This beautiful Buick GS (Gran Sport) 350 lived 90% of its life on the west coast between California & Arizona.  Then I purchased the car in 2010 (while living in Sunny Atlanta, GA).  Just recently I moved to MA and due to space, I am thinning out some of my private collection.  This GS is not going to set any record times down at the track, but it looks fast & mean and it turns a TON of heads, so if you like getting waves, and thumbs up, and "hell yeah's" than this is the car for you to take to your next cruise night.  I have owned vintage cars all of my life and can honestly say that this Buick has a special place in people's hearts....and I honestly don't know what it is, I just know its different than the others...its the whole Buick thing I guess.

Features or recent updates:

  • This 1972 GS comes set up with a 1970 style bumper and grille - why?  In my opinion, the 1970 look was cleaner and meaner - and it was worth the $1000 I spent to make this Buick look clean & mean - thats it, no other reason
  • Brand new (completely restored) Appliance Wheels from Detroit Vintage Wheels - on average Scott at DV sells his wheels for between $1600-1800 per set, and these wheels and tires have less than 1000 miles on them
  • This past winter (2013/2014) I repainted the car - I bought the car green but the car was orignally brown which I bet looks good, but I was on a budget so taking it back original was not an option
  • Finding hood grates for this car wasn't easy and they are not cheap - but I found them and these are like new - I also have a spare in the trunk
  • New Rug - slightly lighter than the paint but looks good with the tan bench seat - if I were keeping the car I would continue on with the new green seat covers & dask pad etc, but I have run out of space
  • New Vinyl Roof:  Right before I left Atlanta in 2012, this was replaced and its in great shape, like the day I got it back
  • Original motor rebuilt:  Its just a little 350 from 1972 so its not fast (maybe a couple hundred horse) but FUN to drive and very fuel effecient for an old car - I am glad I kept it original as possible and the motor hums and I am not turning wrenchs or dropping it at the shop - I am driving it consistently when the weather is nice
  • The engine rebuild cost me around 4K, but it was done by an old Buick guy in Atlanta and I will list out the specs below - the original block was shot, so its on a 72 Block but not the original
  • New Air Conditioner from Vintage Air - these units are at least $1000+ but if your living down south, its worth every penny - this thing blows cold air better than my 2010 Caddy
  • Flowmaster Exhuast came with car and I am not going to twist any words - its loud
  • Rust:  Most of these cars are rusted out or long gone - I am not a body guy so I dont know the terms, but this car is basically rust free - I am sure it has a couple of spots here or there if you look hard enough and the paint job did not cost be 12K (more like 4K) but I have taken as many pictures as possible and tried to detail where I see a bubble or a bur in the paint and its minimal at best - this car looks and runs great / bottom line

Other Notes:

  • The car has no radio - I am a coach and only take this to the ball park, usually with my daughters - And we talk the whole ride, so I never got around to it - and if your like me and like purring exhaust systems, thats my radio (on short rides) - Obviously I would have done the radio if I was keeping it, but I am not so its yours to design and do right - its literally a blank slate - your starting from scratch
  • I have the original wheels - so if you want to negotiate the price without the wheels, we can talk
  • The master cylinder was just replaced - car brakes nicely
  • The rear springs are heavy duty GS Sport Wagon springs and are less than 2 years old - they give the car a meaner stance and a firmer ride which I like, but you may want to change & for short money
  • The hood is my own spin on a GSX hood but its not even close to an exact replica - its just a cool stinger on a mat black hood with a new hood tach - thats it
  • The hood tach is brand new but I have not connected it yet - I just got it, I'm not mechanical and as you can see by the trunk photos, the wire to finish the job is in the trunk - so hopefully next wk if the weather is nice
  • This car doesn't see bad weather - I drive it a lot locally (5-10 miles a day) but not until the weather is nice
  • The shocks were replaced the same time that I did the springs - so the car has fresh springs and shocks and the stance is nice and always getting compliments - once again, probably not an exact match of how GS's are supposed to sit or stand, but its my spin and its well received amongst CAR guys - maybe not hard core old school GS guys - but car guys in general love the ride
  • The steering column needs to be replaced - dont get me wrong, it drives fine, but its a loose wheel and it could easily be tightened or replaced for under $200 and it would make the ride much tighter and less like a City Bus
  • The horn button isn't cracked like it looks in the picture - its honestly weather permitting - I have seen the Buick logo clear as day and then cracked to hell - its very strange and depends on the weather is best I can describle it but the horn works!
  • The cars odometer reads 66,000 milles - I hooked up with the original owner through linked-in, its definitely not 66K original, more like 166,000 - which still, isnt that bad and the body shows

As GM readies Alexa convenience for vehicles, we ponder its dark side

Thu, Dec 19 2019

SEATTLE — On the 30th floor of AmazonÂ’s glass tower, in a room with a breathtaking view of downtown Seattle, thereÂ’s a beautiful bed that nobody sleeps in. ItÂ’s near a kitchen nobody cooks in, a living room couch that no one crashes on, a kitchen table that doesnÂ’t host any family meetings. ItÂ’s AmazonÂ’s Smart Home Lab, a place where every Alexa-enabled gizmo the company or its partners can produce is crammed into the same space, ostensibly for Amazon to test. The company invited us there to show us the companyÂ’s vision for consumer products to leverage AlexaÂ’s voice interaction software before taking us down to a demo of its latest implementation in a Buick Encore GX. In this eerie simulacrum of a fantastic luxury apartment, however, nothing went right the first time. ItÂ’s a challenging environment for Alexa to work correctly, our hosts noted, pointing to the fact that there were six wifi networks available for the devices to connect to. In a normal home, one wifi network controls all the devices, who can theoretically sort out for themselves which one youÂ’re actually trying to activate. In the Smart Home Lab, any unmuted Alexa device thinks itÂ’s in charge. Even so, the connected toaster wouldnÂ’t connect. The Fire TV Cube wouldnÂ’t play a song. Our handlers futzed with everything, muting and unmuting devices, repeating commands, making us feel better about our own struggles with similar technologies. If it doesnÂ’t work right at Amazon HQ, maybe itÂ’s not just us! ItÂ’s telling that down on the faux lawn, in between the gleaming Amazon spheres that host a billionaireÂ’s tropical garden and the Day 1 building that the Smart Home Lab resides in, the BuickÂ’s Alexa implementation doesnÂ’t use a “wake-word” at all. The familiar Push to Talk button on the steering wheel, which normally activates General MotorÂ’s own proprietary voice command system, can be set to default to Alexa when that rolls out to GM vehicles in the first half of 2020 via an over-the-air (OTA) update. Given the reluctance of Alexa to respond to its wake-word in the comfort of AmazonÂ’s own lab, we hoped that this was by design. Drivers are already familiar with Push to Talk, and a physical button is more reliable than the vagaries of contemporary voice recognition – not to mention the privacy and accuracy issues involved with always-on mics. Our experience with the not-ready-for-primetime Mercedes-Benz MBUX system is illustrative.

2018 Buick Enclave spied looking slim in Death Valley

Thu, Sep 8 2016

The nine-year-old Buick Enclave is well past its prime, but this set of spy photos reveals that GM won't put the vehicle out of its misery, but will give the vehicle a large update instead. Our photographers managed to catch Buick testing a heavily-camouflaged 2018 Enclave testing below sea level near Death Valley. Buick was testing the prototype in Nevada earlier this year, but slapped a trailer onto the back of the SUV. Thanks to the camouflage that covers the badging, headlights, taillights, and hood, there's no way to confirm if the prototype is really a Buick or something from Chevrolet. But the circular outline on the grille has us leaning towards it being a Buick. Five LED running lights shine through the heavy camouflage, while Buick's iconic waterfall grille is prominently uncovered. The Enclave, which came out in 2008, shares the same platform as the GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse. With the new Acadia slimming down and ditching the old Lambda platform in favor of the Chi platform, the Enclave will surely follow suit. The Enclave, though, is expected to get a stretched version of the Chi platform with three rows. While the entire body is concealed, the prototype's side profile looks to be slimmer than the current Enclave. With the addition of the new, lighter platform, the Enclave is expected to get GM's new 3.6-liter V6 with a nine-speed automatic transmission added later down the road. The new Enclave is expected to make its debut early next year as a 2018 model, which will be followed by the reveal of the Traverse shortly after.
