You gotta love Audi. Audi is the ideal choice for drivers who believe discretion is the better part of showing off and love to drive.

Welcome to one of the world's best interiors. Not even brother Bentley can compete with the A3's superbly coordinated combination of shapes, textures, colors, materials and ergonomics. Every switch, from the radio station buttons to the odometer's trip reset to the HomeLink transponder, responds with the exact same click. Audi employs haptic and olfactory teams to make sure Audi interiors feel and smell like, um, Audi interiors.

Cruising is Audi's default mode, but there's plenty of scope for speed-oriented shenanigans, what with seriously grippy brakes and supernatural handling.

The two-liter four-cylinder turbo deserves special mention. Stuffed into the A3's engine room, however, is a sweetheart of a 197-hp turbocharged 4-cylindar motor. The powerplant stumps-up enough low-end grunt to maintain smooth progress without dialing-up the revs. Once the turbos kick-in, the five-door Audi bolts with the kind of free-flowing mechanical abandon that makes driving fun. The A3 sprints to sixty in 6.5 seconds and tops out at a 130mph (limited). That's not bad for a 3800lbs. vehicle that travels 25 miles to a gallon.

The A3's motor displaces 2.0 liters and uses Audi's FSI system. FSI stands for "fuel stratified injection," which means that rather than spray fuel into the intake tract, like conventional port fuel injection does, this FSI motor squirts the gas straight into the combustion chamber. A major benefit of FSI is its ability to run lean air-to-fuel ratios, but there's a side effect of more NOX production. Unfortunately, the catalysts that can clean the extra NOX would be contaminated by the high sulfur content of U.S. fuels, so although A3s in Europe run lean, they don't in the States. The other benefit is better charge cooling, which allows the FSI engine to run a high compression ratio (10.3:1).

The A3 has a fantastic ride-and-handling compromise. It's firm enough to control body motions yet not at all harsh. Bumps are absorbed enough to cushion but not so much as to isolate. You get that vital communication with the tires without suffering a jarring ride. Unlike some other electrically assisted steering systems, the A3's always seems to dial up the right amount of assist.
