Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon!

1994 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon.  5000 Miles, as new in every manner down to belts, tires, hoses.  Put away new as a museum collector and possibly the finest Roadmaster Estate Wagon on earth.  Beyond being the last of the RWD full size/full frame GM Cars, the final year 94-96 Roadmaster Wagons came equipped with the famed LT1 Engine.  Yes, you can call this a "muscle" wagon as it is.  The Impala SS/Cadillac Brougham/Roadmaster left a lasting impression on the American Car Culture being the final full size cars, and with the addition of the LT1 engine, they are still talked about today.  The good ones have earned their way into the collector realm.  Not many people saved these cars though, as they did drive so good and were very reliable, they got used up.  With a total wagon production of about 20,000 from 94-96, not many of these exist in good condition today.   The similar platform Impala SS, many were saved.  Not so much for the lower production and more costly Roadmaster Wagon.   The "skywagon" (glass roof wagons) were a bit of Americana going back for years ending with these cars.   Many of us took family trips in the back of similar cars from the 60s and 70s.  Sitting in that 3rd seat looking backwards as a kid was something pretty neat to behold.  Although these cars were big for their day, they are not big enough today to combat modern SUV collisions.... so that is what took their place... Heavier, bigger and less efficient vehicles....  yep, totally backwards but re-marketed from "station wagon" to SUV to make it all "ok" for you to justify.  Although there were many neat Skywagon GM cars, I would say the LT1 wagons of 94-96 would be the one Clark Griswold and his family wish they had vs that family truckster ford.   I think Clark could have achieved a much longer jump in one of these!

This Example goes a step beyond in collectability as it is a RPO V92 Gran Touring/Trailer Towing Package car.  With this option, a ton of hidden hardware was added giving the car things not all had.  This package gave you the F40 HD Suspension with the auto leveling, the HD Cooling with the large belt driven engine fan (notice most do not have this), Aux Engine Oil Cooler, Aux Transmission Cooler, Posi Trac Rear end, Higher capacity radiator, Higher Output Alternator, larger rear brakes.   This option was said to be able to tow 7000 Lbs.  But what it does without towing is make the car drive like a dream.  There is nothing "boaty" about a car optioned like this.  It handles like a dream and simply is powerful.    Only way to have one.  The rare 96 Brougham I have also has this option.  Even harder to find in those.

This car is also loaded with the Prestige Package, Leather, Full size Matching Alloy Spare, Remote Entry, Rare "Sungate" auto tinting front Windshield, 3rd Seat, Heated Remote Mirrors, Auto Door Locks and more.   All that is neat but again means nothing unless its combined with being perfect, brand new and in museum condition.

Third 1987 Buick Regal GNX will be auctioned in January

Mon, Nov 13 2017

A member of the 1987 Buick press fleet is hitting the auction block next year and it's a rarified gem: a low-mileage Regal Grand National GNX, serial No. 003 and one of just 547 models built for that year, and the last of the traditional body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive Grand Nationals. It'll be auctioned at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January. The GNX No. 003 was loaned out to publications including Autoweek, Motor Trend and Road & Track, where it racked up around 8,200 miles. "Through it all, a constant sad undertone was the understanding that 1987 was to be the final appearance of the traditional body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive G-body (which also underpinned the best-selling Chevy Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Prix and Olds Cutlass)," reads a the description published on Barrett-Jackson's website. "A totally redesigned W-body Somerset Regal, with front-wheel drive and unitized body construction, was slated to replace the popular midsize Buick in 1988." So Buick opted to make "a Grand National to end all Grand Nationals" with the '87 GNX, partnering with ASC/McLaren to equip them with wheel lip flares, fender vents, 16-by-8-inch BBS rims and more aggressive tires. It left untouched the Grand National's standard Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection 3.8-liter V6 but added a larger Garrett T-3 turbocharger with a ceramic impeller, a larger intercooler, more aggressive fuel, spark and waste gate tables, and a dual exhaust system that boosted output from 235 horsepower and 330 foot-pounds of torque to 276 hp and 360 lb-ft. That was enough, Barrett-Jackson reports, to make the performance coupe quicker and faster in quarter-mile tests than the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 930 Turbo. After making the test-drive rounds in the automotive media, the car sold in 1988 as a brass hat/company official car to Fischer Buick in Troy, Mich. with approximately 8,200 miles on it. From there, it quickly sold to a local resident who drove it very little, and sold it in the spring of 1989. Since 1992, it has reportedly been kept in climate-controlled storage, totally original, unmodified and undamaged, with just 10,790 miles on the odometer today. It recently underwent a complete mechanical service and cosmetic reconditioning. You can check out the listing on Barrett-Jackson here. The first '87 GNX ever produced resides in the General Motors Heritage Collection and No. 002 is at the Sloan Museum in Flint, Mich. Interestingly, another '87 GNX, No.

Buick dusting off Grand National, GNX and T-Type nameplates

Mon, 26 Nov 2012

Inside Line reports Buick is planning to bring back some of the more storied names from the company's past, including the Grand National, GNX and the T-Type. Those cars rose to prominence in the 1970s and '80s to become performance legends of their day.
The new models will reportedly make use of the rear-wheel drive platform that currently underpins the Cadillac ATS and all would arrive as sedans - according to an unnamed source familiar with the initiative. Odds are the T-Type and the Grand National would share a driveline, with honest money being on a new twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 as the engine of choice. Word has it the mill will be good for anywhere from 350 to 400 horsepower.
That leaves only the GNX. Inside Line seems to think that machine could get down the road with some help from the all-new GM LT1 small-block V8. The engineers behind the ATS platform have already told us the engine bay is large enough for to accommodate the big eight pot, and since GM is most certainly working on an ATS-V, a slightly less powerful, less luxurious Buick iteration makes some kind of sense. We can't wait to see these things in the light of day.

Chevy Bolt-based prototype may be a Buick EV for China

Thu, Jan 9 2020

Late last spring, we got a look at a GM prototype that was clearly based on the Chevy Bolt EV, but with updated styling. It seemed like it could be a more crossover-styled Bolt, given the recently trademarked name of EUV. Now we get another look at the prototype, but the bodywork seems less suggestive of a Chevy, and more of a Buick. This vehicle definitely still appears to be based on the Bolt, rather than on another small GM platform. In the photos of it next to the current model, the size, wheelbase and profile are extremely similar. There are differences, though. The nose isn't as sloped or as rounded, and the rear window kicks up a little earlier. The biggest changes are in the front and rear fascias, and it's here that we see hints of Buick. There are prominent air inlets on each side of the front bumper that give the car a more aggressive look. The headlights still have a fairly rounded, organic look, but with little extensions like fangs underneath. The styled running-light section, rounded shape and the smoked lenses seem very Buick-like. The grille features a large badge that doesn't fit the shape of a bow-tie, and is more that of a round logo like Buick's. Around at the back, the full-width taillights stand out, and in the middle there is obviously a round badge, again like a Buick. The wide taillights would also be a natural evolution of Buick's current light design language that uses somewhat wide and thin lights. The rear bumper has been redesigned with new lower taillights. Now that we've established that this seems very much like a Buick, we don't think we'll see this particular version offered here with the badge. This is more likely a Buick version of the Bolt for the Chinese market, where the brand is associated with luxury and has been the spearhead for GM's electric and hybrid models. In fact, the Chevy Volt hybrid was sold there as the Buick Velite 5, which was part of a family of a electrified Velite models. This would probably also carry a Velite badge as well. While we might not see this specific Buick variant, we probably will see it offered as a Chevy in some form. With its more aggressive, crossover shape, it could be the rumored EUV model. Or it could be just a refresh of the current Bolt, since the model has been largely unchanged since its introduction for the 2017 model year. And extrapolating from this prototype, we can see how the headlights could be tweaked to tie into those air scoops as on the Suburban and Silverado.
