You are bidding on a classic 240 Volvo Wagon in above average  condition. Owned for the last 20 years by the same northern Va family, they invested in Michelins, installed aftermarket CD player, has the original quite decent looking paint etc

A  solid dependable workhorse of a car that runs smoothly and quietly , offers solid ride, good and handling, fun to drive and  dependable. Very smooth on the highway. Some minor-modest  issues consistent with age, overall decent car.  And, of course, rare 5 speed that will make it last even longer and get even better gas mileage.

  --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Opportunity to own a  Volvo legend; a 240 DL wagon, equipped with a manual 5 speed transmission.  Comes in its original 211 paint code, Deep Red (Bordeaux Red) .

I have driven it for about  3 weeks , maybe close to 800 miles, without a problem.

A nice bonus – no inspection needed – ever. If  you want to exercise it - there is no vehicle inspection required in most states for this Volvo as a pre-1994 car  . Just purchase car, tag it  and go. Certainly that’s true in Maryland. Check your state. Also no emissions inspection . It all helps.

According to our information ,within the last year the following maintenance items have been addressed; New: Spark plugs, distributer cap & rotor, air filter, oil and filter change, thermostat,  & possibly a few other items.

As seen in the picture new v-belts have been bought and are ready to go on (in back seat ) as needed.

No accident history.

Came in here in nice cosmetic and mechanical condition. Here’s my  detailed report.

Engine-  The engine is Volvo’s  ultra high quality and dependable 2.3 liter 4 cylinder… the engine standout that Volvo burnished their reputation on. Super strong, super dependable, easy to work on, a legendary, trouble free power plant .

This one's in good shape. Engine oil shows clean and clear oil – as aid was changed earlier just before traded.  Engine is strong, and smooth. No “blow by”.

Looks like timing belt was  done at some point per the sticker on the engine as seen in the picture, although I can’t make out the dates.

Transmission shifts fine- Clutch is fine , and shifts easily,

------------------------------------------------------

Includes good supply of emergency parts extra oil, fan alternator and timing belts, engine oil, front brake pads new in box , emergency flairs and  owners manual .  Tires – Tires are a matching set of Michelins with good tread. The front Michelins have  some more edge wear than the rears .

Emergency brake – good.

Air conditioning but doesn’t seem cold.

Everything else seems to work fine including the rear wiper/washer & defroster.

Aftermarket CD player and tuner.

You’ll will notice the steering is straight.

The drive is smooth and tracks well in that Smooth as  the “Volvo brick” way at  highway speed way . You will notice however that same smooth suspension it tends to rattle and bump a bit if you drive slowly through a rough pot hole filled parking lot with speed bumps and dips -

Heat is strong.

Fan blower motor is quiet  on the dash and smooth on the dash unlike some other Volvos fans.

Interior- Overall affect is fine. Carpets are fine . Upholstery is a solid B+ to A, exception of drivers seat that has a faux sheep fleece on it covering a couple of good size seat splits in the "pleather". You don’t feel them)

Exhaust – New looking exhaust, muffler and  tailpipe and solid full length exhaust in good shape. Power locks open correctly, are temperamental and balky in closing. I lock the driver door first, then the driver rear second (last).

Brakes seem just a smidge squishy but Ok. (I’ve been driving it 3 weeks, so in reality they didn’t bother  me  )Might be worth putting the new pads on the front that the owner had in the emergency supply and spare parts box.

Speedometer  works fine, but  odometer DOESN'T work. (A common 240 issue.) Mileage is 150,584 on both the title and the car and of course in reality is more, but not sure how much. Anyway - As we all know these cars are so durable – particularly  in a 5 speed – the mileage doesn’t matter that much anyway.

All lights and lenses are also fine . Front lights, both headlights and marker lights  clear and bright. Taillight lens intact and functional, but show couple little repairs. .

I've driven it maybe 600-800 miles already.  Dependable, simple, smooth classic that should last a several hundred thousand more miles  because it what it is. No Cadillac that’s for sure , but a dependable beast that keeps chugging.

The body as you can see in the pictures is actually pretty good. Couple very small nicks abut generally excellent. Some kind of epoxy-like  looking repair or resurfacing amidships on each rocker panel by the door . Looks like the 2 long 1” molding strips in that same area have been taken off and/or worked on and were also reattached.  Not perfect, still – not bad. At least the owner apparently cared about the car enough to  keep reinvesting time and money into it.

Couple spots Few modest rust bubbles visible along windshield line (Also as in pictures )and one small spot on the lift gate . Again for what the car is – not bad a t all. Other than that I can’t see anything . Underneath also , no rust. Looks like the ziebart type seal.

Paint shines  well and the car looks generally looks good. I will say however in honestly I know from experience this color this paint has a tendancy to go dull over time and needs regular wax to look well . And Moreover - again just to be really honestly- in my real opinion - it probably looks a just little better in pictures than in reality. Something about digital photography tends to make cars look better.....

DID YOU KNOW? ---

A stick shift vehicle, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS lasts much longer than an automatic transmission  car?

There’s no debate about it. It’s absolutely true. The engine in a  manual shift vehicle just lasts longer. Much longer.  Why?

In a manual shift car, there’s considerably less wear and tear on the engine.  Reason is -The engine doesn’t have to push all that huge mass of interlocking gears, bands, valves etc up and down the shift cycle all the time. Thus, ...the vehicle (the engine ) lasts much longer.  Over the years we’ve sold cars, we  see 1000’s of wholesale used trucks and cars. The stick shift vehicles ALWAYS outlast  the automatics- by far ! Interesting, huh?

And....Better gas mileage with a 5 speed too.  And also …less expensive to fix if by chance you do ever have a problem. Any other issue – needs lift gate hold up struts.

Safety, weight and strength in a crash – Hey what can one say. It’s a sturdy, heavy solidly built Volvo.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Safety for you –

A few years back, when Volvo advertised an "Accidental Loss of Life" insurance policy for all '96 models, they  had solid empirical data upon which to make their offer . Amazingly , Volvo will tell you that NO driver deaths occurred in single-vehicle crashes or rollovers of the Volvo 240 car during the 1990-94 period. Not one . Amazing safely record.

Volvo made its reputation for safety and dependability with these cars. You will notice there are still a lot of them around for a reason. They are extremely strong, safe cars.

 To Purchase it Now-

If you want  the Sell it

Now ….

In the interest of selling it quickly I’ve reduced it for the eBay sale. [It has been for sale locally on one of the lots , financeable, .......for $2,995 and it’s still here. It needs to go. ] Now, its no longer financeable and we’ve reduced it and  will just sell it for cash.

So, the Sell it Now  for the eBay sale has been reset to just $1,788 ……….just to sell it. That’s less by far than  we though it was worth but at this point , but in a sense, it’s offering an early bird discount if someone takes it mid-auction, before the auction is over.

You never now   with eBay. but it may very well  possiblely  go well  over $1,788 if someone doesn’t take it mid-week.  You never know with eBay. Look around on eBay, check the landscape for similar  Volvos in the  91 and 92 and  93 240’s with  Michelins, nice body and paint clean,  stick shift . We’re  at a   discount now. I saw one the other week, couple years newer , few less miles,  geez,  asking $7,500. Ouch! By that measure, we’re giving this away.

Please call me with any question or concern. I will help you if I possibly can. Jim , 410-562-8317.

Barring that,  and in any event, if you don’t take it for $1,788, it will be sold, NO RESERVE to the highest bidder.

So, I hope that’s clear enough. Don’t hesitate if you want it.)

Hope I haven’t overstated the case here . Don't expect perfection- at all . After all it’s not a shrink wrapped, time capsule, off the shelf cream puff. Still,  I will say , it’s a nice, durable, safe economical  car with plenty of life left in it. Not classic mint, but a classic in its own way nevertheless … and ..and I’m a bit of a "fan". Anyway…

You can fly into BWI (Baltimore) (cheap flights) and drive this Volvo  anywhere in the country. Or call for a quote on shipping. Thanks for your interest. Thanks for reading  and good luck bidding. Jim.
