General Motors Recalls Nearly 780,000 Cars To Fix Deadly Problem

General Motors is recalling nearly 780,000 compact cars in North America because the engines can shut down unexpectedly and cause crashes. The company says six people have been killed in crashes related to the problem. The recall affects Chevrolet Cobalts and Pontiac G5s from the 2005 through 2007 model years. U.S. safety regulators say the weight of the key ring and rough roads can move the ignition switch out of the run position, cutting the engine and electricity. If that happens, air bags may not work. GM says there have been 22 crashes from the problem. All happened at high speeds. Dealers will replace the ignition switch for free. GM says owners should remove nonessential items from key rings until the problem is fixed. Chevy Volt beats Nissan Leaf again in February

For Chevy, February was a good month for Volt sales. They were up 62.5 percent compared to 2015, as the company locked in 1,126 sales. No one should be surprised, since buyers have a new generation Volt to look at on the lot this year. It was introduced late last year in just 11 states, with the nationwide roll-out not happening until this spring. Nonetheless, GM put the new Volt on sale in the states where it sold the most first-gen Volts, so the sales increase was totally expected. Year-to-date, Volt sales are up 71.8 percent: 2,122 for 2016 vs. 1,235 for January and February of 2015. Over in the Nissan lot, things look pretty much the same. By that I mean both the numbers (steadily down, recently) as well as the car itself. We've had numerous hints about a new Leaf, but nothing confirmed, and that means that fewer and fewer people are interested in the aging first-gen model. By the numbers, Nissan sold 930 Leaf EVs in the US last month, down 22.4 percent from the 1,198 it sold in February 2015. For the first two months of the year, Leaf sales are down 25.7 percent: 1,685 in 2016 compared to 2,268 in 2015. Ford, Toyota clean up in Best Car For The Money Awards

The U.S. News Best Cars for the Money Awards picks winners by looking at the average transaction price, five-year total cost of ownership, the regard a car has from the automotive press, reliability figures from J.D. Power and Associates and safety data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The result, according to the magazine, is "the best combination of critical acclaim and long-term value."
Ford nabbed six of the 21 categories that received awards this year, the Focus, Fusion, Fusion Hybrid, Taurus, Escape and Edge getting trophies. Toyota and its Lexus and Scion sub-brands took another five, the Tacoma and Tundra owning the two categories given to pickup trucks. The other ten awards were split between Honda with three, Buick with two, and one each for Subaru, BMW, Hyundai, Chevrolet and Mazda.
