cost as "affordable" without any further explanation. Now the company's promo site for the EV spilled the beans of the $37,500 price after destination. That means some buyers could get the five-door hatch for $30,000 after the $7,500 federal tax credit – at least as long as that lasts for the Bowtie brand. State incentives might also reduce the bill even more when the Bolt arrives in late 2016. Chevy wants the Bolt to be a mainstream and affordable vehicle that can attract a wide swath of buyers. The company estimates the five-door's range at over 200 miles, which should be plenty for most customers. The promo site also touts that the batteries can recharge in nine hours from the automaker's 240-volt home charger. Inside, buyers find a high-tech cabin with a customizable 10.2-inch infotainment screen and an 8-inch instrument display. To limit range anxiety, the vehicle's computers can take into account the way an owner drives, the weather, terrain, and more to calculate just how much distance remains from the batteries. The system also pushes people to be greener drivers through a game-like interface that offers rewards and rankings. If $37,500 or less for this five-door EV intrigues you, read our Quick Spin of a preproduction example from CES for a better idea of what the Bolt is really like. The powertrain's regenerative braking impressed us even over the short driving course, and the infotainment system seemed incredibly useful. Related Video:
