The early fifties were a time of wonder and excitement in America. The war was won; the GIs had returned home, were starting families and building businesses. Seemingly insatiable demand for all products – but especially automobiles created one of the country’s greatest periods of economic expansion. At the heart of it all was GM’s traveling Motorama, a no-holds-barred display of dazzling technology and stunning styling. A series of stunning styling exercises captivated the public – but most were not for sale.

Three very special cars were made available for purchase by a lucky few who could afford the startling price tags – and who had the influence needed to secure one. They were the Oldsmobile Fiesta, the Buick Skylark and the Cadillac Eldorado, and they are coveted so highly by collectors today that to own a full set has been called the “triple crown” of car collecting.

In 1953, Buick launched the beautiful new Skylark. The car was striking, with styling cues taken from XP-300 LeSabre concept, and a beautiful swooping beltline never before seen on a Buick. Mounted on a Roadmaster chassis, the Skylark offered exceptional performance, yet with the convertible top in place, the car was less than five feet tall. The sporty, yet luxurious Skylark is powered by a 322-cid, 188-hp V-8 engine with an automatic transmission. The distinctive chrome wire wheels and wide whitewall tires look incredible with its brightly-toned blue finish and complementary two-tone red and white interior. The low-profile hydraulically-operated canvas soft-top is white, as is the wheelwell paint detail.

It is reported that this car was restored in a high-end fashion in recent times and continues to demonstrate the type of presentation one expects of this type of fine automobile. Additional features include a radio, hydraulically-operated window lifts, power steering, damascene-type dash and door detail, exceptional bright trim details and model-specific badging for this special car.

All told, just 1,690 Skylarks were produced in 1953, making them among the rarest and most desirable of fifties GM convertibles.

GM warning 800,000 owners that their cars may need oil changes more frequently than they say

The days of changing your engine oil every 3,000 miles are long gone thanks to most cars having automatic oil monitoring systems, but about 800,000 General Motors vehicles apparently have incorrect monitoring software that is leading to premature engine component wear. According to Autoweek, certain 2010-2012 Buick LaCrosse, Regal, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain models equipped with 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines could be going too long in between oil changes resulting in a higher-than-normal number of warranty claims for the engine's balance chain. The balance chain links the balance shaft to the crankshaft, and a worn one can produce higher noise levels.
As a fix, GM dealers will be reprogramming the software for the monitors in an effort to reduce the interval between oil changes, which varies based on driving habits and conditions. Through February 2015, the software update will be done at no cost to vehicle owners, but since this is not a recall, after that point, it will be up to the discretion of dealers as to whether or not they will charge for the service. What isn't immediately clear is whether GM plans on giving assistance to out-of-warranty customers who are experiencing engine issues from the worn chain.

It seems that Europe is defining the future of General Motors more so than its home North American market. Having axed Saturn, Pontiac and Hummer, GM has done a fairly good job of repositioning its remaining four divisions, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC. Cadillac carries the luxury banner. Chevrolet is aimed at the masses with cars and trucks along with a nod to performance thanks to Camaro and Corvette. Buick bridges the premium gap between Chevy and Cadillac, while GMC offers a hardcore work/upscale proposition.

GM to idle car production at five factories as Americans continue CUV love affair

In case you needed another reminder that Americans have fallen out of love with sedans, General Motors today announced plans to idle five factories in January in a bid to cut its inventory to 70 days. Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly ( Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Volt and Impala) and Fairfax Assembly in Kansas ( Chevy Malibu) will stop production for three weeks. Lansing Grand River ( Cadillac ATS and CTS, and Chevy Camaro) is going down for two weeks, while Lordstown, OH ( Chevy Cruze) and Bowling Green, KY ( Chevy Corvette) will go idle for a week each, Automotive News reports. GM's shutdown reflects a broader problem with the company's supply – at 847,000 vehicles, the company's supply increased unsteadily from a low of 629,000 units in January of 2016. That's more than a 25 percent increase in the past year. Citing information from Autodata, The Detroit News reports that at the end of November, GM had a 168-day supply of LaCrosses, 177 days' worth of Camaro, 170 days of Corvette, 121 days for Cruze, 119 days for ATS, 132 days for CTS, and 110 days of CT6. Meanwhile, inventory of the company's more popular vehicles is actually below the professionally accepted 60- to 70-day supply, The News reports. The Trax, Colorado pickup, and GM's full-size SUVs are sitting below 50 days and experiencing year-over-year sales increases. GM needs a rethink of its inventory levels, which is something that's apparently coming. "We're going to be responsible in managing our inventory levels," GM spokesman Jim Cain told The News. Another unnamed spokesman told Automotive News the company's day-to-day supplies would "fluctuate before moderating at year-end." But at least one analyst thinks this won't be the last time Detroit needs to stop production to level things out. "Incentives are elevated, residuals are declining, and rates are rising," Brian Johnson, an analyst with Barclays, told The News. "And while GM in particular may benefit in the months ahead from new product launches, it's important to recognize that GM's inventory is elevated at the moment, and it wouldn't surprise us if they need to announce another production cut Â– which could pressure the stock."
