Vehicle info

While a lot of collectors are busy chasing 'Cudas and Road Runners, they're quick to overlook the Plymouth GTX. Available with the same ground-pounding big blocks as its brothers, the GTX was a refined alternative for the guy who wanted serious performance wrapped in line-topping class. This awesome GTX coupe, still equipped with its original 440 and heavy duty automatic, is the kind of classic that'll show, and go, just as well as its trophy winning brethren. The only difference is: it doesn't require multiple bank signatures to finance. So, if you're ready for some old school Detroit muscle that can be driven and enjoyed without fear, take a look at this stylish red Plymouth!

Since our sale includes official Chrysler Registry paperwork, there's little doubt about the legitimacy of this Auburn Hills classic. But, for the sake of being thorough, here's a detailed look at how the car rolled down Chrysler's St. Louis assembly line:

This slick Plymouth's high quality, professional restoration began with what appears to be a solid, rust-free body. That body was painstakingly stripped, sanded and massaged to better-than-new condition. Once those massaged panels were correctly aligned, a smooth coat of Chrysler code PP1 Matador Red paint was laid under bright rocker stripes. And the result is an ultra-straight, fully detailed pavement pounder that, thanks to its glossy pigment, literally glows under our bright showroom lighting.

Every bit of this Mopar's bright ornamentation is extremely clean, lending excellent detail to the aforementioned two-stage. And while it's really hard to determine whether all those baubles and bolt-ons are original, they certainly look nice! At the front of the car, a slatted grille hangs a bold "GTX" script between four halogen headlights, a good looking chrome bumper and crystal clear parking lamps. Above that grille, a war-painted hood centers subtle, "440" branded scoops behind a small "PLYMOUTH" emblem. Above that hood, like-new glass rides between a flashy chrome mirror, well-maintained trim and satin-finished windshield wipers. Below that glass, slab-sided body panels hang straight rocker guards and aggressive "GTX" emblems between dent-free wheel lips and old school Chrysler door handles. And at the back of the car, a pot metal valence anchors crystal clear tail lamps beside a fourth "GTX" emblem, a wide-set "PLYMOUTH" script, a second chrome bumper and spotless stainless exhaust tips.

Tilt the car's hood and you'll find a familiar, 440 cubic inch RB V8 that hangs a correct 2536430 casting number between a September 27th, 1967 casting date and correct "D440" assembly stamp. More popular than Chrysler's famed Hemi, and almost as feared as Plymouth's 440 6 BBL, this Super Commando V8 was designed to offer an exceptional combination of speed and civility. Oxygen transitions from a correctly decaled, organisol-coated air cleaner to a big Edelbrock carburetor. At the front of that carburetor, a traditional points distributor sequences fire into a fresh set of Belden plug wires. At the sides of that distributor, Turquoise valve covers perfectly contrast professionally restored exhaust manifolds. Cooling is supplied by a beefy Chrysler radiator that's cinched to pliable hoses via simple squeeze clamps. And power is provided by a reproduction Mopar red cap battery. Aesthetically, the car's bay looks spectacular, all the way from its orange carburetor spring to its Pentastar washer reservoir and red inner fenders. And functionally, one quick turn of the ignition results in a rumbling, high performance idle: hot or cold.

This Plymouth's chassis specs leave little question as to why Chrysler's B-body architecture was such a huge hit with performance car fans. Take a step under our lift and you'll find a tough ol' stoplight skeleton that's been maintained to the same high standards as the car's bright engine bay and shiny exterior panels. Behind the Super Commando, a correct A727 Torqueflite 3-speed twists a familiar Chrysler Sure Grip around correct, 3.23 gears. Below that proven powertrain, a factory-accurate suspension has been methodically rebuilt to include power steering, a correct sway bar and correct power drum brakes. Above that proven powertrain, solid floors are layered in weather-resistant undercoating and dressed in items like a modern fuel tank and leak-free fluid lines. Exhaust is handled by free-flowing, 2.5-inch pipes which jettison cooked dinosaurs via throaty Dynomax mufflers. And power grabs the pavement through chrome Magnum 500s, which spin meaty F70-15 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around stylish, self-revealing spinners.

Counter to today's obsession with technology and convenience, it seems old school American muscle cars only needed vinyl hides, a bit of wood trim and essential instrumentation to strike a perfect balance between 'instantly classic' and 'perpetually cool'. And when you open this coupe's solid doors, you'll find a correct cockpit that seamlessly melds legendary Mopar power with a stylish, no-nonsense driving environment. At the center of the floors, firm front bucket and rear bench seats are stuffed with good padding and topped with white, Plymouth-embossed covers. At the sides of those seats, weather-free door panels hang chrome-seated armrests below bright wood trim and correctly painted frames. At the bottom of those panels, good looking carpet is protected by standard floor mats. On top of that carpet, a chrome-trimmed console anchors a curved shifter between bright courtesy lamps. And opposite that console, a tight headliner is stretched around straight roof bows and a fully functional dome light. The car's classy dash hangs fully functional gauges beside an optional tach and vintage 8-track player. In front of the driver, a monochromatic steering wheel spins a silver horn ring around a color-keyed centerpiece. And behind the passengers, the car's fully restored trunk is authentic all the way down to its full-size spare, refurbished jack and centered decklid decal.

The sale of this super cool Plymouth includes a vintage Owner's Manual, an era-correct Carter carburetor and the aforementioned Chrysler Registry paperwork.

With the market focused on specialty Road Runners and big money 'Cudas, it's easy to overlook cars like this striking GTX. Not only is it a correct restoration with a price that's substantially lower than most finicky garage fodder, it's also an underappreciated rarity that mixes top notch Plymouth performance with increased approachability. If you're ready to relive the golden age of Detroit in a muscle car you can actually enjoy, don't miss the chance to bring home this awesome Mopar!
