This 1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible is a beautifully restored muscle car with great options and southern history! When Pontiac's lead engineer John Delorean (yes, that Delorean) and PMD's General Manager Pete Estes devised an idea of selling the performance-oriented GTO option package on Pontiac's Tempest LeMans, few could have envisioned how revolutionary of an idea it was and would eventually become. See, if you wanted to go fast in the early 1960s, you essentially had 2 options a small car with a small engine or a big car with a big engine. In fact, Pontiac's parent company General Motors limited the size of engines that could be placed in the mid-size A-Body platform. To skirt GM's draconian limitation, Pontiac initially offered the GTO as a limited release option package rather than its own separate model. The GTO package's recipe of placing Pontiac's large 389 Cubic Inch V8 in a mid-size body would be replicated by virtually every marque across the American automotive industry, launching the muscle car era. After experiencing impressive success, General Motors raised their cubic inch limit and the GTO would become its its own standalone model under the Pontiac umbrella. On September 21, 1967, Pontiac debuted its completely redesigned 1968 GTO, featuring a brand new look up front. Perhaps the most noticible changes occurred to front bumper now equipped with a brand new steel-reinforced rubber "Endura" nose. Pontiac also restyled the grille in 1968 and began offering optional vacuum-operated "Hide-Away" headlights. The windshield wipers were also tucked away from view, a feature that became standard across all Pontiacs in 1968. The interiors were also updated and were more plush than General Motors' entry-level offerings, featuring better quality and more ornate upholstery along with woodgrain accents. With its innovative new looks and features, the 1968 Pontiac GTO was named Motor Trend's 1968 Car of the Year winning the "Golden Caliper" award. Powering this '68 GTO is a replacement 400 Cubic Inch V8 engine fed by a single 4 barrel carburetor. The 400 V8 is backed by a Turbo-Hydramatic 400 Automatic Transmission that is shifted via the nifty His/Her shifter. Exhaust exits this Pontiac's powerplant via a dual exhaust setup that generates a fantastic throaty sound out the rear tailpipes. This Pontiac muscle car comes loaded with wonderful options! With power brakes, bringing this 1968 GTO to a complete stop is made much easier and the dual master cylinder provides for much more reliable stopping power. Power steering is another welcome addition to this '68 Pontiac GTO since it makes squeezing in and out of tight parking spaces a total breeze, whether you're at the local car show or ice cream shop. You'll be able to keep the rubber to the pavement since this GTO Convertible is equipped with a Safe-T-Track positraction rear differential. The black vinyl power convertible top is in fantastic condition and it goes up and down with the simple flick of a switch. Riding on a set of BFGoodrich raised letter Radial T/A tires mounted on Rally II wheels, this 1968 GTO Convertible has a great look and even better ride. The body of this '68 GTO has been refinished in Starlight Black paint that completes the exterior look of the car. The interior of this 1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible is stunning! The front bucket seats and rear bench seat have been reupholstered in gorgeous black vinyl. The black carpeting, center console, door panels, padded dash, and steering wheel are all in wonderful shape as well and appear to retain a nice stock look. This '68 GTO Convertible is also outfitted with a tilt steering column which makes for a much more comfortable driving experience. Instrumentation includes a 120 MPH speedometer, 8,000 RPM tachometer, and gasoline gauge, along with indicator lights for oil pressure, engine temperature, and generator charging. The dash is completed with various controls, climate controls, a locking glovebox, and a retro-style AM/FM/Cassette entertainment system. Whether you're buying your very first classic muscle car or you're adding to GTO collection, this 1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible would make an excellent choice.
