    The Classic Car Gallery is proud to present this absolutely stunning and unique 1974 Volkswagen Thing. This car has been finished in Avocado Satin over Black with removable Serape seat covers. This “Thing” was built to be the finest and most unique “Thing” in existence. The brainchild of Frank Saucedo, Head of General Motors design, it was conceived as a project for himself and his son. After Frank and his son decided to move on to another project it was purchased by Richard Griot, owner of Griot’s Garage. Photos of this Thing can be found in Griot’s publications and promotional material. The restoration started with a solid rust free Arizona car and was finished to the highest level with stunning attention to detail. 90% of all parts used in the build were new old stock and all hardware was refurbished original or replaced with stainless steel. The color match original Avocado with specially formulated Satin Finish was developed by PPG. The attention to detail is second to none. Her race built and tuned 1915cc engine produces approximately 120hp at 8.5:1 compression ratio and features the following components;

    • 69x94 Universal Super Case, Welded #3 Cylinder

    • 69mm Forged Chromoly Crankshaft

    • Forged Chromoly Uni-Tech Rods

    • Forged Chromoly Lightweight Flywheel

    • Manton Chromoly Push Rods .035 Thickness

    • 94mm Mahle Piston/Cylinder Kit

    • #2246 Cam 308 degree duration x 410 lift

    • 1.1 Ratio Rockers with Swivel Adjusters

    • Hardened Rocker Shafts

    • 044 Heads 40x35.5 Stainless Steel Valves

    • Single Hi-Rev Springs, Chromoly Retainers

    • Stage I Kennedy Pressure Plate w/ 200 Daycon Disc

    • Bosch 009 Distributor w/ Bosch Blue Coil

    • Dual 44 IDF Weber Carb Kit w. CB Hexbar Linkage

    • Doghouse Fan Shroud w/ Bosch Alternator

    • 26mm Oil Pump

    • Degreed Crank Pulley

    • Chromoly 8mm Head Studs

    • 94mm Teflon wrist pin buttons

    • Remote Spin On Oil Filter, Cooler and Fan

Her transmission is a Rancho Type 1 Pro with a Gene Berg short shift mated to an aluminium side cover Super Diff. Her front brakes were upgraded to CSP Discs with vented rotors matched with braided lines on all four wheels. A CSP Master was installed along with factory NOS Drums and shoes in the rear accompanied with all new hardware. Her entire suspension has been revised as well featuring front adjustable torsion tubes with urethane bushings, Fox reservoir shocks and a sway-a-way sway bar. The rear suspension features urethane bushings as well along with 930 cv’s, longer adjustable spring plates and sway-a-way torsion bars to match. Her stock seats were re-stuffed and re-wrapped in black vinyl and are currently sporting custom made Mexican blanket (Serape) seat covers. She has a brand new Bikini top from the “Thing Shop” and a custom rollcage built by Powler Sand rails. Her stereo is a testament to the attention to detail in the build, the rear speakers we originally 1940s ammo cases which were machined and lined with acoustic material. A high wattage amp accompanies the 4 speaker system which has hookup for MP3 or I-Pod. Her stock center gauge was restored by North Hollywood Speedo and the cluster includes VDO oil temp, mini tach, and oil pressure. This Thing is most certainly the finest on the market today, and quite possibly of all time. We have never heard or came across another that has had this level of creativity and build quality. IF YOUR ARE SEDUCED BY PRICE, THEN THIS ISN'T THE CAR FOR YOU. IF YOU WANT THE FINEST, THEN LOOK NO FURTHER. Please feel free to call 203 256 9800 or email Steven@classiccargallery.com if we can answer any of your questions.
