Fully restored and enhanced 1981 El Camino. We purchased the El Camino from a family
friend, who put about 140k miles on it.
It was in good general operating condition and had not been in any
accidents. Here’s a list of the repairs
and improvements. ·
Engine o
Swapped engines – it came with a small V-6. We installed a crate GM 350 cu-in engine
designed to produce 300 hp. The crate
engine was new, and has less than 100 mi.
It came with heads installed. We
added the intake manifold, carburetor, flywheel, water pump, fuel pump and
alternator. o
Exhaust system is all new with headers and
custom dual exhaust. o
Cooling system – completely replaced to
accommodate the larger engine. The fan
cowling is an area for improvement as it does not fit well. We planned to change to electric fans to
eliminate the cowling and bought a fan, but never installed it. ·
Transmission o
Had the original transmission completely rebuilt ·
Differential and drive shaft o
All original parts ·
Air conditioner o
New system with a modern compressor ·
Front end o
Replace the coil springs to handle the added
weight of the engine. o
Cut down the front springs to lower the front
end a bit to give a slight nose-down angle, just enough to give a muscle car
look. ·
Shock absorbers o
Replaced all four shocks ·
Wheels and tires o
Put on wider five spoke wheels and new
tires. The original tires were typical
early 80s narrow tires. We saved the
original wheels. ·
Body o
The body work was done by Bob Haynes at Custom
Coach works. We stayed close to the
original color, which was a bronze.
Custom Coach used a metal flake paint that really makes the paint a lot
brighter than the original. o
Only one serious rust spot was found. It was the floorboard on the passenger side
that was over the catalytic converter. A
replacement panel was installed. o
Trim was kept all original. o
Seals were replaced around both doors and
windows. The seals are still a bit
stiff, making the doors a bit difficult to close. o
The bed was covered in a spray-on bed liner that
was colored a light brown to complement the body. The bed had small dents showing its many
years of service, which posed a problem to get them all smoothed out for
painting. The bed liner was a great
solution that looks quite good. ·
Interior o
Upholstery was completely replaced, the looking
being the same as the original. It has a
bench seat. o
Door panels got new coverings. o
The curtain that covers the spare tire compartment
was replaced. o
New carpet was installed. o
A dashboard cover was installed since the
original has split and become brittle. o
The glove box still needs some work; the cables that hold it in the open position
broke and we have not replaced them. o
New stereo and custom speaker setup. o Unfortunately the gear indicator and analog clock have not worked since being purchased.
We spent a long time building up this car, and it was a great bonding experience for the family. This things roars with the new 350 and dual exhaust, and makes a wonderful deep rumble at idle. It will break the back tires loose, not a problem for 300+ hp on that light El Camino truck bed. We are moving on to bigger and better projects, and will sell this car to the best offer. Don't be afraid to make an offer!

Regular-cab, short-bed Chevy Silverado Trail Boss pickup looks great
Fri, Jul 30 2021For all the wild popularity of full-size pickups, there's one configuration that U.S. buyers are no longer offered: the regular-cab, short-bed truck. Interestingly, however, GM still does make this configuration, and both the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra are offered with it — in the Mexican market. That body style, however, is available solely in ultra-basic work-truck form. But a custom wheel shop, JC Wheels in the Mexican city of Culiacan, has converted one of these Silverados to Trail Boss trim, and we're digging the result. The sporty shorty Silverado Trail Boss comes to our attention via GM Authority, after the shop posted it on their Instagram feed. The shop added a 3-inch lift, assist steps, Chevy alloy wheels, a Trail Boss front fascia including red tow hooks, and Trail Boss badging. They also added dark window tint, which seems like a good idea in sunny Mexico. In the U.S., the Silverado Trail Boss isn't offered at all in regular-cab form; it only can be had as a double cab or a crew cab, the latter with a choice of a short bed or standard bed. But size is often a hindrance for trucks that actually get driven on trails, where this regular-cab, short-bed variant's smaller wheelbase would be an advantage. Beyond that, the Trail Boss upgrades keep this configuration from looking like a basic-spec machine. That's even more true of the same outfit's previous efforts: the conversion of the GMC Sierra regular-cab, short-bed pickup into a Denali. With so many buyers choosing pickups as personal-use vehicles, it's not hard to think that this configuration could find an audience here. But the key would be to do as this Mexican firm has done and offer it in the desirable off-road and luxury trims, rather than as a basic work truck. Would you buy one? Sound off in the comments below. The next step would be to use this configuration as the basis of a full-size, two-door SUV, in the mold of the classic Chevy K5 Blazer and GMC Jimmy.
GM reports third straight sales drop in China in 2020
Wed, Jan 6 2021BEIJING — General Motors' vehicle sales in China fell 6.2% in 2020, as the U.S. automaker suffered a prolonged slowdown in the world's biggest auto market. GM, China's second biggest foreign automaker, delivered 2.9 million vehicles in the country last year, the company said on Wednesday, for a third straight decline in annual sales. But sales have been recovering in the second half of last year, up 12% between July and September and 14% in the final three months. GM has a Shanghai-based joint venture with SAIC Motor, in which the Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicle brands are made. It also has another Liuzhou-based venture, with SAIC and Guangxi Automobile Group, in which they make no-frills minivans and have started to make higher-end cars. Sales of its Buick brand grew 4% on the year and Wuling rose 9%, the statement said. Luxury brand Cadillac's sales increased 8%. Sales of GM's more affordable Baojun brand dropped 33% last year, while sales of its mass-market Chevrolet tumbled 30%. GM's delivery of 2.9 million vehicles in China follows 3.09 million vehicles in 2019, 3.65 million vehicles in 2018, and 4.04 million in 2017, for a three-year decrease of 28%.
Camo'd Chevy Camaro ZL1 is one bad boy
Tue, Sep 15 2015Thanks to a fresh gallery of spy shots, we're getting a much better look at the next Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 during its development, and this machine is looking seriously mean. Unlike the last photos, the heavy cladding is gone from the body this time and is replaced by a camouflage wrap. That switch makes checking out the details a whole lot easier. The first thing you'll notice at the front is the massive grille that looks ready to devour anything that gets in the way. To add a little more menace, the lower air dam appears to jut out a bit more, as well. While harder to see in these latest shots, our spies say the hood still boasts an extractor similar to what's found on the Cadillac CTS-V. The big, double spoke wheels look great in black and really dominate the styling in profile. Look past them, and you notice some tweaked side sills, as well. At the very back, you can also spot some styling adjustments to the rear bumper. There's an unmissable wing back there, too. The powerplant for the ZL1 is still a mystery, but it's rumored to use the LT4 6.2-liter supercharged V8. The similar hood design as the CTS-V is one piece of evidence to support that. Even with the same engine, Chevy's engineers could tweak the output higher or lower than the Caddy. The wait to find out isn't too long because the ZL1 is anticipated to launch for the 2017 model year. Related Video:
