Interior is in almost mint condition, with all electronics working fine Cadillac's flagship has been constantly evolving, and the 1997 edition of the Seville Touring Sedan (STS) is no exception. Under its timeless skin are major structural improvements. Inside, comfort, safety, and convenience have been enhanced. Most importantly, the 1997 STS is a showpiece that brings aerospace technology to the roadway. The 1997 STS builds on Cadillac's heritage of innovative use of chassis control electronics to become one of the most technologically advanced automobiles ever made. Increasingly sophisticated real-time control of shock absorber damping and integration of damping, traction control, braking, and steering systems led to the Integrated Chassis Control System (ICCS) in 1995. The ICCS subsystems have evolved to sense and react to road texture and conditions more quickly. The Stabilitrak stability-enhancement system is the major Cadillac engineering development for 1997.
Stabilitrak adds a yaw rate sensor and lateral accelerometer to the ICCS system. The main ICCS computer compares inputs from these aerospace devices with inputs from the Magnasteer magnetically- assisted steering system to detect impending loss of control, and activates the appropriate front brake to bring the car back in line. Stabilitrak works with the driver, and increases confidence without leading to overconfidence.
The STS is quiet, comfortable, and composed on the street. On the track it is quick and agile. At the limits of traction, Stabilitrak really works.
APPEARANCE: Like a well-designed suit, the STS was styled well when it was introduced and so still looks good today. It looks smaller and lighter than it really is. Crisp, angular edges and curved surfaces provide visual balance. At the front is the traditional Cadillac egg-crate grille, body colored on the STS. It is flanked by rectangular headlamps. Body-colored bumper fascias continue on the lower sides as protective molding. The long, broad hood is gently sculpted, and character lines break up the otherwise large expanse of the sides. The passenger cabin has a steeply-raked windshield and backlight, thin pillars, and large side windows. Window trim is black, and chrome is conspicuously absent except for optionally chromed spoked alloy wheels.
COMFORT: The STS is far more European in interior appointments than earlier Cadillacs. No plush, overstuffed, quilted leather sofas and velour brocade here. Just a tasteful application of leather, wood trim, and quality fabric. Dark leather above wood trim above lighter leather on the doors and instrument panel is elegant and graceful. All amenities expected in a flagship luxury car are standard equipment on the STS. The power-operated front seats have been redesigned for improved comfort and crash protection, and a greater number of seat position, mirror position, climate control and audio system settings may now be programmed. Changes to the climate control panel and driver information center make both easier to use. Instrumentation and control design and placement are proper and functional. The contoured rear seat is spacious for two, and will hold three if necessary. The commodious, low liftover trunk has a long-standing Cadillac feature: there is no need to slam the lid closed. Gently close it, and servomechanisms will finish the job.
SAFETY: In addition to Stabilitrak, the 1997 Cadillac STS has all of the expected safety features, including 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction control, safety cage construction, dual air bags, and daytime running lights.
ROADABILITY: Like the best European luxury/sports sedans, the Cadillac STS feels small, light, and nimble on the road. Redesigned suspension components and the Integrated Chassis Control System (ICCS) give a ride that is comfortable around town and composed at speed. The Stabilitrak traction- enhancement system keeps the STS friendly and safer at its limits, and increases those limits as well. It is a Cadillac that can run with the best Europe has to offer.
PERFORMANCE: The Northstar System is the secret to the abilities of the STS and other front-wheel drive Cadillacs. More than just the 4.6-liter, 300-horsepower dual overhead cam, alloy V8, the Northstar System encompasses a fast, smooth, efficient 4-speed automatic transmission, balanced suspension and steering components, and the electronic systems that allow all subsystems to interact in harmony. The STS is quick, fast, and fuel-efficient.
CONCLUSIONS: The 1997 Cadillac STS combines advanced electronic technology with a state-of-the-art engine and chassis that make it a worthy competitor to any luxury car made.

Junkyard Gem: 1987 Cadillac Cimarron
Sat, Mar 20 2021The General's Cadillac Division hit its all-time sales record during the 1973 model year, with 304,839 cars sold. Then the OPEC oil embargo in the fall of that year caused oil prices to triple, while simultaneously accelerating several negative trends in the American economy. In the aftermath, sales of imported luxury cars surged, the President resigned, the communists conquered South Vietnam, and Cadillac introduced a compact car based on the proletariat Chevrolet Nova. Sales of those Sevilles — which cost better than triple the price of their Nova siblings — proved strong, and so it seemed to make sense to create a Cadillac-ized version of the Nova's replacement: the front-wheel-drive Chevrolet Cavalier, which debuted for the 1982 model year. Thus was the Cadillac Cimarron born, and that's what we've got for today's Junkyard Gem. The Cimarron stayed in production for the 1982 through 1988 model years, but sales were strongest for the first few years and so the 1982-83 cars make up the bulk of my Cimarron junkyard finds. This very clean '87 in a Denver-area yard is a rare late-production car. Although the Cimarron was by far the swankiest GM J-Body ever made, its Cavalier ancestry was unmistakable. While the Nova-based Seville caused some grumbling over the cheapening of the Cadillac brand, the Cimarron inspired widespread anger and loathing among those who love cars. Even with a leather interior and nice audio system, the Cimarron still caused pain to its owners who saw cheapo Cavaliers (and Pontiac J2000s and Olds Firenzas) looking nearly identical at a glance yet costing far less. In 1987, the list price on a new Cimarron started at $15,032 (about $35,550 in 2021 dollars). The cheapest Cavalier listed at $7,255 that year, though the loaded Cavalier RS sedan with V6 engine started at $9,159. For 1982 through 1986, the base powertrain in the Cimarron consisted of a 1.8-liter or 2.0-liter four-cylinder — yes, the same double-digit-horsepower engines that went into Cavaliers — paired with a four- or five-speed manual transmission. The 2.8-liter V6, rated at 125 horses, was an option in those cars and became standard equipment in the 1987 and 1988 Cimarrons.
GM Super Cruise beats Tesla Autopilot again in latest hands-free test
Wed, Oct 28 2020DETROIT — General Motors' Super Cruise once again edged Tesla's Autopilot in an evaluation of 17 vehicles equipped with active driving assistance systems (ADAS) by Consumer Reports, the testing organization said on Wednesday. A Tesla Model Y fitted with Autopilot finished "a distant second," the group said, to a Cadillac CT6 equipped with Super Cruise, which GM is rolling out to more than 20 vehicles — including its new Hummer electric pickup truck — over the next three years. Safety and insurance researchers have frequently warned of the risks of consumers overestimating ADAS systems' abilities, a misconception increased by some automakers calling their products Autopilot, ProPilot or Co-Pilot. In 2018, the Cadillac CT6 with Super Cruise scored higher than a Tesla Model 3 with Autopilot, in a Consumer Reports test of just four vehicles equipped with ADAS. In the latest test, conducted this summer on a track and on public roads, the Cadillac scored 69 points out of a possible 100, while the Tesla scored 57. A Lincoln Corsair equipped with Ford's Co-Pilot 360 system, finished third with 52. The critical difference in the Super Cruise system is a driver-facing infrared camera to make sure he or she is paying attention to the road and is ready to take over manual control when necessary, said Kelly Funkhouser, head of connected and automated vehicle testing at Consumer Reports. The group noted that Autopilot can shut off abruptly in some situations, while Super Cruise did a better job of notifying the driver when the system is disengaging. In recent European safety testing, a Tesla Model 3 with Autopilot placed sixth out of 10 systems, getting high marks for performance and ability to respond to emergencies, but falling short on its ability to maintain a driverÂ’s focus on the road. Cadillac partners with Saks Fifth Avenue for limited-edition ELR
Fri, 08 Nov 2013There's no softening the blow with this one - this is the limited edition 2014 Cadillac ELR Saks Fifth Avenue Edition, and it costs $89,500, including $995 for destination. The special model, limited to just 100 units, is part of a holiday season collaboration between Cadillac and luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue. In addition to the ELR, there will also be a special "Frozen Escalade" window display at the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store near Rockefeller Center in New York City, which will feature the 2015 Escalade with functioning LED running lamps that, as the automaker says, "appear embedded and breaking through a wall of ice."
But back to that ELR. This Saks edition plug-in hybrid coupe commands a surcharge of $14,500 over the $75,000 base model that over 85-percent of Autoblog readers polled already feel is overpriced. For that extra coin, you get an ELR wearing exclusive (to this car) White Diamond paint matched with either a jet black or light cashmere interior. Buyers will also receive an upgraded 240-volt charging station complete with professional installation, and the cars come with Cadillac's ELR Concierge service - representatives "trained in white-glove customer care" that serve as an additional point of contact beyond the dealership when it comes to topics like like battery care, charging, service scheduling and news updates.
