Every once in a while a car comes along with a special story that truly makes it a one-of-a-kind vehicle. This is one of those cars. This 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Hardtop was sold new at my dealership in 1955. It was traded in by the original owners at my dealership in 2000. The best part is that the same salesman who sold the car in 1955, took the car in trade 45 years later and sold his customer a new 2000 Impala. He was in his thirty's when he sold the car in 1955 and in his late seventy's when he took it back in trade. Back in 55' the salesman's father and older brother owned the dealership and this car was sold to his baby sister. She and her husband took the car on their honeymoon and kept it for the next 45 years. Fast forward to 2000 and my elderly salesman Bill asks me if I want take a 1955 Bel Air in trade on a new Impala. Of course I say yes, and he makes the deal with his sister. I personally travelled to Salt Lake City with a trailer and picked up the Bel Air at the owners home and brought it back to the dealership where we began a complete restoration. I will let the attached photos tell most of the story, but in short the following major items were done:
- The original 265 4V Powerpack V8 was completely rebuilt in my shop by a certified GM mechanic.
- The original cast iron two speed Powerglide transmission was completely rebuilt in my shop by the same mechanic.
- The original rear differential was completely rebuilt by the same mechanic.
- The original 4 barrel carburator was rebuilt by the same mechanic.
- All rusted body panels were replaced and the car was painted in my body shop.
- The interior was replaced with Danchuck materials.
- The clock and radio were repaired and are currently working properly.
- All other mechanical components were rebuilt or replaced.
I had planned on keeping this car for the rest of my life and keeping on display at my dealership. Then came the bankruptcy of GM, and my Chevrolet franchise was taken from me. Now looking at the car reminds me of the loss of a Chevrolet dealership that had been in continuous operation in the same location since 1936. It's time for someone else to own this vehicle who can enjoy it like I once did.

UAW to vote on strike at Kentucky Corvette plant
Tue, 08 Apr 2014The current wait time for a new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is well, not short. With word of a strike at the Bowling Green, KY factory responsible for seventh-generation sports car, though, that wait time could end up growing substantially.
Now, a strike is still a ways off. UAW Local 2164, which represents the 800 workers responsible for screwing the Corvette together, is set to vote on authorizing a strike today, but even if the employees give the action a go, it's far from a sure thing. According to The Tennessean, both regional and national union officials would need to put their stamp of approval on strike action.
"The membership has to vote to strike, but it's just a step in the process," said Gary Casteel, the UAW's Region 8 director and one of the people that would need to authorize a strike action. Casteel told The Tennessean, "It's purely a local situation, though. They are having some issues with the local management."
2014 Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra full configurators truck in
Sat, 15 Jun 2013You can now put prices to your wildest option-sheet dreams of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. A microsite for the full-size pickup truck twins has been up since January, and now the full-blown configurator is live and ready to take your virtual orders. The only two chassis configurations available at the moment are the Crew Cab with either a short or standard bed - Regular and Double Cab versions will come later. In Silverado flavors that will run you $32,710 for the short box, $33,010 for the standard box, while the Sierra adds a $1,500 premium to both of those prices, and destination and handling for both models adds another $995.
Since these are American pickups the list of modifications is lengthy, but we added $11,450 in just two steps by starting with the Silverado Crew Cab and standard bed, then checking four-wheel drive and the LTZ Z71 package. Our final truck, resplendent in Brownstone Metallic paint, heated and cooled Cocoa/Dune perforated leather seating and tasty details like chrome recovery hooks, and engine block heater and LED cargo box lighting, rang up $57,285 at the candy store.
They'll be on dealer lots sometime this summer, so now's a good time to start practicing your box-checking.
How GM engineers are using diaper 'snow' to keep you warm
Thu, Jan 8 2015Testing how snow affects General Motors' vehicles isn't really a problem right now for the company's engineers, but in the dog days of summer the process isn't exactly easy. The only real option is for them to book time at the automaker's climatic wind tunnel. However, a flash of brilliance from an engineer allows snow to be simulated regardless of the temperature outside, and the discovery is all because of his daughter's wet diaper. The realization came to GM Thermal Systems engineer Nicholas Jahn while he was swimming with his daughter and noticed how her diaper ballooned in size in the water. He found out the substance that makes this possible is called sodium polyacrylate. When the material gets wet it grows and forms fluffy flakes that are a close imitation of snow. Best of all, the stuff can be prepared easily any time of the year, and it's reusable. The engineering team uses the material to test the effectiveness of the heating systems of GM's vehicles. They spread the sodium polyacrylate over the inlets at the base of the windshield to obstruct the airflow and then crank the heater. After some time, they can see how much is being sucked into the system and design more efficient systems in the future. See how the process works in the video above and read about the diaper discovery in GM's press release below. Diapers Change Chevy Cruze Winter Warm-up Time GM validation engineer uses diaper material "snow" to reduce frigid drives 2015-01-06 DETROIT – An item commonly found on an infant's changing table is helping General Motors' engineers simulate snow year round, ensuring heating systems in cars like the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze can quickly and efficiently warm its interior. Packed snow can prevent air from entering the inlet panel at the bottom of the windshield, obstructing the flow of air into the heating system and reducing the amount of air it can push out. This can lead to less efficient warming of the car's interior and windshield defrosting. "The last thing anyone wants to do when it's freezing cold out is scrape their windshield," said Nicholas Jahn, GM Vehicle Thermal Systems engineer. "The testing we perform on the Chevrolet Cruze with the diaper material allows us to maximize the car's heating capabilities." Ironically, Jahn stumbled upon his diaper-based testing method in the middle of summer. During a swim with his daughter, he noticed her diaper multiplied in size when it came into contact with water.
