A lot of those people are car collectors, and every so often I get to purchase a car or five from them. This particular 1978 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible is just such a car, and the level of care, maintenance, and customization it has been given over the years is beyond compare. THIS VEHICLE HAS A CLEAN AND CLEAR FLORIDA TITLE IN OUR POSSESSION, AND IS NOT A CONSIGNMENT VEHICLE. DESCRIPTION Not many cars are as iconic as the VW Beetle, and this 1978 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible is an excellent example of the model from top to tires. The first thing that gets your attention is the gorgeous Senegal Red finish on the car. It is so rich, shiny, wet, and clean looking, you will think you were transported to a VW dealer showroom in 1979! The finish is extremely nice, and the car still wears all of its original sheet metal from new and shows to be completely rust free. The paint is glossy and smooth, thanks to meticulous care and indoor storage, and paint has just a handful or so truly minor marks on it from 36 years of use. The car is purported and believed to have just 49,199 original miles on it, which equates to a little more than 1360 miles per year, so it is no wonder it still shows like new! A few little scuffs, some small stone chips, and little marks are the only signs that this car was driven at all, and as you can see in the 100 photos below, the car looks beautiful from every possible angle, up close-AND-far away. The white convertible top on the car is incredibly clean, shows no rips, tears, or seam pulls, and is fit with the glass rear window with defroster. It goes up and down smoothly and easily, and all of the rubber seals and trim attached to it show incredibly well too. It is just as clean and issue free on the inside as it is outside. A black convertible top boot is included, and it is so clean I can’t imagine it being on the car too often. It fits snugly, and all of the snaps are intact and function as they should. All of the glass on the car is in exceptional condition, and close review shows no sign of laminate issues, cracks, chips, or scuffs. All of the weather-stripping and rubber seals on the car is in exceptional condition, and is NOT dry, brittle, cracking, or damaged in any way. The side windows all have deluxe chrome trim rails that look fantastic. The front windshield surround has a polished insert that looks wonderful, and is not dented or dinged up. Chrome bumpers on the front and back of the car look great, and show only the faintest signs of age, and have protective rubber centers that are clean and NOT brittle or cracking. Chrome headlamp rings look fantastic on both sides, and look great with the equally clean chrome front signal caps. A chrome front bonnet handle matches the hood strip and shows wonderfully, while polished side mirrors show like new on each side. Out back, a set of chrome quad tip exhaust tips peaks out and lets everyone know that something good lurks under the engine cover of this particular Beetle. Black running boards show incredibly well, and have polished top ribs on them. A 1978 Volkswagen plate frame is included, and looks great on the car. This machine rides on a set of Classic Radial LL800 tires on all four corners that are practically new, and show no sign of abnormal wear, dry rot, or aging. They are mounted on a set of show polished EMPI 8-spoke wheels with chrome center caps that all in very good condition, with no abnormal wear or damage. When you take time to detail the car and wipe them down, they will probably show like new again! Open the front bonnet on the car, and you are met by a clean, painted interior with a full carpeted mat, as well as an included car cover with storage bag, some miscellaneous spare parts, and a VW repair manual that all come with the car. The under hood area is ridiculously clean, and shows like new. A full size spare with new tire are under the carpeted storage area, and look to be in fantastic condition. Overall, the exterior of this VW warrants a rating of 9 out of 10, and only the fact that I have not had the car professionally detailed is keeping it from being higher than that. If you take the time to wash, wax, and wipe down all the little nooks and crannies on the car, it will be a solid 9.6 from front to back. It gets better though! Open the doors and you met by one of the cleanest interiors I have seen in years on ANY car! The deluxe leatherette seats in the car are in absolutely AMAZING condition, and from front to back still look like they belong in a new car!!! There are NO rips, tears, stains, brittle areas, dry rot, or seam pulls on the seats, and they are soft and supportive as the day they were made, with full movement functionality and ZERO issue. Sit in the driver seat, and you are staring straight at a GORGEOUS Mountney of Britain M-Range steering wheel with three drilled spokes and an ultra-clean wood rim. It couldn’t be in better condition unless it was still in a box, and looks great with the stunning wooden shift knob the car has. Custom sourced window rollers carry the drilled them over, and work and look like new, as do the door panels with map pockets, and the original door pulls. There are no rips, tears, damage, or stains to be found on the door panels or the rear seat panels either, and only the armrests show any sign of faint patina at all. The dash itself is ultra-clean, unblemished, and shows just as lovely as the rest of the car. From left to right you will find the following: LIGHT SWITCH TOGGLE AFTERMARKET DIGITAL CLOCK (FULLY FUNCTIONAL) FUNCTIONAL SEAT BELT AND EMERGENCY BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS (AS WELL AS THE FUNCTIONAL BUZZER) SHIFT PATTERN INSTRUCTION PLATE REAR DEFROST SWITCH HAZARD LIGHT SWITCH AFTERMARKET SONY AM/FM/CASSETTE PLAYER WITH PLL DIGITAL TUNER FAN AND AIR/HEAT CONTROLS KNOBS ASHTRAY (NEVER USED AND CLEAN AS NEW) LOCKING GLOVEBOX THAT IS LINED AND HOLDS A TOOL KIT POUCH AND TOOLS FOR THE CAR UNDERDASH MOUNTED VDO GAUGE POD WITH BLACK FACE/WHITE LETTER GAUGES FOR OIL PRESSURE AND VOLTS CUSTOM MOLDED PLASTIC UNDERDASH FUSE BOX PANEL WITH MODERN CARTRIDGE FUSES CUSTOM MOLDED FRONT KICK PANELS WITH BUILT-IN SONY SPEAKERS ON EACH SIDE, AND A DRIVER SIDE 12 VOLT PLUG Between the seats, a center console surrounds the black leather booted shift lever, and has a cup holder and small storage area. A fully functional Emergency Brake lever is in excellent condition, as is its grained black boot. Heat controls on both sides still have the original yellow handle caps, and work like they should. The banded black carpet in the car shows like new from front to back, and is in absolutely incredible condition with no rips, tears, stains, or damage. It is protected front and rear by custom-made, red banded black floor mats, which are equally as clean and new looking thanks to a clear plastic cover the prior owner kept over THEM! Dual sun visors show perfectly, and functional as they should. The convertible top releases and opens with ease, and the car can be made ready for open air enjoyment in a matter of moments. All of the items in the car work as they should. The headlights work, the high beams work, the turn signals work, the back-up light works, the running lights work, the horn works, and the wipers work. The stereo sounds fantastic, and functions like it should. From the paint to the carpet to the upholstery, the interior of this car is a solid 9.5 out of 10, and I am sure that once you have it detailed, it will get to the top of the mountain! Simply put, it is one of the cleanest and well-maintained interiors you will find in ANY collector car. The prior owner of this car wanted it to be powerful, and a little different from the rest of the pack, so he had the original 1600cc motor completely re-worked and customized to take it from its original 50hp up to 65hp, adding a substantial amount of torque and good-looks to the mix at the same time. Open the engine cover on this Beetle, and prepare to get blinded initially but the polished aluminum and chrome EVERYTHING that resides underneath it! It is all in great condition, and save for the fact that the car has NOT been detailed by me and could use a good wipe down in back, shows like it was just done a few weeks ago! Dual 40mm H40 Brosol Solex Kadron carbs rest upon polished EMPI dual port manifolds, and are treated to chromed air cleaners with washable gauze internals. A Kadron linkage, re-sized air correction jets, modified accelerator pump discharge nozzles, and more all equate to letting much more air and fuel get inside the original block. A custom fabricated exhaust header mates to the aforementioned quad tipped exhaust to let more air out, and more power is readily available to make driving this little machine a BLAST! A Pertronix Flamethrower coil and Mechanical Advance Distributor are just some of the other goodies in the engine bay, and it really has a substantial amount of get-up-and-go when compared to a stock Beetle. All of the work was performed by a dedicated VW ONLY shop in North Florida, according to the prior owner, as he said his mechanical ability was opening his beer cap! The car starts easily, idles clean and smooth, and is ready to go whenever and wherever you want to. In fact, the last long trip the previous owner took it on was about a 400 mile round-trip through North Florida where it performed flawlessly the entire time! The stock transmission is in exceptional working condition, and clutch take-up and feel is exceptionally solid. It snicks into each gear smoothly, and STAYS in gear without any issues. Power comes on smoothly and seamlessly in all gears, and the car does not have any flat spots or issues when driving it. The engine has not leaked or wept on our shop floor in a three weeks we have had it, and I have personally driven the car over 100 miles in a mix of highway and in-town traffic without it showing issues whatsoever. The chassis on the car is just as amazing as the rest of it, and the original floor pan looks like it was 1979 and you were checking out a 3,000 mile dealer demonstrator at the VW store! It is clean, has normal road grime, but does not have any dents, holes, damage, rust, or issues at all. Brakes were replaced on the car at about 37,500 miles according to the prior owner, and it stops on a dime while giving you nine cents change without any pulling, excessive fade, or undue pedal modulation. It does not pull side to side, and it tracks straight and true, even under heavy braking. The ride quality is fantastic, and new struts were installed about the same time the brakes were, and appear to functioning perfectly. Highway manners are exceptional, and it tracks straight and true while cruising, without any odd pulling or wander. In town, the ride is soft and supple, and it takes bumps without any odd noises or rattling. If you put the car on a lift and spent some time cleaning the undercarriage, you could probably make this thing about as nice as any 1978 Beetle around today. It is a ridiculously clean car that overwhelms your senses the more you look at it, and rewards you with a “new-car” experience with classic car style and elegance. I am pretty sure you could fly in and drive this thing home anywhere in the lower 48, and I bet it would do just fine. It is a great driver, and has been maintained wonderfully since new. There are NO known mechanical, operational, functional, electrical, or operational issues that I am aware of other than what has been disclosed in the listing above. In the area? Come see it.
