The 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator is one of the more eccentric offerings from the Mercury line of muscle cars.  Cougar was Mercury’s version of a Pony car.  Many are inclined to identify it with a Mustang but it has many differences.  One the wheelbase is three inches longer so ride is much smoother.  Additional sound deadening material was used through out and created a sports luxury touring car.  However once you step up to the Eliminator you have your sports touring car setup for all out performance!  The Cougar’s cat’s claw was really scratching away at the competition in terms of weight to power ratio and zero to sixty times.  The covered headlights had headlight doors received a matte black treatment to emphasize the Eliminator performance profile.  Eliminator side stripes moved from the belt line to the upper bodyline running the full length of the car to add more drama.  Styled steel wheels were part of the package.

The Boss 302 also carried an oil cooler, aluminum cast valve covers and revised cylinder heads for better low-end torque and performance.  The 302 Boss engine was felt by most of the magazine editors who tested the car in its day that it was the perfect match of the right engine with the right car.  0-60 times were something just under seven seconds and 0-100 could sometimes be performed in under twenty seconds.  The Cougar cat 302 Boss could run with the competition and many of the big boys with much larger engines.

Here at MissChiTown we just love the Grabber Blue color and the overall grace of the silhouette with broad shoulders that lets you know that this is a car that can run on its testosterone to give you a thrill or on the other side of the coin you can enjoy driving this car through the city at non-racing speeds.

Now get this, this car is owned by the original owner!  He is elderly now and has some health issues that prevent him from driving this stick shift car and he is reluctantly giving up ownership in the car and hopes that the new owner will take the same great care of the car that he has for almost 44 years.  The seller’s father was a Ford Lincoln Mercury dealer and he had all the maintenance work performed as required and then some.  This is not a car that has been ‘fluffed up’ by some retail operator but is a car that has been owned and loved by one owner since new and it is still in its original paint, interior, motor, transmission and rear end that it was born with.

The seller has told us that the car has virtually no dents but has had some touchup work here and there.  The only thing that has been changed on the car from original is that he took off the Rev Eliminator (this keeps you from revving up the engine beyond a certain number of RPMs).   The seller bought this car brand new and has had it ever since.  The car has been kept in a climate-controlled garage and the 41,006 miles are accurate.  The seller says that the original interior is in very fine condition.  The trunk is in great condition.  The car has never been raced.

Let’s be honest you don’t see a Mercury Eliminator everyday on eBay and the truth be told you very seldom see one come available for sale especially with the original owner and a high impact color.  We have noted here at MissChiTown that many of the muscle car collectors that have been collecting the traditional muscle cars are now going for the more ‘edgy’ muscle cars that have been hard to find such as the Eliminator.  If you only had one car in your collection this car would surely fill the bill for the most fun possible.

FROM THE INTERNET

Ford's legendary Boss 302 V-8 was a homologation engine built to satisfy the Sports Car Club of America's Trans-Am series' 1,000-unit production requirement. Consequently, the 301.6-cu.in. race engine shared a lot of architecture with the production engine. Standard fare included: a four-bolt-main block; huge, staggered, canted valves in the ''semi-hemi'' Cleveland-type cylinder heads with ports big enough to push your fist through; threaded rocker-arm studs; pushrod guide plates; mechanical lifters; and a high-rise dual-plane aluminum intake manifold with a single four-barrel Holley 780-CFM carburetor. This was an engine designed to make all of its power at the upper reaches of the rpm range.

This high-winding, road-racing engine is most commonly associated with Mustangs, but it could also be ordered in the Cougar Eliminator. The Cougar Eliminator package was, in fact, a separate Cougar model and advertised its performance intentions with front and rear spoilers, sport mirrors, a blacked-out grille, hood scoop and special striping. The base power train included a 300hp four-barrel 351 mated to a four-speed manual transmission.

The Eliminator also included heavy springs (leafs in the rear, coils up front), heavy shocks and a rear stabilizer bar, as well as F70-14 belted tires on steel wheels. Inside, the performance theme continued with high-back bucket seats, a full set of instruments including a 6,000-RPM tachometer, an oil pressure gauge, "rally clock," and a two-spoke steering wheel. In addition to the meanest of Ford's V-8 engines, Eliminator buyers could also opt for the Drag Pak, a Hurst shifter or a Detroit Locker.
