Cadillac dropping trims, powertrains for 2020 CT6
Wed, Jun 19 2019First reported by CarsDirect and later confirmed with Cadillac, the CT6 order book will see some changes for 2020. The luxurious American sedan is losing trims and losing engines but gaining standard equipment. For the 2020 model year, Cadillac is distilling the CT6's seven different trims down to three: Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Platinum, all three of which have new standard features. The Luxury trim gets the Driver Awareness and Convenience Package. Premium Luxury benefits the most with Super Cruise, the Rear Seat Package, the Comfort and Tech Package, and the 34-speaker Bose Panaray Sound System. The Platinum gets new unique 20-inch wheels, and the V-Series (considered a different model) gets the Driver Assist Package. As we've previously reported, Cadillac will also be reducing the number of available engine options. The 2.0-liter turbo engine has already been dropped, and the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 is next. For 2020, the CT6 will only offer the choice of the 3.6-liter V6 on Luxury and Premium Luxury trims and the 4.2-liter, twin-turbocharged "Blackwing" V8. All models and trims come standard with all-wheel drive. Cadillac has also confirmed pricing to Autoblog. Including destination charges, the Luxury model would start at $59,990, the Premium Luxury would start at $75,490, the Platinum will start at $97,490, and the V-Series will start at $95,890. Overall, prices go up due to the removal of the 2.0-liter model and more standard equipment, though the cheapest model on the configurator right now is $63,590. On the high end, the 2019 CT6 Platinum with the twin-turbocharged engine starts at $87,790. We'll update when this all goes official. Man trapped in Cadillac XLR for 14 hours after battery dies
Thu, Sep 13 2018A 75-year old Cleveland man ended up trapped in his 2006 Cadillac XLR for 14 hours last month, according to a story reported by the Detroit Free Press. The owner of the car, Peter Pyros, hopped into his roadster to back out onto his driveway, but he quickly learned that the battery was dead. He was "trapped" because the doors use an electric button to activate the door latch to open the door. Since the battery was dead, the buttons did nothing. Now, GM planned for an eventuality like this by placing a manual door release handle on the ground next to the seat. It's marked with a red diagram of the driver-side door opening. There's also a section about it in the owner's manual. The only problem here, was that Pyros says he didn't know the release was there, and he didn't have his owner's manual in the car. Because of this, Pyros may not have made it out alive if not for a neighbor coming to his rescue. "I came to the conclusion that I was going to die ... I was at peace with it. I asked God to help me twice, then I said, 'OK, God if this is the way I'm supposed to die, I will die,'" Pyros said to reporters. There's every chance he could have died in the car, too. Temperatures in Cleveland hit 77 degrees the day he was in the car, and he said it was unbearably hot and difficult to breathe after only 30 minutes sealed inside. Pyros reportedly tried yelling, pounding on and even trying to break the car's windows without success. At one point, Pyros wrote a note to his nephew explaining what happened if he ended up dying. What eventually saved him was a curious neighbor who came to investigate after he noticed his garage door was still open late at night. His neighbor called the police after he found him in the car, and emergency personnel actually ended up charging his car's battery up enough to get the electric door release to work. Of course, after everything settled down, there are now lawyers involved. They're going after GM, with an argument accusing the automaker of not making the emergency latch more obvious both in the car and in the owner's manual. GM doesn't appear to be having any of it. Here's its statement on the matter: "Because this varies by make and model, drivers should review the door lock section of their owner's manual, and follow up with their dealer or customer assistance center if they have any questions," GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson wrote to the Free Press. This type of door release isn't particularly uncommon for GM vehicles.
GM Ultium tech can scavenge heat from everywhere, even you
Mon, Apr 25 2022GM likes to give us tidbits about its Ultium platform from time to time, and today it’s telling us about the platformÂ’s ability to capture waste heat from the propulsion system. In addition to capturing from the propulsion system, it can also capture humidity from both inside and outside the vehicle and even from passengersÂ’ body heat. Yes, you, your family and/or your friends are a usable heat source as far as GM EVs are concerned. It then deploys the heat in an advantageous way. If at this point, youÂ’re screaming, "Heat pump!" youÂ’d be right. WeÂ’re talking about an elaborate heat pump system that GM is using for its Ultium-based vehicles. Every Ultium-based GM vehicle gets this system that is covered by 11 patents and four publications. The waste heat it collects is used in a number of ways, but its primary use is to heat the cabin quickly and efficiently. GM claims it can heat the cabin of its Ultium-based vehicles quicker than vehicles with traditional internal combustion engines. Plus, when put to use, GM claims that using the heat pump provides its EVs with up to 10% more range than theyÂ’d have without. Beyond heating the cabin, the heat pump is capable of putting waste heat to use by preheating the battery prior to charging so that you can charge quicker. The system can even cool the propulsion system in preparation for Watts to Freedom (WTF) launch control starts. GM says this was vital in helping the Hummer EV achieve its bonkers 0-60 mph time of about 3 seconds. “Having a ground-up EV architecture gives us the freedom to build in standard features like UltiumÂ’s energy recovery capabilities,” said Doug Parks, GM executive VP of global product development, purchasing and supply chain. “This helps us squeeze more efficiency, performance and overall customer benefit out of our EVs.” GM says itÂ’s been developing heat pump technology since the EV1 and its heat pump. This is the modern evolution of that technology, and GM says itÂ’s going to be implemented in every Ultium-based vehicle as a standard feature.
