GM Super Cruise is evolving into Ultra Cruise, for hands-off city driving
Wed, May 20 2020GM has a "big team" working on an advanced version of its hands-free driving assistance system, Super Cruise, that will expand its capability beyond highways and apply it to city streets, the automaker's vice president of global product development Doug Parks said Tuesday. GM is also continuing to improve its existing Super Cruise product, Parks said during a webcasted interview at Citi’s 2020 Car of the Future Symposium. "As we continue to ratchet up Super Cruise, we continue to add capability and not just highway roads," Parks said, adding that a separate team is working on the hands-free city driving product known internally as "Ultra Cruise." "We're trying to take that same capability off the highway," he said. "Ultra cruise would be all of the Super Cruise plus the neighborhoods, city streets and subdivisions. So Ultra Cruise's domain would be essentially all driving, all the time." Parks was quick to add that this would not be autonomous driving. Advanced driving assistance systems have become more capable, but they still require a human driver to take control and to be paying attention. "What we're not saying is that Ultra Cruise will be fully autonomous 100% of the time, although that could be one of the end games," Parks said. Parks didn't provide a timeline for when Ultra Cruise might be available. A GM spokesperson said in a statement after his interview that the company continues to expand its hands-free driver assistance system technology across its vehicle portfolio and has "teams looking at how we can expand the capabilities to more scenarios." GM said it "does not have a name or anything specific to announce today, but stay tuned." This new Ultra Cruise feature would put it in competition with Tesla's Autopilot advanced driving system, which is largely viewed as the most capable on the market today. Tesla's "full self-driving" package, a more capable version of Autopilot, can now identify stop signs and traffic lights and automatically slows the car to a stop on approach. This feature is still considered to be in beta. GM's Super Cruise uses a combination of lidar map data, high-precision GPS, cameras and radar sensors, as well as a driver attention system, which monitors the person behind the wheel to ensure theyÂ’re paying attention. Unlike TeslaÂ’s Autopilot driver assistance system, users of Super Cruise do not need to have their hands on the wheel. However, their eyes must remain directed straight ahead.
2022 Cadillac CT4 Review | Blackwing, price, mpg, pictures
Thu, Dec 2 2021Cadillac’s most compact and frugal four-door is perhaps its most compelling, as evidenced by its place among our favorite sport sedans. This small sedan ostensibly competes with the growing class of sub-compact luxury sedans, yet its rear-drive layout and sophisticated chassis are more akin to European offerings a size larger. The CT4Â’s chassis makes an excellent case for itself against the benchmark BMW 3 Series, and the Blackwing adds M3-like power to that already-phenomenal platform. It even has a standard manual gearbox. So itÂ’s compelling, but is it competitive? The CT4 is smaller, with a cramped back seat and rinky-dink trunk. Its cabin quality is lower and its engines (including the BlackwingÂ’s twin-turbo V6) less refined. Yet, it is sufficiently cheaper to justify all of the above. For the dwindling few who still prize communicative steering and an unflappable suspension in their entry-level luxury sedan, the CT4 is a terrific choice – no matter what you compare it to. The CT4 was new for 2020 but due to global constraints and dwindling sedan sales, it has been produced and sold in limited numbers. Along with its larger sibling, the CT5, it is expected to be discontinued entirely by the middle of the decade. Cadillac has confirmed that the Blackwing models will be its final internal-combustion halo sedans. Interior & Technology  |  Passenger & Cargo Space  |  Performance & Fuel Economy What it's like to drive  |  Pricing & Features  |  Crash Ratings & Safety Features What's new for 2022? The CT4 lineup gains a new halo model for 2022: The CT4-V Blackwing. It packs a twin-turbo V6 with enough power to take on the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63 and even comes standard with a manual transmission. Other updates are few and far between. Blaze Orange Metallic (as seen on the Blackwing photo up top) has been added to the exterior color selections, and Super Cruise packages will be available later in the Â’22 modelÂ’s production run. Note that due to the ongoing chip shortage, Cadillac may not be able to order a CT4 with a heated steering wheel for the remainder of the model year. What's the CT4 interior and in-car technology like? We've criticized the design and quality of other Cadillac interiors, and although the CT4's is awfully similar to those, its lower price and market positioning make it far more competitive and, well, palatable.
2021 Cadillac Escalade Super Cruise Review | Road trip royalty
Tue, Jul 6 2021There is no better road trip vehicle on sale today than a Super Cruise–equipped 2021 Cadillac Escalade. So long as you have the money to put fuel in it, the Escalade will reward you with the most relaxing and comfortable experience in the business. ItÂ’s simple, really. Sitting back and not having to even worry about touching the steering wheel or pedals for hundreds of miles at a time does the trick. Every other driving-assistance system out there requires some degree of steering wheel interaction — even TeslaÂ’s Autopilot — but CadillacÂ’s ingenious driver-monitoring system solves the problem. You might be wondering why IÂ’m writing a full review dedicated solely to Super Cruise. To answer your question, itÂ’s because GM just rolled out its biggest update to the system ever. I also was planning to drive from Michigan to Buffalo, N.Y., which would put it through a lengthy highway test over a route that is almost entirely Super Cruise compatible — remember, Super Cruise only works on highways that GM has mapped with LiDAR technology. Super Cruise launched in the Cadillac CT6, a model that is no longer in the Cadillac lineup. This updated, next-gen Super Cruise is rolling out in multiple new Cadillacs, as well as Chevys and soon GMC products, too. Its first home, though, is in the recently redesigned Cadillac Escalade, a perfect product to showcase the systemÂ’s impressive abilities. So, whatÂ’s new? The big feature update is something called “Lane Change on Demand.” Just tap a turn signal stalk with the system activated, and the Escalade will change lanes all on its own. A little graphic pops up in the instrument cluster that says the car is “looking to make sure itÂ’s safe.” It then begins to move over. Once itÂ’s done, another graphic informs you that the lane change was successfully completed. Moving over one lane takes about twice as long as a human driver would, but exercising caution with automation seems like a wise move. Changing lanes mid-curve works just fine on gentle turns. The Escalade will attempt to change lanes on tighter-radius curves, but it took more than 10 seconds to complete the change on a couple occasions, which just doesnÂ’t feel safe or inspire confidence. I did encounter one big issue with the auto lane-change system, but it was unrelated to the systemÂ’s performance. A “check right rear turn lamp” warning popped up about 100 miles into the trip.
