WOW--a beautiful 1978 Mercedes 300D with only has about 59,000 original miles!! This non-turbo four-door sedan diesel had a vegetable oil conversion 30,000 miles ago and has mostly run exclusively on vegetable oil since. It has been great to ride out the tide of high gasoline pricing by never having to fuel up at a gas station!

This car is not perfect but it is an exceptional example of one of the most popular automobiles that Mercedes Benz ever made. It has the original power windows & sunroof, and has a radio that accommodates music CDs. We upgraded the speakers but chose models that fit in the existing spaces so as not to cut into the doors, etc. This thirty-six-year-old vehicle is a classic and originally the Manufacturer’s Retail Price was over 20K; it is not in concourse condition but it is well kept. This cool classic beauty remarkably has ONLY 59,093 ORIGINAL MILES!!

EXTERIOR
The car has been repainted on each side below the door trim. There is a very small patch of surface rust right behind the front right fender and the rest of the car is rust free. The trim and chrome are good. Bumpers are good. There are a few minor chips and scratches. Door seals, weather-stripping, and grill are good. The headlamp housings are good and emblems are bright and in great condition. The overall exterior of the car is in very good condition. Underneath the car still has the original undercoating from the factory. It has newer brakes and tires.

INTERIOR
The interior to this car is very good—really, the photos tell it best! The dashboard has two very small cracks and is very good. The carpet is in great condition and there are plastic mats included. The Zebrano wood dash trim looks great with no cracks or peeling. The headliner is like new, the door panels and door storage bins are excellent. The instrument cluster is good. All of the switches are in great condition and are all in good working order.

MECHANICAL CONDITION
This car runs beautifully! The fuel filters, belts, air filter are new and the 3.0-liter, 5-cylinder diesel engine runs well. As is with these cars, you must wait for the glow plugs to do their thing—then the engine starts consistently and on the first attempt. The motor, chassis, and engine compartment are clean. The transmission shifts smoothly and the suspension is comfortable. The steering is tight and responsive without any play. New servo and A/C service is complete. Climate control works as it should.

ACCESSORIES
All power windows and the power sunroof work great. The central locking system works flawlessly from the driver’s door. There is a newer AM/FM CD stereo and the power antenna is in working condition. Gages, clock and dash instruments all work fine. Seats adjust fine. The glove compartment works as it should. One key fits front doors, rear hatch and glove compartment (with one spare Valet key included). Dome lights work well along with turn signals, headlights, high beams, fog lights, brake lights, parking lights, reverse lights, license plate lights, etc.

ISSUES
The driver’s side door support trim is missing below the seat belt retractor.

HISTORY
The VIN number is correct . Vehicles must be 1980 or newer to run a check. We already own a converted Mercedes and bought this one for our brother in HI whose family circumstances changed so he was unable to take ownership. This Mercedes was purchased in December 2007 from, we believe, the second owner in Seattle, WA.

FUEL

The vegetable oil conversion was done by Fatty Wagons (http://www.fattywagons.com). A conversion means the car can run on diesel fuel, vegetable oil, or a combination of the two. We used to get our oil from a couple of local restaurants that otherwise would need to pay to dispose of it; one Chinese and one Bar-B-Que. We used a fine filter to take out any debris from the fryer. We now use expired cooking oil that we buy in 55 gallon drums—and fill ‘er up at very little cost! Vegetable oil used as fuel is often described as waste vegetable oil (WVO) if it is oil that was discarded from a restaurant or straight vegetable oil (SVO) to distinguish it from biodiesel, although the term biodiesel is sometimes used interchangeably with diesel cars that were converted to run on vegetable oil.

You are encouraged to read up on how diesels Mercedes of this era are perfect for this conversion. For more information on alternative fuels, visit: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/fuel-consumption/vegetable-oil-fuel.htm
