1975 Cadillac Sedan DeVille Slicktop

I love a good estate car and that's exactly what this is.  I purchased the car from the owner's grandson who pulled the car from her garage after 15 years of laying dormant.  With a little work (outlined below), the car came back to life and drives just as a 79,000 original mile car should. The idle is a little rougher than it should be and I've outlined what I've done to troubleshoot that in the mechanical section. I'm not going to call this car rare, but it is a strange one due to the slicktop and sparse options (no passenger side mirror, no tilt, no cruise, no twilight sentinel, no rear defog, etc.). I have maintenance records going back to 1977, the original warranty information card, and original owner's manual.

I've tried to shoot every angle of this car and I've also outlined her condition more specifically in separate sections below. Videos of the car running and driving can be found at the bottom of the page. If you have any questions or need more pictures, feel free to reach out: Clay: (512) 653-0773

Exterior

As you can see, this is a very aesthetically beautiful car (as long as you don't mind the Mandarin Orange Poly paint). The body paint is completely original (and very nice) with no accidents or repaints. The trim on the passenger side has been rubbed and there is one noticeable thin spot in the paint on the passenger side of the hood (both issues are pictured in the blemishes section at the bottom of the page). The back fillers were replaced long ago and they are what I would call a very cheap set of fiberglass reproductions (and there is a crack in the passenger side rear tail light filler).  I do have the chrome strips from the original fillers (those come with the car).  All glass is nice and uncracked and all weatherstripping is in excellent shape.  The only rust on the car exists on the driver's side rear door (surface rust on the inside of the door skin -- pictured in the blemishes section below) and a quarter sized area on the passenger side of the rear window (surface rust also pictured in the blemishes section below).

Interior

The interior is also all original and only shows minor wear. The original seat belt warnings are present on both front seat belts and all six seat belts function fine (no sticking tensioners, etc.)  The headliner is perfect and the dashboard is without cracks. The only tear in the interior is in the center of the bottom leather in the rear (see pictures -- it's about the size of a pea). Carpet is original and untorn with only minor blemishes. Door panels are in decent shape with two cracks in the vinyl section above the door handle on the driver's side front and a hole in the armrest (size of a dime) in the driver's side rear armrest. 8-track radio combo powers on, power antenna works well, but you can only barely hear the radio at full volume (not sure what's wrong -- haven't looked). Steering wheel is uncracked, but the wood insert strip deteriorated beyond repair and was removed.  I still have the insert strip and it comes with the car (it's only translucent plastic now -- the wood grain has all fallen off). Power seat and power locks work flawlessly.

Mechanical

This car runs, drives, and stops well. Car does not leak any fluids and the transmission is smooth without any slipping. Brakes are firm, easy, and stop straight.  No driveline vibrations at high speeds and the steering tracks straight and tight. As mentioned in the videos, the car idles a bit rougher than it should and stumbles just off idle.  I have not rebuilt the carburetor, but I suspect the accelerator pump needs to be replaced.  As far as the rough idle is concerned, I did the usual maintenance items (listed below), but it still just idles rougher than it should (see the videos). Power is great and she is smooth as can be at speed (it's just idle and right off idle). Climate control works correctly, but the A/C is the original R12 system and is not charged.  Compressor does engage, but I've disconnected the clutch pigtail to avoid running it without a charge (since that will eventually destroy the compressor).

Maintenance Performed:

  • New spark plugs
  • New spark plug wires
  • New water pump
  • New spark control module
  • New coil
  • New tires
  • New radiator hoses
  • New alternator
  • New fuel pump
  • Engine oil changed (Wix filter, 10w-30)
  • Transmission serviced (filter, fluid, pan-off service)

Blemishes

Cadillac XT5 confirmed for 2016 as next-gen SRX

Wed, Jun 10 2015

Cadillac's entire lineup of 2016 models gets a major infotainment upgrade this summer with improvements to CUE and integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's one major exception for now, though. The SRX retains the old system until its all-new generation, called the XT5, debuts early in the 2016 calendar year. "When we transition into all new product lines, we will evolve the naming convention to suit the new classification we have announced. So SRX becomes XT5 next year," company spokesman David Caldwell said in an email to Autoblog. Earlier spy shots and rumors suggest the XT5 might be offered with a turbocharged four-cylinder and naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines, plus a nine-speed automatic transmission. For the rest of Cadillac's models, CarPlay arrives with the launch of the 2016 vehicles, and Android Auto joins later. Using either of them requires a connection via USB, and they add a new projection icon on the CUE screen. Once activated, both systems integrate with driver's phone and incorporate features like navigation, music, and contacts. They can also accept voice commands. Even for those that don't want to hook up a smartphone, CUE should work better thanks to a more powerful processor. Start-up times for the infotainment system are expected to be faster, and Cadillac claims that it's also more responsive for voice recognition, navigation searches, and media. The navigation interface is simplified, as well. The Escalade, CTS, and XTS can now be ordered with a 360-degree camera system to display on the screen. Cadillac Enhances Phone Integration for 2016 Models with Apple CarPlay, CUE Upgrades APPLE CARPLAY AVAILABLE AT LAUNCH; ANDROID AUTO COMING LATER IN MODEL YEAR 2015-06-09 NEW YORK – Cadillac's 2016 model year products will feature enhanced connectivity and control, including the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the predominant new systems for in-car phone integration. These additions are part of a broader enhancement of CUE, Cadillac's user experience, with new features and a faster, streamlined operation. Apple CarPlay will debut in 2016 Cadillac models featuring CUE's 8-in multi-touch screen except the SRX Crossover, a model that will move to an all-new generation in early 2016. Android Auto is expected to be phased into 2016 production at a later date. The 2016 model year will begin this summer.

Cadillac prices new ATS-V from $61,460*

Tue, Feb 10 2015

It's official, Art & Science students: Cadillac has opened the order books for the new ATS-V, and while it was at it, has told us how much we should expect to shell out for the privilege. Pricing starts at $61,460 for the 2016 Cadillac ATS-V sedan (*plus tax, title, license, dealer fees and any optional equipment). Go for the sleeker (but less practical) ATS-V coupe and you'll be looking at $63,660 (with the same conditions). For all that scratch, you'll be looking at a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 driving 455 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, for a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 189 miles per hour. The ATS-V also features Brembo brakes, magnetorheological dampers, launch control and rev-matching with no-lift shifting. Cadillac has still yet to tell us how much gas its new performance model will guzzle, but it's got time before production gears up in the spring and the online configuration tool launches in April. Cadillac Opens Ordering for 2016 ATS-V Dual-purpose performance luxury compact designed for the track, touring 2015-02-10 DETROIT – Cadillac dealers have begun accepting orders for the 2016 ATS-V – the brand's inaugural luxury compact performance car starting production this spring. Available in sedan and coupe forms, the twin-turbocharged ATS-V offers a dual-purpose luxury performance experience: a car with true track capability straight from the factory with sophisticated road manners. Powered by the segment's highest-output six-cylinder engine – the Cadillac Twin Turbo rated at 455 horsepower (339 kW) and 445 lb-ft of torque (603 Nm) – the ATS-V achieves 0-60 performance in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 189 mph. The Cadillac Twin Turbo engine is backed by a six-speed manual – with Active Rev Match, no-lift shifting and launch control – or a paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission featuring launch control and Performance Algorithm Shift. "The V-Series is the ultimate expression of Cadillac's re-ignited product substance and the passion at the core of our brand," said Johan de Nysschen, Cadillac president. "The ATS-V expands the V-Series lineup, bringing a new kind of performance character to Cadillac. Lightweight, agile and potent, the ATS-V will make an ideal pairing with the larger and even more powerful all-new 2016 CTS-V midsize sedan, which arrives later this summer," he said.

GM faces possible class action lawsuit over 8-speed transmission

Thu, Apr 25 2019

General Motors has been hit with a class-action lawsuit from owners who allege the eight-speed automatic transmission found in several rear-wheel-drive Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC models between the 2015 and 2019 model years has a defect that causes the vehicles to hesitate and jerk when accelerating or slowing down. The lawsuit was posted to ClassAction.org and spotted by GM Authority. Problems with GM's Hydra-Matic 8L90 and 8L45 transmissions have been well-documented on Internet forums and via complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with many reporting damage to their vehicles. The lawsuit was first filed in December in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida but appears to have been transferred recently to New York. Autoblog sought comment from Theodore Leopold, the lead attorney for the plaintiffs. "These transmissions have a common defect," the complaint reads. "Drivers attempting to accelerate or decelerate their cars feel a hesitation, followed by a significant shake, shudder, jerk, clunk, or 'hard shift' when the vehicle's automatic transmission changes gears." The problem also occurs when the vehicles accelerate in a single gear, without shifting, the plaintiffs allege. "Drivers have reported that the shift is sometimes so violent, they feel as though they have been hit by another vehicle." The problem is believed to center on the transmission, torque converter or both. The complaint says it causes undue friction, causing hydraulic systems and gears to function improperly and sometimes leaves metal shavings throughout the transmission, leading to costly repairs and replacement of parts or the entire transmission. It says GM has known about the problems since shortly after it introduced the transmissions, and has issued 13 technical service bulletins, none of which have resolved the problem. GM declined to comment on the lawsuit. The plaintiffs say GM should have warned consumers about the issues and covered repairs under each vehicle's three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. They're seeking statewide classes in at least six states: California, Florida, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma and Texas.
