GM Ultium tech can scavenge heat from everywhere, even you
Mon, Apr 25 2022GM likes to give us tidbits about its Ultium platform from time to time, and today it’s telling us about the platformÂ’s ability to capture waste heat from the propulsion system. In addition to capturing from the propulsion system, it can also capture humidity from both inside and outside the vehicle and even from passengersÂ’ body heat. Yes, you, your family and/or your friends are a usable heat source as far as GM EVs are concerned. It then deploys the heat in an advantageous way. If at this point, youÂ’re screaming, "Heat pump!" youÂ’d be right. WeÂ’re talking about an elaborate heat pump system that GM is using for its Ultium-based vehicles. Every Ultium-based GM vehicle gets this system that is covered by 11 patents and four publications. The waste heat it collects is used in a number of ways, but its primary use is to heat the cabin quickly and efficiently. GM claims it can heat the cabin of its Ultium-based vehicles quicker than vehicles with traditional internal combustion engines. Plus, when put to use, GM claims that using the heat pump provides its EVs with up to 10% more range than theyÂ’d have without. Beyond heating the cabin, the heat pump is capable of putting waste heat to use by preheating the battery prior to charging so that you can charge quicker. The system can even cool the propulsion system in preparation for Watts to Freedom (WTF) launch control starts. GM says this was vital in helping the Hummer EV achieve its bonkers 0-60 mph time of about 3 seconds. “Having a ground-up EV architecture gives us the freedom to build in standard features like UltiumÂ’s energy recovery capabilities,” said Doug Parks, GM executive VP of global product development, purchasing and supply chain. “This helps us squeeze more efficiency, performance and overall customer benefit out of our EVs.” GM says itÂ’s been developing heat pump technology since the EV1 and its heat pump. This is the modern evolution of that technology, and GM says itÂ’s going to be implemented in every Ultium-based vehicle as a standard feature. Recharge Wrap-up: U of M wins Solar Challenge, family attempts record-breaking e-bike ride
Thu, Aug 14 2014The University of Michigan Solar Car Team has won the 2014 American Solar Challenge. It is the team's eighth national championship, its fifth in a row, and its first using Siemens' product lifecycle management (PLM) software. The race took place over 1,722 miles and seven days traveling across eight states. The team's car, called "Quantum," outpaced the nearest competitor by four hours. Looking forward, Michigan Solar Car Project Manager Pavan Naik says, "The switch to Siemens tools will give us the ability to model and simulate everything and truly allow us to optimize the performance of our new vehicle. As we start on our quest to win the World Solar Challenge in 2015, we'll be leveraging a full complement of PLM solutions." Read more in the press release below. The EcoCar3 competition, in which teams will convert Chevrolet Camaros into hybrid electric cars, begins in September. The various college teams will have four years to lessen the car's environmental impact as much as possible while maintaining performance and, of course, that cool Camaro design. EcoCar3, which is put on by the US Department of Energy and General Motors, kicks off with a workshop in Novi, Michigan from September 16 - 18. Zap already has two lines creating the Urbee EV to met demand, and is switching over a third to make electric minivans and SUVs. The company aims to produce 30,000 EVs by 2015 for the Chinese market. Zap says it has a backlog of 25,000 Urbee orders. Read more in the press release below. A family of four hopes to make a world record-breaking, 6,000-mile electric bike journey this fall. The family, which recently drove from Argentina to Montana in a pickup with a camper, will ride from Montana to Maine, then down the East Coast to Florida in an attempt to break the record for longest electric bicycle ride. They'll use two bikes. The Father, Thomas, will ride one of the bikes carrying one of the children, while the rest of the family rides in a support vehicle, with the mother, Dylan, riding the second bike when they can find others to drive. 2016 Chevy Volt will be available across Canada, unlike most of US [UPDATE]

It's not enough that the Toronto Blue Jays may be the most intimidating team in Major League Baseball. Now, it appears that our neighbors to the north will also have some bragging rights in regards to General Motors' Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in vehicle. Specifically, most of Canada will have access to the 2016 version before most of the US will. In fact, the car will be available in Canada before people can buy it in Michigan. A trip to Windsor, Ontario, anyone? The Volt, which will boast a longer plug-in range than the current version, could go on sale in Canada as soon as November, GM Authority says. The model's second-generation version may debut in California as soon as this month, and is slated to be sold later this year in the 10 other states that abide by the so-called CARB (California Air Resources Board) rules for zero-missions vehicles. Those states include Oregon, Maine, New York and Massachusetts. But not GM's home state of Michigan. Either way, the new generation model's debut can't come soon enough for the US automaker, as Volt sales in 2015 have seriously lagged the 2014 numbers because of people waiting for the new version. "We will receive the 2016 Volt in Canada this fall, starting with our key Volt markets in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia," wrote General Motors of Canada spokesman George George Saratlic in an e-mail to AutoblogGreen. "Note these are also the three provinces that provide provincial incentives on EV purchases. We'll then roll out Volt to the rest of the country." Last week, details were revealed about the first sales of the 2016 Volt, where marketing efforts will be concentrated among the largest plug-in buying states in the union.
