Please note that experience shows us that the photobucket of over 100 large pixel pictures posted here are in most cases best viewed and downloaded using the very latest and most updated version of the 'Firefox' browser as some other browsers and especially older browser versions are not capable of accommodating the size of the download. Over the years our clients have overwhelmingly been appreciative of our many unaltered large pixel photos posted in our ads and our feedback has been that it is very rare that a seller will post all but the most flattering of photographs. We prefer to expose the complete roll of film taken of the car, in sometimes unflattering but natural sunlight, in order for our prospective buyers to be able to see true and reliable images of the car advertised and that is the reason for some seemingly duplicated shots. We trust you will agree.

West Coast Classics are proud to present an absolutely exceptional example of this extraordinarily rare 1974 Porsche 914 2.0L 'Can Am' Limited Edition 'Creamsicle 5 speed manual Targa Coupe; an obviously always garaged since imported to southern California example of the iconic limited edition of 1,000 cars built in 1974 to commemorate Porsche Can Am success. The cars were all painted in one of only two special styles and were all equipped with cast Mahle 4 bolt wheels. The color schemes were black with yellow valences and bumpers and a yellow PORSCHE sticker at the bottom of the doors and white (Ivory) with red/orange valences/bumpers and stickers. The pressure cast alloy wheels were also painted to match the trim colors. The former scheme is commonly referred to as the 'Bumblebee' and the latter is referred to as the 'Creamsicle', such as this particular example. These limited edition cars were fully loaded with all the options for 1974.

The 914 LE cars were built during a seven week period from mid February through late April 1974. The VIN numbers and dates of the Limited Edition models are listed on the '914 Can Am Registry' which indicates that there were approximately 2,400 vehicles built during those weeks, so nearly half of the 914 cars assembled in those few weeks were 914 Can Am cars, but of approximately 118,000 914 cars built from 1970-76, less than 1% of all these 914 cars built were 914 LE cars, making them amongst the rarest of Porsches and a true sleeper collectible for the discerning Porsche enthusiast! Furthermore with only 1,000 914 LE's produced, an authentic 914 LE car would therefore be three times as rare as the legendary 914/6 of which some 3,200 examples were built between their 1970-72 production years. Based on these production figures, the only factory built 914 Porsche cars rarer than a 914 LE are the 914/6 GT's, 914's with Sportomatics and the 916 and 914/8 cars. Because of this rarity, special status and unique features, any legitimate factory 914 Can Am car is amongst the most prestigious and collctible of all factory produced 4 cylinder 914's!

Due to the many cloned 914's available it is critical to be able to authenticate any Bumblebee or Creamsicle on the market and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity is essential for this purpose. Also note the correct 914 LE VIN ranges between 4742914348 - 4742916764. Correct Factory Paint Codes of either L041 (Black) or L80E (Light Ivory). 914 Can Am Front Spoiler. Side Stripes/Accent color wheels, valences and bumpers. Omitted Targa bar vinyl/black exterior metal trim, foglamp grilles. Light Gray headlight relay covers. 2.0L engine, front/rear anti-roll bars, floglamps, center console (please note that the center console was removed from our particular example some years ago and is unfortunately no longer available). Special all Black interior. Black center instrument panels. Black plastic tailpanel emblems, windshield washer jets. Most 914 LE cars were factory equipped with Boge shock absorbers with Bilstein and Koni shock absorbers available as an optional upgrade. Also confirm the vehicle manufacturing date is between February and April 1974.

With the 914's low silhouette familiar to sports car enthusiasts the world over, the 914 LE's color schemes immediately identified it as a unique example. It would seem that the cost of the 914 LE was considered a loss leader in terms of cost to Porsche for the purpose of attracting more buyers to the standard 914 car. Therefore it would also seem that the economics of its production destined its production to be limited to only 1,000 cars at the original conception of the car. VW of America and Porsche, who teamed up to build the 914 in 1969, and which ultimately won the prestigious 'Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year' for 1970, may have covered their costs but it reportedly lost profit with every 914 Limited Edition built in 1974 with the hope of overall further market share gain as the only possible incentive. Ultimately, within two years Porsche ended production of the 914 altogether, even though the series had had the most successful sales rate of any Porsche up to that time, outselling the 911 by a wide margin. The 2.0L fuel injected flat 4 cylinder engine from the Can Am continued to be used in the 912E.

Today all 914 LE cars are highly prized and sought after by collectors with their unique design and limited production numbers creating a strong demand for an authentic example such as this. As collectible Porsche prices continue to rise rapidly in the collector market in recent years, the interest in the 914 LE cars is steadily increasing also, with many pundits believing they will one day prove to be the ultimate 'sleeper' in entry level collector Porsches. Remember just a few years ago when 356's could hardly be given away and today they command blue chip prices! Who's to say good condition and well documented 914's and especially the 914 Can Am LE's may well be the next 356's in terms of value, with the few remaining 914 LE cars obviously continuing to demand the highest prices of all 914/4 cars. As old as the 914 cars are now, with many having succumbed to rust, legendary abuse on the racing circuits, neglect and notorious rust, there are very few known 914 LE examples remaining anywhere according to the 'Can Am Registry'. With Bumblebees reportedly having a slight majority of the survivors compared to Creamsicles, our documented and all original specifications example is then obviously a most worthy candidate for the enthusiast to consider! It is also known that the later owners of the original 914 LE cars may not have liked the bold color schemes, as was true of many other critics of this colorful period of the 1970's car market, and therefore several 914 LE cars were actually painted over in order to conform to more conventional 914's, as is human nature, making still all original examples such as this one all the rarer still.

This particular model is finished in its original and beautiful factory color combination of 'Light Ivory' exterior color paint with 'Phoenix Red Trim', all of which is in quite exceptional and in mostly all original condition, apart obviously from the center console having been removed at some point! There are no signs of any accidents and it is an obviously always babied and pampered example if there ever was one which had been owned for many years by one proud California owner before we recently purchased the car from him. The cars older repaint in its original 'Light Ivory' color is still in quite beautiful condition with only very minor imperfections noticeable only upon close inspection. The black interior is also in beautiful condition with virtually no signs of any major wear!

The car drives exactly like a well maintained model should and must be seen and driven to be truly appreciated! The car had 4 new Pirelli P400 tires at 30,625 miles; a new battery, alternator, install electronic ignition system, temp sensor, BOSCH voltage regulator & Ignition coil, all new fuel injection hoses & injector seals, adjust valves, replace gaskets, adjust timing, adjust fuel pressure, new spark plugs (Cost $1,894) at the renown 'German Import Service' of Simi Valley, California at 32,333 miles; new BOSCH fuel injection pump, oil change (Cost $732) also at 'German Import Service' at 32,475 miles.

The car boasts its original spare wheel and owners manuals and the recently ordered 'Porsche Certificate of Authenticity' showing original Light Ivory/Phoenix Red Trim/Black Leatherette and optional equipment of 'CanAm' Limited Edition Package, Intermittent Wipers, US Equipment, Sealed Beam Headlights. (See Photos Below)

You will surely look long and hard to find a finer example of this exceptionally clean and cherished and very rare and internationally desirable fully documented 1974 Porsche 914 'Can Am' Limited Edition 'Creamsicle' in this rarest of color combinations!
