2018 Chevy Sonic caught testing in The Motor City
Sun, Feb 28 2016Despite its role as the entry point into Chevrolet's lineup of sedans in America, the Sonic can be a fun little urban runabout in the same vein as the Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit. It's also impressively fuel efficient. Suffice it to say, then, that the Sonic is way better than the Aveo it replaces. And, as you can see from these spy shots, the next version of the Sonic is currently being tested in the wintry climes of Detroit, Michigan. The 2018 Chevy Sonic will be based on an updated Gamma platform that will be shared with the all-electric Chevy Bolt. In place of that's car electric motor and massive battery pack will be either a naturally aspirated four-cylinder or small turbocharged engine. Our spy shooters suggest a three-cylinder engine is also a possibility. While it's clear from these spy photos that the development of the next Sonic is well underway, nobody is quite sure where it will be built. Last October, we reported that 500 workers at GM's production facility in Orion Township were being laid off due in part to slow sales of the Sonic – you can thank the growing popularity of crossovers for that – and that plant is now being retooled for production of the Bolt. It's entirely possible that GM has decided to move production of the Chevy Sonic to Mexico, which would allow it to build a more profitable vehicle at Orion Township alongside the Bolt. Burt Reynolds' vehicles up for auction at Barrett-Jackson
Tue, Sep 25 2018Burt Reynolds' influence on car culture cannot be overstated. Be it "Smokey and the Bandit" or "Cannonball Run," his films inspired a generation of car enthusiasts. He died a few weeks back from cardiac arrest at age 82. This weekend, four vehicles from Reynolds' personal collection — three Pontiacs and a Chevy — will go up for auction at Barrett-Jackson in Las Vegas. It seems Reynolds had plans to sell the cars before he passed. He even filmed a short teaser for the auction and planned to attend the event himself. Three of the cars are Pontiac Trans Ams. Two are re-creations of the cars he drove in "Bandit" and the film "Hooper." Both are 1978 models. The third Trans Am is from 1984 and was used to promote Reynolds' USFL team, the Tampa Bay Bandits. The fourth vehicle is a 1978 Chevy R30 pickup truck. It's styled like the truck he drove in "Cannonball Run." None of the vehicles were actually used in the movies. But they were registered in his name, making them far more legitimate than some other movie-inspired clones. It's unclear how many Bandit Trans Ams Reynolds has owned over the years. Another car connected to him sold for $450,000 back in 2014. His death is sure to drive the price of these new cars even higher. GM files to trademark name Badlands
Mon, Feb 23 2015If you've been hoping for General Motors to come out swinging at the Ford F-150 Raptor, we've had some tantalizing news for you of late. Last month we brought you a report that indicated GM has trademarked the name "Z71 Trail Boss," suggesting a potential hardcore off-roader. Now it seems the General has filed for a potentially even better name. That name, as our friends over at GM Authority have discovered, is "Badlands." The application, filed on February 16, indicates that it's for a truck, but of course it doesn't specify just what form it would take... or for that matter, under which division it would fall. So we could, in theory, be looking at the nameplate for a Raptor rival from Chevy or GMC (like the 2011 Sierra All Terrain HD concept pictured here), or for some other trim level, a concept truck, a special edition... just about anything. Heck, it could be for a Vauxhall, Opel or Holden for all we know at this point. Or GM could choose not to use it on anything at all, but here's hoping it'll emerge as something awesome in US showrooms sometime soon.
