1972 Buick Skylark GranSport Stage 1 "Big Block" 455 Convertible Spring is finally here and the time is right for that Red Muscle Car Convertible that you've always wanted!! This is a very nice example of a the last year the Buick designers decided to stop production of the GM A-body convertible. 1972 was nearing the end of the muscle car era, so these opportunities don't come around very often. This car was purchased from a gentleman in the Western suburbs of the Chicagoland area this past fall. I saw no signs of this car ever being involved in an accident. He did have an older restoration on the car with some patchwork on the floors, but it all appears to have been done correctly, and the floors are solid with newer carpet, and brand new floor mats. The entire trunk pan was replaced with a brand new full one piece trunk pan, and a brand new gas tank including new straps. The frame is also in nice condition. Those are the main items that are always nice to have in a muscle car that has been around for over four decades. I was told that the mileage is original, but I have no way to verify that statement to say that it is factual. The mileage is exempt on all of the older classic cars, so no odometer statement appears on the title. He did say that he only used the car during the summer months to avoid salt damage, but this car can be used as a daily driver. I only saw one repaint on this car in its 41 year existence. It was still very shiny, but some of the clear coat was starting to peel. The body was prepped and primed with two coats of Dupont red oxide primer, and three coats of Ferrari red followed by three coats of clear coat to insure this paint work will last for many years to come. The body on this car is virtually laser straight. This is a drivers quality paint job that some people might consider to be show quality, but I personally do not. It really does appear very nice and shiny, and I feel confident saying that the new owner will get many compliments wherever they decide to drive it. To the best of my knowledge this car started life as a Skylark Custom convertible, but it has a genuine General Motors steel framed GranSport hood with the cool Buick emblem on the front of the ram-air hood. That must have been an option that was ordered, because it looks to be correct for the hood. I have never seen that option on one of these hoods prior to this one. This prior owner said the "Big Block Buick 455" is not original to the car, but it does fire up everytime, and runs great. I just spoke with him thoroughly just before describing this listing to find out exactly what he knew about the car from the owner prior to him. He stated that he was a very knowledgeable Buick GranSport finatic, and that this engine most likely came out of a 71 GranSport, and the engine was completely re-built to Stage 1 specifications. He had no reason to doubt him, because he had 3 or 4 other GS models. This Buick was ordered with many factory options. It has power steering, power front disc brakes, power windows, power top, and tilt wheel. It was factory ordered with air conditioning, and all the componets seem to be in place. The compressor looks almost new, and spins freely, but is missing the belt, so making the A/C operable will be left up to the next owner. This vehicle is equipped with Climate Control. This 1972 also has dual sport mirrors, and was ordered with the extra bumper guards to keep the bumpers in nice shape. In my opinion, all of the chrome is in good drivers quality condition or better. The decals on the rocker trim still glow nicely when the light hits them just right. These rocker moldings are proper for the 1972 GranSport models, and are still in nice condition. They really enhance the bright red paintwork. This car is for the guy or girl who had one in high school and would like to revisit the past, or for someone who would simply like to drive around with the top down while enjoying their investment grow. It's a wonderful car to take to the local drive-in movie theater or cruise night. Doesn't every guy or girl deserve to have an old school classic muscle car to polish, and tinker around with in their garage at night?? These cars were built to allow the average person to be able to work on them without having to bring them into an expensive shop to pay those high prices for repairs. There are a wide variety of muscle and classic car part suppliers out there today, and they stock nearly every part you could ever imagine for these 40 plus year old beauties. Local swap meets are also a fun hobby to acquire parts where nearly any part can be found inexpensively. Spring is going to officially start during the course of this auction, and this drop top is ready for a full season of top down cruising. The white convertible top is in very good condition. It appears as a newer top with new padding on the inside, and a newer well liner behind the rear seat. It does have the nice glass back window, not plastic. The dual exhaust is relatively new, and provides an awesome rumble to that Big Block 455. New chrome exhaust tips were just added to enhance that muscle car appearance. Every time this Big Block is fired up it's like an adrenaline rush. It's very hard to walk away from this car when you park it somewhere without turning around to give yourself another look. The 455 Big Block has been detailed, and both the power steering, alternator, and fan belts have been changed. Under the hood there is a new master cylinder, and alternator, with a newer four core aluminum radiator for maximum cooling. This red beauty starts right up every time, and drives down the road wonderfully, and shifts smoothly. There is a new set of AC Delco spark plugs, distributor cap, and the rotor were also recently replaced. I'm more of a 442 guy, but if anyone would like me to check any numbers, I would be more than happy to. The correct functional ram-air cleaner for the 1972 GranSport model has the new square foam seal on the passenger side, and the new triangle foam seal on the drivers side that sits on top of the quadrajet 4 barrel carberator. This Buick has a very nice set of almost new raised white lettered P235/60R14" Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires mounted on a full set of four nicely detailed Buick sport wheels with all four matching center caps. Inside the nicely detailed brand new trunk pan was coated with AC Delco black and aqua spatter spray to resemble the way it was done from the factory. On top of the brand new trunk mat is a 5th Buick chrome sport wheel with a nice Cooper Cobra Radial GT sitting on a new trunk mat. The trunk also has a detailed jack and crow bar, so if there is ever a mishap on the road you can be back cruising looking complete in minutes. This bold muscle car is steered with the Buick deluxe three spoke sport steering wheel that tilts to the desired position of the driver. The horn will work, but is missing the contact under the horn button. The headlights, all four tail lights, brake lights, all four cornering lights, turn signals, and even the license plate lights all work as they should. The clock and lighter do not work. I saw no cracking in the dash pad anywhere. The bucket seats, and the balance of the interior shows very well with barely any noticeable imperfections, as shown in the pictures. The inside door panels are brand new from PUI interiors correct for 1972. All four power windows do work, as verified by the top down pictures with all four windows down. There are no cracks or chips anywhere in the windshield. The wood grain around the dash bezel, and the lenses are still in good condition. The air conditioning has the climate control option, and the stereo is an AM/FM Cassette player with Jensen triaxial speakers for that old school sound. The wipers were just replaced with brand new wiper blades. The console is still in very good condition with the infamous horseshoe shifter, and a new shifter cable. There is a 10-bolt rear end, but I am unsure of the gear ratio. Everywhere this car is driven people are attracted to it like a magnet. You must be prepared to be the spectacle of the neighborhood. The last year GM A-body convertibles are getting harder and harder to come across. I tried to replace all of the factory decals that were missing to make this drop top appear as it would have looked the day it rolled out of the factory onto the showroom floor back in 1972 as a Buick GranSport Stage 1 convertible. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide that anyone can look up easily online has the 1972 Buick GranSport Stage 1 455 convertible valued at $58,205 in high condition, $31,285 in average condition, and $18,445 in the lowest condition. No one has to know that it is not authentic except the new owner, and me. I'm not telling anyone! Nada has the 1972 Buick Skylark Custom convertible listed at $24,280 in the highest condition, $15,587 in average condition, and $9,273 in the lowest possible condition. I believe this red beauty with a big block 455, and the majority of the Stage 1 options added to this convertible places this Buick in much better than the simple average condition of the Nada book values. Especially with the power window, tilt wheel, and a/c options. Take advantage of this chance to finally own your dream car right as spring is arriving. I'm not trying to insinuate that this car is anything near the status of a Barrett-Jackson museum piece by any stretch of the imagination, but I do believe it is an investment that will continue to rise in value. These types of cars have been shown to consistently climb in value with almost every quarter in the re-evaluation of the latest current values. Why pay those inflated prices when you can own the same looking car at a reasonable price that you can actually drive, and enjoy the muscle car hobby. This is a prime opportunity to own a piece of muscle car history at a fraction of those prices. A great deal of time, money, and intricate detailing effort went into making the car you see listed in this description. What you see is exactly what you get! Plain and simple! This car is over 40 years old, and I tried to pay attention to all the little details that are typically missing. I also tried to list all of the pertinent information, so any potential bidders can make the most informed decision before placing their bid. If there is anything else you feel I may have missed, please ask as many questions as you like. I take pride in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. This is a quick 5-day "No Reserve" auction that will sell to the highest bidder on Sunday evening. Thank you for taking the time to view my auction! Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!

GM recalls nearly 24,000 Buick Regals for brake issue
Mon, Jul 18 2022Buick is recalling 2018-2020 model year Regals to address a software defect in the braking system that would result in a loss of power assist under certain circumstances, making the brakes difficult to operate and potentially leading to a crash. In total, 23,734 models are covered by the campaign. "In the event of a partial or full loss of vacuum-brake assist, the vehicle’s hydraulic-brake boost is designed to supply supplemental pressure to the vehicleÂ’s brake system. A software error in the electronic brake control module (EBCM) may fail to activate the hydraulic-brake boost under these conditions," GM said in its defect report to NHTSA. "If the vehicleÂ’s vacuum-power brake assist partially or fully fails, braking events may require additional stopping distance, depending on the brake pedal force applied by the driver. Increased stopping distances could increase the risk of a crash." GM says that a warning indicator will illuminate in the dash if the system completely fails, and drivers may notice an increase in brake pedal resistance. Failure will not render the brakes inoperable, but they will require more force to operate. GM has begun notifying dealers of the defect; owners should be notified starting in August.  Related video: Recalls Buick GM Safety Hatchback Wagon Sedan
GM program sees dealers taking on way more loaner cars
Wed, Dec 17 2014Given the volume of vehicles we're talking about, this is a significant development for GM's bottom line. Bring your car into the dealership for service, and you may need a loaner car in exchange. And with so many recalls being carried out, that means a lot of loaners – especially at General Motors dealerships. That could be one of the reasons why GM is massively expanding its loaner fleet program. While many Chevrolet and Buick-GMC dealerships have an on-site rental car location operated by a third party like Enterprise (which may or may not provide a GM vehicle), others manage their own loaner fleets. But while the range of dealerships operating such fleets was once small, reports Automotive News, the number has been growing rapidly: from the locations responsible for only 20 percent of those brands' sales two years ago to about 90 percent today. The impetus for that growth comes down to a massive expansion of GM's Courtesy Transportation Program. The initiative encourages dealers to ramp up their loaner fleet to a maximum size determined by GM, with a mix determined by the dealer itself, so that a showroom in Texas can be bolstered with a fleet of pickup trucks and a dealer in California can employ more Volt and Camaro Convertible loaners. The dealership gets a $500 credit for each vehicle its puts in its fleet, and can use those vehicles as loaners for service customers, as multi-day test drivers or to rent out separately. The vehicles remain in the dealer's fleet for 90 days or 7,500 miles, then they can be sold as used, but with new-car incentives. The dealer gets a fleet of loaners, customers get to use the loaners, try out a new car overnight or buy a barely used car with attractive incentives, and GM gets to clock more sales. But therein lies the kicker: the automaker counts the dispatch of the loaner new vehicle to the dealership as a new-car sale, which could end up distorting its sales figures. Counting loaner vehicles as sold vehicles is something of an industry-standard practice, but given the volume of vehicles we're talking about, this is a significant development for GM's bottom line. One dealership - Paddock Chevrolet in Kenmore, NY, for example - had no loaner fleet two years ago, but now runs a fleet of 50 vehicles. Multiply that by the 4,000 or so dealers GM has across America and you're talking about the potential for hundreds of thousands of these sorts of sales.
GM may kill 6 car models as it works with UAW to tackle sales slump
Fri, Jul 21 2017The president of the United Auto Workers union said on Thursday the union is talking with General Motors about the potential threat to plants and jobs from slumping U.S. car sales. GM's response will be more trucks and SUVs, and sources say at least six slow-selling car models may be killed off. "We are talking to (GM) right now about the products that they currently have" at underused car plants such as Hamtramck in Michigan and Lordstown in Ohio, and whether they might be replaced with newer, more popular vehicles such as crossovers, Dennis Williams told reporters. "We are tracking it (and) we are addressing it," Williams added. GM has cut shifts at several U.S. plants this year as inventories of unsold cars have ballooned. Industry analysts said more jobs could be at risk as the automaker wrestles with permanently shrinking production of small and midsized sedans. GM is reviewing whether to cancel at least six passenger cars in the U.S. market after 2020, including the Chevrolet Volt hybrid, which could be replaced in 2022 with a new gasoline-electric crossover model, Reuters has learned from people familiar with the plans. Other GM cars at risk include the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Impala and Chevrolet Sonic, sources said. Some analysts have singled out GM's Hamtramck plant in Detroit as one of the most vulnerable because of plummeting car sales. The plant, which opened in 1985, builds four slow-selling models: Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Cadillac CT6 and Chevrolet Volt. In the first half, it built fewer than 35,000 cars, down 32 percent from the same period in 2016, according to suppliers familiar with GM's U.S. production schedule. The typical GM assembly plant builds 200,000-300,000 vehicles a year.COMING ATTRACTIONS: TRUCKS AND SUVS GM must "create some innovative new products" to replace slow-selling sedans "or start closing plants," said Sam Fiorani, vice president of AutoForecast Solutions. The auto maker already has begun to shift future production plans from cars to trucks, according to Morgan Stanley auto analyst John Murphy. He estimates that fewer than 10 percent of the new vehicle models that GM will introduce over the next four years will be passenger cars, with the rest divided among trucks, SUVs and crossovers. GM plans to add production of the new Cadillac XT4 crossover next year to its Malibu sedan plant in Fairfax, Kansas.
