Vehicle info

Nicknamed The Great Pumpkin, this magazine-featured Coronet is, in its purest form, an unabashedly ruthless street fighter. Free from all the nonsense add-ons that have increasingly clouded our driving experience for the better part of four decades, the car is tailor-made to be one of the most exclusive and uninhibited classics on American roads. And, in addition to having a correct Hemi/A727 drivetrain - which makes it one of only 39 '69 Coronet R/Ts originally optioned that way, this Dodge is the ONLY known example dressed in a killer combination of Hemi Orange and gloss Black paint. If you're in the market for some highly correct, investment grade metal that'll continue to rise in value, here's your next prospect!

With an official inspection and Chrysler Registry paperwork provided by Galen Govier, there's no questioning this coupe's well-restored authenticity. Here's a detailed look at how the car rolled down Chrysler's St. Louis assembly line:

The beneficiary of a four year rotisserie restoration, this stunning Dodge is one of the finest Coronets on the planet! When a dedicated group of professionals rebuild a car from beginning to end, it displays a consistency of vision and quality that's simply unmatched. And, judging by the spectacular looks of this slick Mopar's body, everything from welding its new passenger quarter to blocking its surfaces, spraying its basecoat and buffing its mirror-like clear was handled by one very meticulous team. Recently, the car's tough, slab-sided profile was once again freshened and finessed until it lined up better than most showroom-new offerings. And today, that profile's correctly striped two-stage accurately reproduces Chrysler's vivid Hemi Orange finish while providing a wet-look shine that's only achieved with decades of highly advanced paint technology.

Dodge's Coronet was a little plainer than its Charger sibling, but a lot of people like that contrast and dig the model's super clean looks. At the front of this coupe, a body-width, stainless-trimmed grille hangs a bright "R/T" emblem and four clear headlights above a mirrored bumper and clear, round parking lamps. Above that grille, a correct Ramcharger hood, which wears small "HEMI" emblems, flows to tinted glass that's sandwiched between fresh stainless trim, silver stainless wipers and glossy Black paint. At the sides of that hood, subtly sculpted panels hang a chrome driver's mirror and familiar Chrysler door handles between dent-free rocker trim and correct quarter scoops. And at the back of those panels, a Satin Black valence frames factory-fresh tail lights between a bright "DODGE" script, a second "R/T" emblem, a second bumper and small, stainless exhaust tips.

Toss the car's light hood and you'll find a correct, 426 cubic inch Hemi V8 that's dated to the 1970 model year. As Dodge's top option for power hungry gearheads, Chrysler's legendary elephant block utilizes cast iron heads, an oversquare bore, a forged steel crank, forged steel rods, forged aluminum pistons and a hydraulic cam to twist stout 10.25 to 1 compression into 425 horsepower and 490 lb./ft. of torque. All that high performance hardware spins in a glossy orange block that hangs textured valve covers over correct, low-restriction exhaust manifolds. A perfect mixture of fuel and air is supplied by correct Carter carburetors and a correct aluminum intake. Compression is sparked by high quality Chrysler Electronic Suppression cables, which are snapped onto a traditional points distributor. And resultant combustion is cooled by a big, 26-inch radiator that's fitted with fresh hoses and old school squeeze clamps. Visually, the car's Hemi Orange engine compartment is clean and understated. The big mill performs as well as it ever has. And naturally, details like factory decals, a Mopar battery and a familiar Chrysler washer reservoir have been professionally restored or completely replicated.

With pavement scorching torque and excellent low end acceleration, this Dodge certainly has the performance to back up its sinister looks. Behind the legendary Chrysler big block you'll find a correct A727 Torqueflite 3-speed. Behind that transmission, a rugged 8.75-inch rear end spins a Sure Grip differential around friendly, 3.23 gears. And below that star studded drivetrain, a heavy duty front torsion bar and rear leaf suspension has been completely rebuilt to include correct manual steering and correct drum brakes. The car's over-restored floors have been finished in a glossy layer of Hemi Orange two-stage and dressed with everything from a big stainless fuel tank to fresh stainless fluid lines. Exhaust is handled by free-flowing, 2.5-inch pipes which send cooked dinosaurs through an H-style crossover, Chrysler-branded mufflers and Chrysler-branded resonators. And power flows to the ground through standard steel wheels, which spin traditional F70-15 Goodyear Speedway red lines around more Hemi Orange paint.

This Coronet's fender tag says it was originally equipped with a Chrysler code X Black interior, and it has been restored just as the factory intended, to provide the kind of jaw-dropping good looks you just can't find in today's cars. The rear bench and front bucket seats have been stuffed with firm padding and topped with high quality covers. At the sides of those seats, fresh door panels hang new armrests under fresh stainless trim and correct Black frames. At the bottom of those seats, like-new carpet centers a chrome shifter inside a correct, wood-trimmed console and stylish rubber floor mats. And at the top of those seats, a tight black headliner stretches between fresh sail panels and a fully functional dome lamp. The car's dash, which appears to be original, hangs fully rebuilt gauges beside an authentic Chrysler Solid State radio. In front of the driver, a wood-rimmed wheel spins around a rebuilt steering column. And behind the cockpit, a new trunk pan props a full-size spare tire over a correct jack and reproduction mat.

Not surprisingly, this classic has been showered in accolades. In addition to feature articles in both Mopar Collector's Guide and Muscle Car Review, the car scored First Place at the 2007 Mopars at the Strip show in Las Vegas, Nevada, and earned an Award of Distinction at Chrysler Performance West Spring Fling XXIV in Van Nuys, California.
