Vehicle info

If you could travel back in time and buy a first class muscle car right off your favorite dealer's lot, what would it be? For many gearheads, a 1970 Chevelle SS that's fitted with an LS6 and Muncie 4-speed would top that list. Sure, there are still a few of those cars around. But with the prices they command, fully enjoying them is a risky endeavor. One of our favorite solutions to this problem is buying an authentic '70 Chevelle, stocking it with a red-hot big block and hitting the road. This incredible LS6 tribute combines a fresh, rotisserie restoration with a 'Rock Crusher' 4-speed, an arrow-straight profile and absolutely killer aesthetics. Want the ultimate A-body for sunny driving and weekend showing? Take a close look as this amazing drop-top!

Born at GM's Van Nuys manufacturing facility in December of 1969, this flecked and fluffed Chevelle is so fresh it could've rumbled off the assembly line during the twilight hours of yesterday's second shift. That's because the car recently benefitted from a frame-off, rotisserie restoration where its body was completely disassembled, sprayed in Astro Blue basecoat and topped with Classic White rally stripes. Once reassembly commenced, and better-than-factory panel alignment was attained throughout, that brilliant two-stage was rubbed and buffed into an excellent, mirror-like shine. And, after much hard work, this striking Super Sport rolled out of the restoration shop as a solid bowtie barnburner that looks simply spectacular.

Arguably the most popular year for the Chevelle line, 1970 models feature dual headlights, curvaceous quarters and a tidy greenhouse that gives the car an almost fastback appearance. At the front of this clean convertible, a familiar crossbar grille hangs a prominent "SS" emblem between authentic T3s, clear marker lamps and a fresh chrome bumper. Above that bumper, a functional cowl induction hood anchors new glass between traditional lanyards, pristine window trim and a correct vinyl roof that's fitted with a glass backlite. At the base of that roof, bright "SS454" badges combine with straight wheel frames, traditional door handles and flashy chrome mirrors to add visual detail to the car's liquid smooth profile. And at the back of that profile, a second chrome bumper centers a black Super Sport inlay between clear brake lamps, a classy "Chevelle by Chevrolet" trunk emblem and spotless stainless exhaust tips.

Although the 1970 Chevelle Super Sport's ferocious LS6 Turbo Fire V8 was conservatively rated at 450 horsepower, it actually punched the dyno somewhere north of 500. And, in addition to looking good enough to fool all but the most enlightened gearheads, this classic's era-correct 454 will scare the pants off anyone cocky enough to torque its carburetor cable. Engage the hood's carefully painted springs and you'll find a correct cowl induction system that's cleanly integrated into a completely finished, Satin Black frame. At the center of that frame, a correctly decaled, single-snorkel air cleaner forces oxygen into a coated Holley carburetor, which rides on a correct Winters intake. At the back of that intake, a traditional points distributor snakes sparks around mirror-like valve covers and restored exhaust manifolds via high quality AC Delco Premium Wires. At the sides of those wires, correct emissions hardware adds value and exclusivity. And in front of that hardware, GM hoses channel water to and from the radiator with the help of old school tower clamps. From its fresh Delco battery topper and correct Delco Moraine brake booster to its clean stainless fluid lines and reproduction grease marks, this Chevelle's engine bay is nicer than anything that left GM's factories. And I'm willing to bet it would take the average muscle car fan quite a bit of time to realize this car's Chevy Orange 454 wasn't bolted in on the assembly line over 40 years ago.

Naturally, this convertible's road-ready chassis has been restored to the same high standards as the aforementioned body panels and engine compartment. A nice coat of Satin Black paint provides a great foundation for a slew of factory-accurate details. Behind the stout big block, a familiar M22 'Rock Crusher' 4-speed sends power to a correct posi-traction rear end that's equipped with familiar 3.31 gears. Holding that killer drivetrain off the ground is a completely restored F41 heavy duty performance suspension that's equipped with thicker coils, heavy duty shocks, a larger diameter front sway bar, a standard rear sway bar, boxed rear control arms and beefy cross braces. Factory power steering combines with fully rebuilt power front disc and rear drum brakes to provide greatly improved turns and modern car stops. At the center of the suspension, fried dinosaurs travel through a fresh, true-dual exhaust system that's complete with factory replacement mufflers. At the corners of the floors, 14-inch Super Sport wheels spin old school F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around correct SS center caps. And, as expected, the bottom of this Chevelle is pristine in every way, with every square inch of the car's fully restored hardware completely detailed for show.

Inside this great looking classic you'll find a correct Ivory interior that's clean, polished and strikingly handsome! During the car's extensive restoration all the cockpit's weathered and worn panels were completely replaced with new or rebuilt pieces. Like-new seats provide a contrasting color scheme against the body's glossy paint and, along with slick door panels, feature show worthy stainless trim and fresh chrome handles. Between those seats, an attractive Black console centers a chrome Hurst shifter above classy trim, pristine carpet and thick floor mats. Above that console, a straight Black dash hangs a full gauge package beside a vintage AM/FM radio. In front of the driver, a rebuilt, tilting column spins a satin-spoke steering wheel around stainless-trimmed foot pedals. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk features a new mat, new decklid decals, and a correct jack and spare tire combo.

This sale of this impressive Chevy includes marketing materials and a vintage Owner's Manual.

It's pretty fair to throw the term "over-restored" at this car, but certainly not in a negative way. If you're going to spend a lot of valuable time restoring a classic, making it better-than-factory is completely understandable especially when it turns out like this. If the idea of owning an impossibly clean 454/4-speed Chevelle seems appropriate and appealing, don't miss the chance to put this Chevy in your garage!
