 Description

1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe One Owner Original unmolested with factory A/C! ***7,540 original miles*** Last registered in 1996! The Karmann Ghia combined the simplicity and economy of the Type 1 Beetle with the Italian design team from Ghia. The more complex hands on design of the body required the manufacturing expertise of the German coachbuilder Karmann to produce this iconic vehicle. When I found out there was a 7,500 mile Karmann Ghia for sale here in Texas I didn’t hesitate to contact the owner for more info. Turns out this car was originally purchased brand new by the Family that I got it from and wasn’t driven very much until it was parked in 1996. Now this is one of the most solid, original Karmann Ghia’s I’ve ever seen with an unmolested nose panel, complete original interior and the original engine with A/C still intact!( engine #  E577224). While this is a great VW find that had been stored in a secure garage the first half of its life, it has been battered by the Texas sun for the last 20 years as it was moved to the location where we found it exposed to the elements. The results are the finish you can see in the pics, a faded re-spray of the original color that should buff out to a glossy shine with a few nicks and scratches present from transporting and storing the last 20 or so years (see all pics, there is an area on the passenger side near the jack hole that has been dented by the previous owner while transporting it in the past). All of the trim is present and in good, usable condition (except the thin strip by the passenger jack hole) including the wheel trim rings and hubcaps! The interior is complete as well in mostly good condition with the sun having taken its toll on the rear deck vinyl as well as the dash and tops of the door panels (again see all pics). I brought it back to the Gas Monkey Garage where we installed a battery, some fresh fuel and the engine fired to life after a long hiatus. It runs well with no smoke or odd noises and idles smoothly, so I put some new tires on it so I could go for a ride! It drives well with a solid ride and smooth acceleration through the gears stopping with a good firm brake pedal (please note the brake fluid reservoir cap is missing). This car will need to be serviced completely before extended driving to insure safety and reliability (with our filming schedule we can’t perform the needed servicing). Underside pics reveal a pan that is solid and fairly rust free (the battery area has corroded through and there is minor rust visible in the underside photos). This is a rare opportunity to own an original, unmolested, low mileage example of the iconic Volkswagen Karmann Ghia! This awesome 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe is located in Dallas, Texas and the winning bidder may have the option of taking delivery here at the shop or we'll help with shipping logistics. Clear Original Texas Title in hand!  About Us

“I’ve been obsessed with cars since… I was born.”

Richard Rawlings had a car by age fourteen, and had gone through nearly twenty cars by the time he was out of high school. His father worked three jobs his whole life—two to make ends meet for the family, and one to buy toys. Neither a mechanic nor a fabricator, his father took pride in his car collection. Needless to say, this stayed with Richard.

Rawlings was always working, and always chasing pipe dreams. By twenty-one, he’d been a cop, a fireman, and a medic. But he wanted more. After a rough stint of sleeping on his sister’s couch, he got his act together and entered the world of trading sales. Here he solidified his business savvy, and went on to build an advertising and printing firm from the ground up. The company grew to become a “juggernaut” in the Dallas area. A mere four years later, the company sold, and with that money Gas Monkey Garage was born.

Aaron Kaufman worked at a shop Rawlings frequented, and loved the stuff Rawlings brought in for him. Kaufman always went above and beyond for him. When Gas Monkey opened, Rawlings called him up and asked if he wanted to work for him. The premise was simple: Rawlings wanted the fastest, most expensive, most badass hot rod shop to be found, with apparel and a show on Discovery to boot. Kaufman thought he was crazy, but signed on anyway. Eight years later, the shop is all that and more.

They owe their success to a strict business model. They don’t buy parts—only whole models without too much rust. Owing to his business background, Rawlings has a handle on the market, and knows the price he ought to pay. In ninety days or less, the job will be done, whether they start with a decent model or a carcass. Then it’s onto the next job without hesitation. If a finished car sits too long, Rawlings will sell it at a loss. He’s interested in a killer operation, not a stockpile.

Their roles within the shop are clear. Rawlings is first and foremost an entrepreneur. He wants to sell a style, push a brand, and make sure Gas Monkey Garage never stops growing. Kaufman runs the shop, armed with his mastery of mechanics, electrics, and fabrication. The dynamic is vital, the common ground being their mutual love of classic cars. Rawlings has always been an old soul when it comes to cars, and his style has brought in a steady flow of clientele who trust his no-B.S. methods. “Anyone can go out and buy a Ferrari.” Rawlings’ dream car? “A 1932 Ford Roadster—the holy grail of hot rods.”
