Here we have 2, yes count them, TWO 6-window 1960 Cadillac 4 Door Deville Pillarless Hard Tops.  BOTH of them have straight bodies and are survivors.  BOTH  of them are solid restoration candidates.  BOTH of them have solid chrome trim with no missing pieces.  I am on the fence between building one REALLY good one out of them and parting the rest, or letting someone else have this project.  Why?? - because it will take me forever - I just don't have enough time to work on these right now, and my money is tied up.  Otherwise I would just hold onto them.

The white one is a Coupe DeVille with all the high class options.  It runs well (no smoke or wierd noises, tranny shifts perfect...) it drives - see below.  The grey one is a Coupe Calais (which is just a DeVille with less interior trim and crank windows) ...or at least that is how I think the models worked.  Grey one is a one-owner car.  Not that it matters much at this point.

Here are the details on the white one.  It has its original 390 V-8 (56,000 actual miles), Automatic Trans, Power Steering, Power Brakes (master brake cylinder not building pressure so brakes are not working), Power Windows and Power Seats. It basically was an all original car that the prior owner was driving on special occasions until he parked it 12 years ago. It needed some body work down low so he had that repaired and a paint job done back then. The overall outside of the body is decent. Some old repair on the bottom of front fenders and lower rear quarters showing. The bondo didn't like the storage and so it needs significant prep to get a good paint job on it.  Drivers side inner rocker is rusted out and one of the floor braces between the 2 doors on the drivers side are rusted out. I cleaned out the original matting in the trunk. The floor is intact but is getting thin.

Roof has a small dent on drivers side. The hood on the car is rusty and is junk.  Engine was hooked up to a boat tank (just in case the car's tank had dirt), cleaned the points and the car fired right up. Power steering works beautiful. Transmission goes in all the gears. Brakes will work once the master cylinder is replaced.  It is not building pressure. If this is a concern for shipping we can get a new master cylinder and get the brakes working at an additional cost. The interior in the car is all intact and in good shape - see pictures. Two cracks in the dash pad, head liner is good and the carpets need to be thrown out.  I tried the lights, windows and seat etc and everything worked. The radio is out of the dash and in the trunk (not sure why - but I was going to get a modern replacement) and front parking light housing trims. They are in nice shape. Five good wide white wall tires. Would be a great project 60's era car to fix up or an excellent car to part out.

Here are the details on the grey one.  It has its original 390 V-8 (non-operable), Automatic Trans, Power Steering, Power Brakes.  This car has been stored for 20-25 years now.  The engine was stuck when the car was stored and has been pickled for at least 20 years now.  It is a rebuild candidate, so a good core.  The body on this one is completely unmolested.  The rockers and lower doors show rust holes, but are easily patched since it is original paint and no bondo.  The interior is out of the car and in good shape.  The floors are rusted out and need new pans.  Frame is solid.  Bumpers are dented and have some rust outs.

For me the plan is simple: Strip and patch the body and frame of the grey car.  Take the engine, bumpers and interior from the white one, put them in the grey one and paint it.  In the end, you'll have a nice 30k restored Cadillac Coupe DeVille.  Not only that, but you will make back the money spent on this auction just selling off the extra parts from this project here on eBay!

Liberace's gilded Cadillac could be yours

Tue, 27 Aug 2013

With their chrome grilles and oversized wheels, it's hard not to notice a Cadillac these days. But this one is even more blingtastic on account of the 23.75-karat gold-leaf bodywork.
The 1931 Cadillac Golfer's Drop Head Coupé is said to have belonged to the inimitable performer Liberace, who didn't just have it covered in gold - he also had the exterior door handles plated in silver and the inside handles in 24-karat gold as well. It's also got a white leather interior and headlights that - well ahead of their time (if you'll pardon us, Mr. Tucker) - pivot with the steering wheel. All that bling is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission that pales in comparison to the seven, eight and even nine-speed gearboxes appearing on luxury sedans today.
The project was undertaken over the course of three years in the 1970s by one Jack Smith from Kansas. Smith (if that was his real name) sold it at auction in 1975, and it was most recently displayed for 12 years at a museum in Germany which claimed it was Liberace's own. The car is now going up for sale by Barons' at the Sandown Park horse racing track in Surrey, England, on September 17, when bidding starts at 85,000 pounds - equivalent to over $130,000 at today's rates.

GM recalling another 2.7 million vehicles in five separate campaigns

Thu, 15 May 2014

The recalls keep rolling in from General Motors, evidently keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of the ignition-switch debacle and clean house. This time they're all coming at once, with five separate recalls announced together covering approximately 2.7 million vehicles.
The largest of the five actions involves over 2.4 million units of the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura in order to fix brake light wiring harness, which have been found to be susceptible to corrosion. The recall is separate from the 56k Aura sedans which GM recently recalled over faulty shift cables, not to mention the previous massive recall of 1.3 million vehicles - some of them the same models - but appears to have resulted from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation that started with the G6 almost a year ago.
The second-largest campaign involves the 2014 Chevy Malibu, specifically those fitted with GM's 2.5-liter engine and stop/start system, approximately 140,000 examples of which has been found to have problematic brakes. The issue does not appear to be connected to the recall of 8k Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans (also involving brake woes) which we reported upon last week. Four crashes have been reported in such models, but GM admits it's not yet clear if the problem was a contributing factor in the accidents.
